Just got into DE shaving at 42 years old and oh boy, I've been missing out! Some areas are easy to get baby smooth even as a beginner but those resistant areas (chin, neck and jawline for me) really give me trouble, always a slight stubble left on those. Thanks for these tips, you always seem to pack so much straight to the point no nonsense information in your videos!

My beard is medium density with coarse curly hair (susceptible to ingrown). For many years, I avoided shaving and just used a trimmer to keep a short stubble. Once I learned proper DE wet shaving. BINGO problems disappeared. More frequent wet shaving reduced ingrowns. Currently I prefer a relatively aggressive razor with less aggressive blade and I get close shaves (not too close to reduce ingrowns) very comfortably every other day. Thanks Geo.

Hi Brian, Yes, I don't like to overshave. I used to a bit with my Feather AS-D2 but this caused a lot of soreness and the Alum would sting badly after. I now carefully use more aggressive razors and don't need to overshave. My •63 Masamune or •68 open comb Gamechanger give me a great shave without the need for excessive scraping. Stay safe Sir, Dave.

Great tips and info Geo. This is the kind of stuff I discovered early on in my wet shaving journey. With regard to your nick, it’s important for many new shavers to understand that fewer passes/ less repetition is often preferred. Not every shave has to be BBS, and usually a very close shave shouldn’t be followed by another the next day. BTW, 2/3 of BBS is BS! For some, a BBS shave is a rarity. Excellent advice on practicing straight razor technique by using a shavette without a blade inserted. This is particularly helpful when learning to shave with your non-dominant hand. Finally, prep is very important, shouldn’t be rushed, and can easily be overlooked.

I tried that with a turkish shavette once. then a clasp style. If you have any stubble, you may want to tape the blade slot.. Your hairs will go in the slit catch and yank out.

As always my friend, excellent video!! You forgot the old man's spot...the terrible old man's Turkey Neck. Personally I use a technique of tightening the loose turkey neck skin as much as possible on the second pass and do an upsweep on the far left side and do an inverted "J" sweep towards the chin. Do the opposite on the other side of the neck towards the chin. I can go down, then side to side, then straight up then neck but the only way to get a real smooth shave on my old man's turkey neck is with that upward inverted "J" Sweep after the first downwards pass. GOD Bless you George.

I do have this question: do you shave you whole face bbs or just the cheeks? I try to shave my entire face bbs and I think this causes some irritation. But I was used to shave bbs with my cartridge razor and I'd like to have the same result with my safety razor. Greetings from Belgium!

14:30 got me scared - I developed ingrown hairs at the jaw angle because I committed the unfortunate attempt of J-Hook in ATG direction of my beard growth with pressure. It got very inflamed and was burning hot. I only managed to control it by applying ground aspirin pills dissolved in cologne(2 tablets in total) over the area. Afterwards, it exfoliated like crazy as a bad suntan and the beard thinned so much that it doesn't grow anymore where aspirin contacted! Same razor, same technique in ATG direction, it was.

With 3 passes i can get a BBS shave over almost all of my face and neck. All except either side of my Adams Apple. The stubble grows outwards from it both sides. Shaving ATG on that spot and a fair bit of my neck leaves it sore after, with a bit of rash especially when it rubs on clothes. Am wondering wether to go for a really aggressive razor such as an R41 (currently use a Bluebeard Cutlass after starting with a Gillette DE89 clone) so dont use half as much pressure to get a close shave.

But I've never been satisfied with the results around the corners of my mouth, it always would still feel bristly/stubbly around there so I'd so more passes and end up butchering my face. Could it really be as simple as I just need to puff that part of my face out a little bit by pressing with my tongue? I can't wait to find out when I shave tomorrow morning!

Hi, Geo! I like your channel a lot. I have trouble shaving under the nose area, and I agree that the precision tip of the cartridge razor is excellent for that. Too bad I completely ditched the cartridge razors for DE ones a while back. Is there any special shaving tool for reaching difficult areas such as under the nose other than plastic cartridge razor and shavette? There must be one..

I'm new to this. I really liked Harry's but they're woke now so NO MORE. I have been using Derby razors with a Henson and I unfortunately get some tiny blood droplets under my nose... nothing big, so I will keep perfecting my technique using your video. Thanks so much.

Thank you for this video, I am fairly new to wet shaving and experiencing big difficulties at the mustache area. The problem is that my beard is super resistant and super thick & coarse there, and meanwhile my skin is also very sensitive there and nicks easy, so it's really hard for me to get a clean and BBS shave at the mustache area, there is always a shadow left and I usually nick very easy when trying to shave close. Going WTG at that area always leave a super visible shadow, and when I go XTG the shadow is smaller but still very visible, so I feel that my only way to get a BBS shave at that area is by going ATG, but going ATG at that area is also super hard since my beard is so incredibly thick and resistant and my skin is super delicate. I just wish that it would be possible for me to go WTG + XTG and still get a BBS shave but it's impossible at the mustache area for me. So do you have any recommendation in how I could get a BBS shave at that area without too much irritation? I currently use a Edwin Jagger DE that costed around 50 euro, but I am thinking of trying to switch to something else (maybe more aggressive that can handle my coarse beard better), like the straight razor feather sr shavette, if it can give a closer and smoother shave for my sensitive skin and coarse beard. I do all other things that you recommend, using a pre-shave cream, shave cream, hot water, etc. But any other tips to help me tackle this situation would be highly appreciated!

Do you ever shave against the grain on the upper lip ? I keep getting terrible irritation doing this most of the time as it's really hard to angle the razor correctly and mostly it's the blade kinda scraping against my skin without the safety bar involved at all.

Dear GF: Watched your every move until the very end. You taught me some maneuvers I intend to practice, including the use of the alum block to aide in stretching the skin. However, what you failed to demonstrate or discuss is how to shave those long and parallel stretches of skin that start just below the chin line and continue down to the breastbone with the Adam’s Apple tucked in between. A problem I suspect many of us OLDER, MORE MATURE shavers agonize over. Not your problem at the moment, but perhaps you have some advice on the subject anyways!!!

In some spots where I shave with my dominant hand - which is the right one, usually on the left jawline and the left part of the neck, I develop razor bumps and I think, although I'm not sure, it's when I do "cross the grain". I shave every 2 days or so doing two passes but I don't see them after the first pass which is with the grain - I could be wrong though. What could be the cause ? I shave with a Rockwell 6s with the 6 and 5 plates because anything below that just doesn't do it for me. Blades I use are either the Feather or the Blue Astra. Firstly I thought they were the soaps I was using (Scheermonnik samplers) because other people have reported some irritations from them as well and indeed things were better after I stopped using them, then I found out that I am kind of allergic to Perma Sharps which I was trying for a short time and then I went back to the cartridge and shaving cream (just for a day, don't worry :P ) and problem solved. Then I went back to the Rockwell, having an idea what the culprit might be and I changed the soap, I bought the Extro Miele (AWESOME scent but properties ? Meh...) and I still have this problem, although it's way better and less annoying. Any help ? Greeting from Greece!

It sounds like it might just be your angle. Can you switch hands when you shave those areas? It might help.

@@geofatboy That sounds like a good idea, I'll give it a go but I think I found what was wrong. My skin can't tolerate across the grain passes!! Not sure why but I've shaved a couple of times now without doing across (just with and against) and no bumps!

Hey, Geo, thank you for the review. I have a curiosity: what is the difference between 3:46 scraping while going with the grain and 19:34 skimming while going against the grain? Thank you in advance!
@geofatboy
@geofatboy 3 жыл бұрын
Scraping usually irritates the skin and skimming does not.
@procrastinator6902
@procrastinator6902 3 жыл бұрын
Scraping means you have the blade perpendicular to the skin, the bar will usually keep you from hurting yourself too much this way. Skimming means you are completely parallel and missing or barely touching the hairs.
