Getting my first ever spokeshave, a Stanley 151 (or whatever number homedepot sells). Suggestions on what to do first?

I don’t know if you will see this but where do I procure a new file/rasp for the exact same holder you have in this video I hand a few with a “tang” on the back but none like the one in the video I just stumbled upon this took for a sweet price I felt of 10 bucks but the file is done so if you see this please point me in the right direction, for context I am a newbie to wood working but watching your vids I stumbled upon this and found one and knew for me it be a good tool to have. Any info is appreciated.

Try to find a Marples 12" bow saw blade. There is a bundle of about five being sold in England. Five. One bundle. Not two bundles. Fortunately my "vintage" Marples came last week with its original blade. Bent, but repairable.

Should only take three or four strokes at most. It's not a substitute for very accurate sawing, or a crutch for not being able to split a line with a saw.

BOILED linseed oil is poisonous. You need RAW linseed linseed oil for it to be FOOD SAFE.
@WoodByWright7 күн бұрын
Homemade boiled linsew oil is not poisonous. And even the stuff sold in the stores is not as bad as it's made out to be. In years past it used to be as they would use heavy metals as dryers, but now it's much safer. Although I still wouldn't use bare hands on the stuff from the store. But all that being said, if you make it yourself it's just as clean and safe as raw linseed oil.

Why do you have to pedal backwards
@WoodByWright7 күн бұрын
Because the rotational direction of the head needs to be the top turning toward you. It's one of those things that feels really odd and you think will be a problem but a halfway through a single rotation. Your body just gets it and you never think about it again. So it's far easier to pedal backwards than it is to create a system that changes the rotational direction.

How often do you have to sharpen your chisels and planes when working on such beefy pieces?
@WoodByWright17 күн бұрын
With good jiggles I only do it once every few weeks. If I'm using them everyday. The cheaper ones I'll usually sharpen once day and for the really poor ones I'll do it every joint.

I expect many of your viewers were hoping you would reveal a cunning technique for sawing only from one side while keeping the cut square rather than having to turn the work piece at intervals. Though you do mention that turning is required, I feel like this point could have been given more emphasis as not only is it necessary to turn the work piece frequently, it is best done in a in a systematic way such as counting saw strokes. If not the saw will inevitably wander offline on the off-side even when there is a saw kerf there to guide it.

I was wondering if you have used the Veritas one and how does it compares with the Stanley in terms of Price/performance?
@WoodByWright17 күн бұрын
When it comes to cabinet scrapers it's all just personal preference. Even the cheap one on Amazon will do just fine.
@trusch31622 күн бұрын
After looking into the confusing world of cutting board finishes, im thinking ill try this. Any idea how long it last / how often to reapply? Also, would this be suitable for wooden spatulas, or wouldd the finish "melt off" when cooking? Both will be made from cherry if that makes a difference.

Hello thanks for infos. I m living in Turkey and we dont have so many opportunities to reach many brands. I am curious which one is better Narex profi series or standart series? Does it make a sense? Whats the difference between them?
@WoodByWright17 күн бұрын
Their standard and professional use the exact same steel. It's just a different handle. The narex Richter on the other hand are different and use a much better steel.
@rehberharunsimsek17 күн бұрын
@ thank you so much. I bought a carving knife and chisel from Narex but they are doll. Should i sharpen before first use?
@WoodByWright7 күн бұрын
Yes, they're intended to be shaped and sharpened before use. Only the highest quality brands sharpen them beforehand and even then you probably want to hone them before using them.

You specified vegetable-tanned leather. Does the tanning method make a difference?
@WoodByWright23 күн бұрын
For this particular use, it doesn't make that big a difference. The most important thing is how hard you can get it. Usually the harder the better.

I make guitars and some of the pieces I use are like 24x18x1" what do you suggest for larger pieces of wood?
@WoodByWright23 күн бұрын
A larger vacuum chamber is always a possibility but usually very expensive. Most of the time at that size there's not much you can do other than using a penetrating epoxy
