How to sharpen leather tools?

If your leather hand tool does not cut, I am telling you how to sharpen it.
First determine the size of the area to be sharpened. Then cut a veg tan leather that size. Cut a 2 cm piece of leather at once. Then cut 800 grit, 1200 grit and 2000 grit sandpaper, respectively. Now is the time to sharpen. Fold the sandpaper over 2 cm of leather and sharpen them all in turn. Then polish the reverse sides of the leather you cut and polish both sides of the tool. Now you can cut with ease.

That vegetable tanning leather sure is crazy stuff. I always wondered which vegetable skin they use considering how strong the stuff is. If I didn't know any better I would believe it was made from cowhide 😉

I feel like you could have used your existing sharpening equipment as the larger piece. I'd also suggest putting a wooden piece behind the inner strop to give it stiffness and avoid rounding the edge grind

Сразу наших видно, пришли стали советы давать) Я сам зашёл в комменты написать чтоб стекло взял, на коже абразив с бумаги быстрее осыпается из-за деформации подложки и у инструмента закругляется кромка

Any reason youre not using a normal sharpening stone? Or this this more of a like "you dont jeed one to sharpen your tools"?

I often use sandpaper as it is more practical and inexpensive.

@@DogaArt thanks, however if a sharpening stone works (dont see why it wouldnt) i can also highly recommend one. Its mb 50 bucks for a decent one and itll last you a lifetime. Also gives a straight edge and you can use it for knifes too, however your method works well too, no doubt. Takes off a bit more material probably though

Yes, but for more specialised tools like this, you can't get the inside bevel on the back. And you can't sharpen the inside of gouges either. Bench stones can only get you so far, and slips or more specialised stones cost quite a bit.
