As someone who made their living selling top of the line clothing, this could be a good time to discuss proper sleeve length for a suit/sportcoat. The perfect length is between 4 1/4 inches to 5 inches from the thumb. 4 1/4 if you don't want to show your shirt sleeve,4 1/2 to show a little sleeve or 5 inches to show a lot. Both sleeves should be measured from each thumb. It is rare if a person's arms are the same length.

The correct way of doing this alteration is removing the sleeve at the armhole and then shortening it there. There are limits to how much you can shorten but it keeps the vent intact with the original buttonholes.

Isn't it better to do this from the shoulder instead so you're not messing up the sleeve taper? And this alteration also gets way harder if the buttonholes need to be functional, right?

I am a seamstress and have to hem some sleeves for my son-in-law. The buttons on the end of a sports coat don't need to be functional and there is no way in the world you would alter the shoulder to make the sleeve shorter. That would be like living in Michigan and driving to Florida by way of California. If you think the sleeve taper is gone, then just take in the sleeve width.

Not professional, What happen to side vent?4 mistakes, 1,vent has to be open the buttom end(not close)folded edge must be inveasible stitched to sleeve body, 3, lining must be free,buttons needs to be stitch before sewing the lining,4,buttons needs to be close to each others,no space.(Shorten sleeves is one of the most difficult job in tailoring,especialy when you need to shorten more the 2.5inches needs sleeve remodeling period.
