To make sharpening easier use a piece of masking take on the top so you fingers dont start sliding down! I do mine 90 to stone for all sizes. I think Norton has the best video on sharing a chisel method. Your is also good for overall explanation James.

I really enjoyed this video. I feel like there were several tidbits in here that I haven't seen in other videos. Being abysmal at sharpening, I'm constantly on the lookout for new videos to watch to try and improve my skill.

Great teaching as always James!! I was also wondering about a pull only approach, especially for the super thin ones.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 жыл бұрын
some people do that. I do on wet stones but on the diamond plates, I like to keep the motion going and holding the wrist at the same angle. but each their own.

James made a good point about pressure being applied. First make sure you keep checking your work and check for squareness and pattern. With experience you will be able to judge just be feel if your in the blade top, the primary, or the upper corner of the primary. As you push or pull and your on primary you can shape your primary by driving more pressure on one corner than the other, not only do a few strokes and check your progress. Also slow and steady is key! No fast back and forth. It is cutting regardless of the speed! Free hand takes practice just like anything else. Go to any glee market and get a chisele for a buck like a ¾ inch. Degrease it and go to town. Practice till you get this down, from shaping, grinding, honing, then polishing as James describes. Also ref. Lee Valleys Catalog on sharping. Good ref on grit to micron sizes! Sharpeng free hand and without power tools is not about speed but but about quality that can be achieved by hand work!

"And yes, across has a t in it" LOL Way to head off the trolls. That was great, and one of the r as one we like you. That sense of humor is definitely an aspect of the channel that works. Great tip on bevel length vs width for approach angle to the stone.

James, on the small chisels, 1/4 and under, would you mess up if you only PULLED the chisels on the stone and not pushing? You did a good job demonstrating. God Bless my friend.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 жыл бұрын
thanks Frank. that is not a problem at all. and on a wet stone, I would only pull as I do not want the tip digging into the stone.

How do you keep your sharpening stone holder clean? Won’t the stones get clogged and rusted?
@WoodByWright

I just keep a rag beside it and wipe the stones off after every use. Using Windex as a lubricant never something I really thought about.

I've been reading and I can't find my answer, maybe someone here will help. When I sharpen my chisels (whatever size) they always get "unsquare" By maybe half a mm. I changed posture, position, even tried the Rob Cosman method ( not the ruler one but he propose to lower the sharpening stone to lock the arms) Still get them unsquare. (it pisses me off a bit when I try to sharpen my new narex chisel set.) Someone can help ?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 жыл бұрын
the most common reason is just putting more pressure on one side vs the other side. start by placing your pressure fingers on the side that needs more material taken off. The other problem is if you have the chisel at an angle to the plate it is easier to put more pressure on the trailing edge of the chisel. what type of stones are you using? are they all squing the same direction?
@pier-ricklamontagne275
@pier-ricklamontagne275 6 жыл бұрын
i'm using DMT diamond stones, 400, 800 and 1200. i've tried the 45 angle method (as you show on larger chisels) and the paul sellers method (kind of aligned the chisel with your body.) and both are doing the same thing. I guess my pressure is off on one side. i'll continue to practice with my older chisels (since I don't want to use too much my new only on sharpening.)

ya it sounds like a pressure thing. often just thinking about pressure on one side or the other is enough to change it. also keep in mind that a small angle to one side or the other is normal. it will disappear with practice, but with the right measuring tools you can almost always find them to be slightly out of square.
