I love the Fletcher dynasty from Maine and I also found that a small twisting rotation work well with the design. All the rings I've made work in a similar way. Thanks again for another great review. I would love to see a shot for shot comparison of those three thumbring. Thank you again Armin for all you do!

Very practical, very simple release , very comfortable and fits perfect. ( No more twisting in between shots) . Thorough design with the need of an Archer in mind. Thank you Alibow. Maraming Salamat Armin.

WOW! Thanks for the review. Now I want to give a thumb ring another chance. I tried a couple of thumb rings and went back to using a 1 over 2 under cordovan tab. I will order a shallow groove black horn thumb ring like yours and give thumb rings another chance. Thanks again for the excellent review.

Hi Armin. You have the greatest archery channel, bar none. A couple things: I made my own thumb ring from California bay laurel. It works well, and it was a very instructive activity. The money I saved allowed me to get a 50% discount on a 56" Toparchery recurve. ;-) The only thing is that, depending how you turn the ring, it has subtle variations in the rim where the string slides off. This potentially has benefits and limitations. The limitation, I suppose, is that these subtle differences introduce variations in the release. On the other hand, it allows you to easily experience different rim effects just by rotating the ring. I've found I like one orientation of the ring better than others, so simply place the ring on that same way everytime. The other thing is I'm becoming disenchanted with thumb release because, even after many months, I get too many fliers. It detracts from my enjoyment of archery. I mostly shoot my horse bows Mediterranean now. Eezy peezy. ;-)

This is, indeed, a great ring. Just got mine from alibow, although in stainless steel rather than horn or bone. Such a difference from the taped thumb I was using before. I can barely feel the string leave my hand.

The twisting motion release I was just reading about on Peter Dekkers Manchu archery website and have been really curious about. It seems a superior way that will ensure its clean every time. It is apparently the way the Manchu did it and they were using those massive bows of insanely high draw weights. Interesting.

I don't know if that helps you, but with the help of my trainer I have acquired a similar technique as Armin explained it. My trainer and I have noticed that if you pull the string back until almost the max draw (until it almost goes no longer), the hand always starts to rotate from the same length, without having to consciously help rotating. Sorry for my english, i am stil trying to improve :)

I made my own deep hook and I was wondering why it would be so painful to use, even with just 40 pound bow. That ring was made from wood and eventually broke in half. I ordered this "painless shallow hook ring" some week ago and hope it will work as in this video.

Just made a similar one , cross between a manchu and a simple thumb ring , out of moose antler, seems good , can use a very shallow hook , and very clean release , but for sure when I get home tonite I will try the twist release , I think i accidentlt sent an arrow down range last nite because u may have done exactly that with out realizing, The string does not sit on the thumb ring but behind, seems indexing string to groove on a galloping horse might give issue

Newbie here. Been playing with running archery. Experimenting with thumb rings and a turkish bow. Keep finding thumb rings flop or rotate on me while I am trying to load quickly. Any tips or suggestions on what type of ring would be best? So far, just using a glove works best.. just a tad harder to feel the nocks.

Armin, is it effective if the thumb ring presses against a tucked in index finger, instead of the middle finger. Would seem to reduce string drag down the edge of an extended index finger. ???

Thanks. So very timely after I made my second thumbring I sort of came across that by accident. However because the ring was not a great fit (too hasty on the file) it kept slipping sideways and I started to feel my skin delaminate inside the thumb so had to go back to a glove plus tape till I make one just like that. What poundage was that bow and by whom, please?

Hi Armin. I have the Ali Bow Shallow Hook, and it appears that the string has to slide down the side of the index finger. Concern about deflection. Can you comment about this. The more torque or rotation, more index finger contact. Have you tried pressing the ring against the side of the index finger instead of middle finger?
@razbarry42

do you think that the shallow hook painless ring will work with a western style recurve 40# barebow with flemish twist string? I am not sure how the eastern and western string compare.

Is the thumb position pretty similar to the king of Ruis spur ring? I've modified mine with a micro velcro thumb strap so it doesn't slip around between shots & I'd be interested in something with a similar feel. How does the sizing compare to their painless rings?

Hi Armin Hirmer, thanks for the video. Great info. If you were a beginner with Asiatic bows, but skilled in archery, and wanted to hunt with an Asiatic bow, would you use thumb ring, or Mediterranean release? What is more accurate, consistent, and powerful? I'm skilled with Mediterranean already, but unfamiliar with Asiatic bows.

@@ArminHirmer When you say "clunky" - do you mean it is just a bulkier ring (it looks that way)? Or the not as smooth funcitoning on release? (it looks like the fuhao has a bit larger ledge than the this ring). Thank you for all you do!

I'm very new to thumb draw. I've tried two different styles of Vermil thumb rings and just can't seem to get a secure hook. I've shot very few arrows and my thumbnail was sore for days. And I have had a couple of accidental releases. Just not comfortable with the technique at all at this point. Everyone makes it look so easy, but I'm not finding it to be at all! It appears that the range of motion, and perhaps the length of my thumb is not allowing me to get a steep enough angle on the string such that when "locked on", the face of the ring is roughly 45, MAYBE 60 degrees to the string. Even with my 35# bow this puts a lot of pressure on my thumb as the string tries to slide off the ring with any amount of draw. Maybe the shallow hook design will work for me as it doesn't need such an acute angle of the thumb to hold securely. Or maybe I should just stick with fingers and forget the Asiatic bow... 😕

Update , twist release means your arrow is in target before you even realize, you need to remember that little twist , , if you have not been using this style , but boy when you relax and remember , the arrows get very parallel off shots due to poor release or crooked arrows seem to happen less often Yet again the Hammer ( Hirmer) hit the nail on the head , thank you
