Quick note if you came here because you couldn't shatter even a basic object. It is said in the video, but it's 2.30 in :D you have to freeze trans and delete history. Then shatter will work.

I kept getting this error when trying to run Solid Shatter: line 27: An error occurred while running the Solid Shatter script. Results may be invalid. If necessary, undo to restore the previous situation. The fix that resolved this issue for me was assigning the default Lambert material to my object and also making sure my units were in centimeters (I usually work in meters). I did notice that if I reapply the default Lambert material I can get it to work more consistently after shattering a shattered piece. Hope that helps someone else!

One big disadvantage of this built in fracture is that you have total zero control of how the crack would looks like, it's all generated randomly. A realistic destruction starts from the breaking point, and this built in feature cannot create that. SMH Maya, still refuse to step up the game after so many versions.

Nice tutorial. Do you know if there is away to re-shatter the pieces without assigning a new material(like blinn) to it? I should like to break some of the pieces into smaller pieces without a plugin or do the ugly workarond.

These annoying Maya "effects" are old as Earth and never really worked well in Maya - tons of problems and real pain to use. There was Blast Code plugin around 10 years ago, which was really good and powerful but it was discontinued. Blender has much better fracturing tools and usually if I need to fracture something I export object to Blender, fracture it there and then re import it back to Maya.

I recently used solid shatter to break up some thick wall pieces, basically set shard count to something like 10, and increased the edge jagginess a little. Re-arrange the pieces a little bit to how you like and that's pretty much it. The broken pieces will be pretty chunky, and solid shatter will create some inner faces at the areas where the piece splits from the others. I found setting the shard count to anything higher than 20 just crashes Maya.

Very nice, I was looking into options on creating procedural wear damage in maya, because I am bit tired of sculpting every single edge for high poly in ZBrush for quick assets for environments. Could this be a part of the solution? I didn't find more resources on procedural algorithms using maya, but I guess I could use this to create a overall damaged highpoly
