I see! You've made the bevel longer and thinner. The bevels on mine are very short and thick.

Yes, long and thin is sharper but slightly more fragile. Well worth the trade off though!

Yesterday I bought a set of six Tork wood carving chisels but I wonder if they don't need sharpening before I use them - I'm a total newbie and I don't know diddly. But I've tried cutting into some wood with them and these tools just fon't want to know - my best efforts hardly dent the wood.

Perfect. The trick is not to let them get blunt. Keep on top of them with a strop or polishing wheel

I bought Tork - I think they're blunt as hell.

Thank you for the video. It is really helpful One question however. I want to make a strop. I have found a piece of leather. Problem is that it is smooth on one side, rough on tother. Question is which side do I use?

A very common question that divides opinion! Which means either side works! I tend to use the smooth side with a sharpening paste or wax. I suspect the rough side would eventually be worked smooth over time any way 👍

I’m not quite sure what you mean. If you’re referring to the end of this chisel not actually being square, then no it makes no difference. If you think that you want to square it it off, the do that before this stage.

@@curiousgeorge555 oh I see, no as long as you rotate all the time. There is very little pressure on those fingers so it all comes out smooth 👍
