In this video I'm going to explain what sidechaining is, and show you my preferred way to sidechain in FL Studio. There are a lot of ways to sidechain in FL Studio, but this method is by far my favorite. If you're new to the channel I do a lot of FL Studio tutorials, sound design tutorials, mixing tutorials, and general production tutorials.
Sidechain compression is the process of removing an element of your mix to make room for another element. A good example of this is the kick and sub bass. You want to remove the sub bass from the mix whenever the kick hits to help your kick punch through the mix harder. This can also help created more overall headroom in your mix, and help you get a louder mix (if you want).

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! There's a bunch of dust from Africa outside right now and it's really weird out there so I'm going to try to stay inside and play around in the studio for the rest of the day. Hope the tutorial helps!

Thanks David. I like how you do a lot of tutorials using stock FL Studio plugins etc. I am trying (very hard) not to download for free or pay for, a heap of third party stuff I probably don't need, at least at this stage of my education. Keep doing the stock plugin tutorials I really appreciate them. Thank you.

Wow I had no idea you could shift+click for a quick copy in the playlist. Awesome tip right there! Usually when I set up a sidechain I use the fruity limiter and then sidechain the kick to whatever instrument or bass needs some "pumping." I do like the idea of being able to draw your own shape with the automation clip so maybe I will give this method a try. Thanks for another great tutorial!

My go-to method these days is frequency side chaining. I've personally found it to be better than volume ducking as it focuses on a specific frequency (range) than the entire signal

Peak controller is way easier. You don't have to copy and paste every single kick in the track. It's nice to see the shape, but it's so much more work.
@Betadesk
@Betadesk 3 жыл бұрын
You can also make a short pattern and have a single kick and automation clip play, then paste the pattern around so the kick and sidechain are automatically linked together
@AutPen38

After trying a few methods (usually with the compressor, but also wig Gross Beat and Shaperbox) I think I might go back to using Fruity Peak Controller, except I'll link it to Fruity Balance. In the past I had the peak controller actually moving the faders up and down. It looked cool, but then you lose the ability to manually move the faders. I guess the downside of using peak controller is that you don't have a visual reference of the shape of the automation, but it's better for quick workflow, and it's certainly the better option if you have a complex (not 4 to the floor) kick pattern that evolves during the track.

Some people tells me that Fl studio has some latency, if you sidechain with the automation. i don't know it that is true but i use fruity limiter and than the compressor with a sidechain trigger or i use the free plugin tal filter 2, that is a plugin that allows you to shape your sidechain like the same as an automation in fl but than without latency. but a nice video very clear and great explaining. also the shortcuts thing are useful.

Thanks for sharing :) Is using the Fruity Balancer different than basically automating the volume knob? I also like the control you have by "sidechaining" with automating the volume , but doing it this way (copy and pasting it) doesn't allow you to automate any other volume changes you want in the song. Can you still automate volume changes if you use the Fruity Balancer to sidechain?

Can you explain at 4:30 what you mean by "shape this automation clip to the shape of the kick sample"?

The ducking should inversely match the gain of the kick sample. The gain of the kick defines its shape

Can I automate the fader instead of adding a fruity balance?
@RandomBakaStuff
@RandomBakaStuff 4 жыл бұрын
You can, but it's a really bad idea. What if you need to change volume of the whole sound later? You won't be able to do that, cause it will be getting back to the automated levels. The other small issue with channel fader is that it can't go from 100 to 0 or 0 to 100 instantly if you need it. The fader will be MOVING and that creates a filter attack/release effect kinda (it's VERY short though). But yea, adjusting the channel volume will be a pain in the ass.

It might be impractical for the reasons detailed above, but it *looks really cool* when your faders move up and down automatically, like the flying faders of an analogue mixing desk.
