Two years later and your analysis of lighting trends is still right on. Learning to simulate window/natural light is still key.

The greatest thing about these videos is that you are also showing us your flawed attempts and not only the good stuff. Very informative and well covered. Looking forward to seeing more from dphog soon and possibly some workshops as I'm sure many of us would like to learn from you.

This channel is going to be the next big thing in photography on KZbin. It has to be. It's got the trifecta; a passionate and knowledgeable host with a great personality, fantastic advice made accessible, and beautiful / consistent production values. Unfortunately this kind of semi in-depth format doesn't lend itself to going viral among the general population; so I don't expect there to be a million subscribers by next year. But among photographers? It's only a matter of time before dphog is household name.

Great video. I was told that food stylists usually spray all weird stuff on the food to bring out the colour etc. Wimpy food shoots...I Would not eat it after the shot... ;-)

Amazing video! Quick question: Would you recommend using a tripod for Micro? Noticed that you were using your hands to keep the shot steady, guessing you used VR lenses this time?

The set that day was chaos - we shot three times the amount of dishes I would normally do in a day - so we were running! Best to use a tripod if the situation is more relaxed.

I loved this video very detailed. Can you create a costing video for food photography. Will there be a different in the cost or model use for pricing for a restaurant, blogger or someone writing a cook book? what to conceder when setting the price and what are the normal industry rates (RSA). Not many people will talk about this from there experience . They play it safe by saying do a cost to business analysis ( which I agree with) but if you get asked out of the blue, it is a lot to take in as its an industry on its own. Example: This month I might shoot a wedding and the next month the groom want be to shoot his new sports car and two months down the line his wife wants food photography shoot for her cook book. By say sorry I don't do that I will be loosing valuable client not because I cant shoot it but because I cant price for it correctly. (I know the counter argument of specialising in one or two fields and not everything)Any input welcomed.

Hi, it will always be difficult. For me I think you need to create line items - like in film. Every thing that you do or use has a cost. Your time, your travel, your camera, your light, your gaffer tape, your assistant, your pre, your post and then their usage and the duration of usage is the standard international way. In RSA you can forget the last part as our copyright laws are different and even if you put it in a contract most clients wont understand - depends how badly they want your work at the end of the day.
