I found my beloved scissors and they were in bad shape. Besides a sharpening they needed a thorough cleaning. So in this video I discuss some easy sharpening techniques, some correct sharpening techniques, and as always answer many "why's" about scissors. They really are different than most other tools in the shop and require different techniques to get to work right.

Those $3 scirrors are a lucky bet. Don't count on them. I've bought a pair that I threw in the trash after two trys. Others might work just fine for a while.

I've moved away from using the wire wheel on cleaning up the outside of shears. It seems to dig into any pitting and leaves a surface I'm not really happy with. I'm pretty sure this has to do with the combination of iron faced with steel (Rochus Heinisch perfected the method in the 1820s). Heinisch also patented the bowing of the blades. Interestingly Wiss worked for Heinisch before getting laid off and starting his own manufacturing operation.

Turn your glasses 180° with ends of arms pointing upwards.That way they cannot topple over forward thereby scratching lenses

My haircutter friend got mad at me because I was using his haircutting scissor to cut sandpaper for me skateboard. He was mad because that would make the scissor dull, but I trully believe cutting sandpaper just helps sharpening the scissor.

Actually for cutting paper, running the file diagonally across the secondary bevel for finishing touch will create micro serration that aid the scissors blade at biting into the material.
