Thank you for posting this! Excellent explanation. It's been a long time since I altered a jacket sleeve and I really needed a refresher! I decided I'm going to end up with a sleeve length that's a bit longer than ideal so I can have the button not quite so close to the edge.

Your video was really well done. I have noted you are very knowledgeable in your alterations. Well done to you. I have to shorten a white very expensive jacket but as yet I haven’t decided about sewing up the buttonholes as the fabric when doing other alterations is fraying a lot. Jacket is problematic just need more time to sort it out.

Thank you for your kind words. It is best to spend some time thinking about these big repairs before diving in, especially with expensive/beloved items. I was actually a little paranoid that I might ruin my own jacket when I tried this, but it turned out OK 😅

What happens if you do not put the interfacing?

the problem is that the last button is too close to the edge of the sleeve, at least 1 inch too close.

Thanks for your comment; I probably should have mentioned in the video that the buttons would end up closer to the cuff, but with it being my own jacket it was a sacrifice I was willing to make. I don't think a lot of people would be too bothered (or maybe I'm just speaking for myself!) If it is an issue for you, you could look into more 'invisible repair' techniques - e.g. darning, felting - though its success would depend on the texture of the fabric. The only other alternative would be to take the sleeve up from the shoulder, but if you need to take off more than an inch it's not really viable because of the taper. Good luck.

Why not just replace the functional buttons with fake ones as most ppl wouldn't care. Am I missing something?
