This lesson literally changed my game. I’ve been playing for about a year and a half now and struggled hitting my irons consistent. I tend to chunk a lot of them too. What you said about comparing it to a baseball swing was the perfect analogy for it to click in my head on how to shallow the club. Went to the range today and flushed all of my irons for the first time ever. Thank bro I really appreciate the lesson!

Thanks for video Grant. Im 53 and my 7 iron average is 145 - 150. After watching this video I went to range and implemented your advice on hip turn and and shallowning my swing...I gained almost 20 yards. I was hitting 7 iron from 160 to 170. Just need to practice and get more consistency. Videos are awesome, keep it up.

I’ve been trying to shallow my swing thru 2 instructors and countless videos. I get it now. I played great golf this summer but my swing had flaws and was exposed regularly to prevent me from scoring my best. I hit rock bottom last week and lost my swing. I went to the range today and am back on track. I’m Subbing and liking all your vids. Fine work sir!!

It's time for me to give a shout-out to our guy, Grant. I've been working hard on my game over the past 15 months. Took some lessons from a pro for the first time in my 40+ years of dabbling with this game and learned some useful things. I spend a lot of time at the range and have some pretty good days at the range and some not so good ones, but overall I feel like I've been making progress. However, hitting fat, especially with my short irons, has been my nemesis and I haven't been able to completely shake it. After watching this video last night, I went to the range this afternoon with some additional thoughts on shallowing the club, in particular the position I'm in at the top and how I proceed into my downswing. And wow, I honestly can't remember having a better range session, especially with the irons. Only fatted a couple of them (and not that bad) and only a few thins (and those weren't that bad either). Just felt like I was in complete command of my irons and it felt awesome. Sometimes it's just one simple thing that ends up being the missing link and I think this one might be it for me. Thanks again, Grant, for what you're doing here. You've got a great gift for golf swing instruction!

Absolutely excellent Grant, you are thoughtful and articulate … a very good instructor. I am 61 and just getting back to playing this year after 7 years off. I use to shoot low seventies to mid eighties and could hit the 5 iron 200+and drive 300+. Coming back to the game I’ve lost a ton of distance. What you call shallow and steep we called swing plane. Your explanation here makes so much more sense. I like how you stressed that hip turn starting the the downward swing. I know this to be true but I’m having some timing issues with that, especially on the course where as at the range it is easier to find. I think I get steep and out of sequence on the course causing fast shots which is why 6 to 8 pars and a birdie or two is still equating to 88 and 89’s (I have had an 81 and 82). I hope all that rambling helps you understand what type of instruction would help me. Some ideas might be, hip rotation, taking good divots after the ball, and even some stretching exercises. Thanks again for all the videos you guys do. You and Garrett have incredible chemistry, awesome to watch.

I've been STRUGGLING to hit my irons clean and consistent the entire time I've been playing golf (going on 3 years of playing regularly). My last two times out I've broken a hundred and nearly broken 90. I usually land around 103-111. You hit my head on the nail at 3:57 - The first thing I noticed on the shallow example was how much body rotation he's getting, whereas Phil is getting that rotation in his wrists, requiring better timing. At my age the amount of leg, hip, & back rotation for the shallow swing is nearly impossible for more than 2-3 swings (then ima need a stretcher lol). These vids, along with Danny Maude have helped me find a balance which you get into after about 4:00. Thanks for the vid, kid! I'm really enjoying all the GM & GG content!!! Keep it coming! Edit: Second half of this video is gold! Grant doesn't say it, but letting the body lead from the top of the backswing adds power & distance, too - much the same way the "step" gives baseball hitter their power.

I have watched two videos of yours that have given me the proper direction to practice: wrist angle and club shallowing. I hit a 7 iron about 175, but I KNOW I'm coming over the top because my fairway ball mark points at least 20˚ right of the target (I'm a lefty) every single time, and the marks on the sole of my irons indicate contact is open by about that same degree (I'm not squaring the face...ever). I've lost my ability to create a draw as I've aged, and - other than the usual 55 yr old stiffness and shoulder injury - I've just figured out why: my lead wrist is ALL wrong, and I'm not shallowing. Now I know what to practice. Thanks a bunch, Grant: well done.

The way you described why phil’s swing is so hard to replicate really helped things click in my head. Wow Grant, thanks so much. This is something to really chew on. I know I have struggled with this a lot. One of my struggles has always been not going ahead of the ball with my head on the downswing. So I would have a tendency to do that or I would end up on my back foot instead of my front. This often happened because I was trying to keep my head behind the ball. How do you shallow out and still keep your head in the correct position yet maintain good balance?
