Perfect! I’ve been watching a lot of vids on this topic and it seems everyone else feels there is only need to address the posterior aspect of the blade, which I found utterly confusing. I’ve been experimenting with just this type of technique and finding it MUCH better and actually helpful in sharpening my edge tools. Bravo 👏🏻

I would say 120 is too coarse, you will take a lot of material off and leave some deep scratches in the metal. I would use 220 at the coarsest but usually I start with 320 and the go to 600 then 1000 grit. The string idea is great, I have been using the wood stir sticks from the coffee shop, cut they dont hold much polish compound.

Hiya, from my experience with the p120 I haven't had any issues with deep scratches in the metal, as long as it's a smooth surface beneath the paper you shouldn't get any. But if you feel it's too much that is totally fine.

Agreed. It's a pretty standard principle with many edged tools. Only use such a coarse grain to remove a lot of material to shape or create an angle or reshape any damage. Tbf I'd use a stone over wet n dry.

@@sloth_e I am right there with you, I have collected a half century of stones, sand paper wasn't as refined in my day as it is now. But either way, I only go as course as I need to to bring the edge back, anything heavier than that is just removing material and roughing the surface that you then have to go back and smooth out. Day to day leather work a strop is usually plenty to maintain the edge, unless you drop it, hit something hard, or otherwise ding the edge.

This Old LEATHER SMITH likes UR idea, if U want it 2 B easier try your mixture on a length of string attached 2 a nail, I have used it 4 a long time and find it works very well, GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

Am interested in what you use for a strop board. You mentioned tallow and powder I believe. Can you elaborate?

Hi Michael, yes its a mix of tallow and carborundum powder on some panel hide suede/flesh side out. You can also use jewellers rouge and other sharpening compounds.

I need to sharpen and hone my 10mm French edger but don't have a scrap of 10mm-thick veg tan, what about gluing multiple pieces together and sanding smooth and flat, or would this create two or three (however many seams there are) unwanted micro-ridges?

Heya, yes if you glue some leather together that's wider than 10mm and then trim it down this will give you a nice flush surface to use. 👍

Hi David, its panel hide flesh side out and I use a mix of tallow and carborundum powder on it. I think the jewellers rouge would work too. I then have the other side as just leather for fine polishing.

In my mind, jumping from 320 to 600 is a rather large step. When sharpening in never make this larger of a jump.
