Really useful - thanks - particularly as I am coming up to do a shoot of this type myself (with a Sigma 50/1.4 and a Sony 135/1.8). I will be taking a small flash in case shop windows etc don't give enough light to rely solely on ambient.

Hey hopefully you're still taking questions for this video because I am just now getting into photography and I love the light! I am debating on buying the Yong Nuo YN300 constant light, however I am wondering what all can it be used for? Just night stuff? Because I was just about to buy an umbrella to shoot with but now I am debating on getting this.
@BachPhotography6 жыл бұрын
The LED is better for night time photography, but it can be used for a number of things. In the daytime depending on how bright it is outside it won't be powerful enough to overpower the sun, so I think its important to have both in your arsenal

Interesting video. I think your image out of the camera was a good one, and the post you performed on the background was solid. As you admitted in the video, you are guilty of overdoing the model: I though the eyes were unnatural looking and the skin was too obviously photoshopped. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing more of your work.

I play a lot with my eyes as well. I love eyes. I love adding a little bit of vibrance to t he eyes to make them pop, but I never add clarity in or around the eyes. Usually I find success in brightening them up by about half a stop, and increasing the sharpness very very slightly. Clarity as a tool (both in Adobe Camera Roll and Lightroom) is too strong in my opinion, (for the purpose of making eyes pop) and overusing it can cause wrinkles or lines near the eye to pop out as the eyes do, drawing unnecessary attention away from the eyes and resulting in a less than flattering look for the model. I also like to make sure there are beautiful catch lights in my model's eyes, which further bring them to the foreground and make them really stand out. I enhance the catchlights with a little bit of contrast and slightly higher exposure and in my opinion it makes them look great. I also like to crop a bit because I feel there's not much going on in the forehead or shoulder area, I like to get in nice and close, make it cozy, and really bring those eyes out. Here's a sample: imgur.com/a/aaAB3 This was a simple one light portrait I did in the studio.

@BachPhotography7 жыл бұрын
You should try to use at least 1/160th's if you can, for a 50mm. At 1.4 make sure that your model isn't moving at all otherwise this may make the photo out of focus. Also using a high ISO can make a photo appear slightly out of focus as you lose image quality at higher ISOs, so try to shoot at your cameras native ISO (100 for sony, 200 for canon)

What are you going on about? Editing was VERY minimal and this is typically how a client would want to receive their order back to them. If I gave my clients a product without the skin being retouched or blemishes adjusted, then it would look extremely unprofessional

Thank you for asking for comments on your image. I would like to do night images myself that is why I watched. I like how you are editing the bokeh and how you are able to achieve that. Nice work. The only think I question is not using a warm filter to make her skin match the background. She is much cooler than the background. So, I would warm her up. That is the only thing differently I would do. Thanks.

Thanks Janice, I agree about warming her up too, I should've used a colder setting on my yong nuo light so that my camera adjusts the entire scene to be more warm

Heard of video lights on and off over the years. How is it? Can you tell me a good reason why you'd use one instead of the typical flash units?

One reason is that you can make the light a lot dimmer than the lowest setting on a typical flash unit!

And thanks for referencing your camera settings, it really helps to give to give us a good idea of where to start. Can you please make a video in the future of the same video, but with off camera flash at night time? Like for example, putting the off camera flash directly behind the subject for rim lighting?

Thank you for your video and sharing your knowledge. I picked up a trick or two and appreciate that. Since you asked for criticism (good on ya) here's my personal take. I think you are already aware that your approach hews toward the technical, which, I believe, tends to lead you away from exploring/revealing the person. Watching your video, I see a playful model having fun with an umbrella and modeling with her whole body. Lots of fun possibilities there that would allow our minds to create a story and a personality around the image. However, in your portrait, I see a close up of a mask made nearly plastic through processing. No personality and no story. If I can offer you a tip in return, it would be to think a bit less about the model as being in service of an idealized image and a bit more about the image being in service of the model. By this I mean, try to find/provoke/capture whatever you find interesting about her versus pushing her toward a sort of generic ideal.

When you cut out the background anyway why bother with city light in the background of the model? The blurryness of the background is also not an issue since you can do this in ps also. Just make seperate shots of some lights and compose them later in ps. The only real inflence of the city the picture has is the street laterns. But anyway nice video.

I have a question about the YN300, what batteries does it take? Are they built in? Or regular AA batteries? And how long will the light last before you need to replace the batteries?
@BachPhotography7 жыл бұрын
You can get the YN300 in two battery models, mine is the bigger NF-F550 Rechargeable Battery (2200/2400mAh) version, which lasts about 30-40 minutes on full power which is pretty decent :). On ebay you can buy the light with a battery and charger for around $70USD
@RobynASDxxx7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Bach, i did a bit of research last night on them, they do seem to be pretty decent actually. I usually use Yongnuo speedlights for strobist work, but i think its time to experiment with continuous lighting for a change, so would one of these work for full body portraits or would stacking two or three be a better idea?
@BachPhotography7 жыл бұрын
They're not really designed for full body illumination, you'd be better off going for a big softbox setup for that. Originally they were designed to be video camera lights, but they're good for illuminating small areas for things like headshots

f/1.4 is not a low aperture, it is a large aperture. Focal length (50mm) / aperture (35mm) = f-stop (1.4), so smaller f-stops mean larger apertures.
