Brilliant, works much better than my previous method. It's quite surprising how little pressure you need to make the edge. I used the round chrome stem of a screwdriver. I also found that 1000 grit seemed to work fine as the finish. Thanks for posting. BTW the oil is essential as otherwise the metal edge tends to rip.

Good video. I like the use of the marker to ensure it’s bee touched uniformly. Have done that with cleaning up table saw sled runners too. It’s like using xylem blue in machining metal

I love my scrapers. They leave the wood looking bright and feeling very smooth. Whereas heavy to medium grit sandpaper leaves it looking dull sand feeling fuzzy. It took some time for me to learn the proper way to sharpen one. Not everyone does it the same. And some books show the scraper being burnished at a 90 degrees. It puts a burr on both sides.

You might say somethingabout what sort of file you used and that scrapers need to work with grain in the same way planes do.

Stupid question, but I assume when orienting the scraper you are cutting opposite the angle you create with the Burr?

Why do you not push the burr out on both sides so that you have two edges on each sharpening session or did I miss something or would this not work?

If you want a truly simple method of sharpening the scraper, just use it after you file it. After all, the filing process raises a burr. That's why you're stoning the faces after filing: to remove the filing burr. The filing burr is actually sharp enough to raise shavings. If you don't believe me, try it, it works just fine. The only time I use a burnisher is to sharpen a scraping plane iron.

Thanks for watching! 🙂 I have used the scraper after filing and it works just fine. I use the stones as it helps get a cleaner cut. Right off the file it cuts but tends to leave long lines in the wood. At least that has been my experience. They usually show up when finishing. Using the stones helps get finer "teeth" and leaves a cleaner finish. I find it lasts longer before it needs to be sharpened again too (just my experience). It really depends what you are using the scraper for as to how much effort you want to put into honing it👍

One thing is for sure. Sandpaper dulls the wood whereas a card scraper keeps the wood looking natural.

Will the sharpened scraper remove an existing finish?
@zumkellerwoodshop4224
@zumkellerwoodshop4224 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I have done this many times. It will quickly remove the finish where a sanding disk would get gummed up. This is where it pays for itself in my opinion.

Why don't these come already sharpened??
@zumkellerwoodshop4224
@zumkellerwoodshop4224 3 жыл бұрын
The burr can be fine tuned for the type of work you are doing. Typically they come with a squared edge so that they can be "honed" by the user. The burrs don't last all that long so being able to sharpen them is an essential skill, even if they did come with a burr already on them. Thanks for watching :)

@@NippyKindLangur234 It´s just some objective criticism. No need to feel triggered. Feedback is important and before adding something a creator should ask themselves "does this add any value?". Many experienced youtubers have already talked about this and there are you with a comment that provides no value at all.
