Ever wanted to sidechain your bass but not the alter the mid and top range?
In this video, I show you 2 ways to achieve this effect.
It's a more advanced method of side chaining which can be much more transparent when used correctly.

Another plugin can you use is fabfilter pro-c2 and select frequency from 20-125hz, very fast attack & fast-medium release and treeshold around 18db so it will sidechain only on low frequency.Your kick will never clash again with you sub, if you want sidechain all low frequency you can move until 200hz Other plugins great to sidechain are : fabfilter pro-mb, waves factory spacers Nb : main feature you need to know about sidechain is frequency selecting, you can select what frequency you want to sidechain, this really important especially when you want sidechain your drum loops (where inside of patterns are include kick,snare,hihat,ride, percussions) you only want sidechain chain your low right? So frequency selection feature is really important. Try it 🙌🏻 cheers

You can also link peak controller to reverb. The reverb will go to zero if a new note is playing and the reverb will automatically go up again after the note has played. Really cool.

This is basically dynamic EQ, the same thing a TDR Nova can do
@inthemix
@inthemix 4 жыл бұрын
This technique is not Similar to dynamic EQ at all, I am not using the kick to reduce the kick, I am using the kick channel linked to the bass channel, the EQ is moving dynamically but it is triggered by an external channel. I love TDR Nova though, it's my favourite
@christianhardless
@christianhardless 4 жыл бұрын
@@inthemix You can sidechain the kick channel to TDR Nova on the bass channel, and use Nova Threshold to duck the kick at a selected frequency. The effect is similar to Peak Controller linked to Parametric, except Nova can duck to infinite. The downside with Nova is that it is more CPU heavy. In Nova, you need to select Ext SC and in the FL wrapper settings - Processing, select the sidechain channel as Aux Input.

I don't know what to say bro... Thank you so much for teaching me all these FL Studio tricks. I had no idea this was possible (the 2nd trick). The video is about sidechaining, but, to me, the most valuable thing that I learned is what the FL peak controller does and how you can link parameters to controllers. I'm a begineer, but I'm surprised you did not mention the use of multiband compressors. Is their cases where you would prefer this technique, instead of a multiband compressor, where you can control transients more precisely with the attack and release knobs, instead of relying on the exact peak signal / drawing approximate curves ? Super nice video as usual !

Thank you Michael, I was actually looking for frequency dependent ducking or sidechain, mainly for mis to high frequency content and percussion, so one sound gets out the way of the other to tame the masking and build-up of certain frequencies, as a way of taming the harshness in the upper mids, without removing too much of the presence, and these techniques were just what I was looking for 🙂

Where is the advantage of your approach versus side-chaining only the low band of a multi band compressor?
@inthemix
@inthemix 4 жыл бұрын
No real advantage, but in FL studio there is no stock multiband which accepts a sidechain, I believe!
@maslyz
@maslyz 4 жыл бұрын
Well there is a advantage: a mutiband compressor (MBC) like Maximus splits the bands, which creates a different waveform, that sounds very similar. The tradeoff: the waveform can have less loudness because of the the way most MBCs split bands (not linear phase splits). You can test this yourself if you run a squarewave throu a MBC and analyze the wave with an oscilloscope and look at the db meter. The disadvantage with the eq technique is that the targeted frequencies can not be muted entirely with shelf and peak filters.

Damn that Peak Controller is a beast. Thanks a lot bro.
@DelphinidaeZeta
@DelphinidaeZeta 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I would've thought using the peak controller would be the basic method and the manual automation would be the advanced method, since you can meticulously fine-tune the response curve in automation clips (or even choose when they don't appear) whereas your flexibility is rather limited with the peak controller. Side note: You mentioned negative infinity but the low shelf you selected bottoms out at -18 dB which is the cap for FL Parametric EQ 2. If one needs it to tend towards "negative infinity", one can, with a high pass. Obviously nobody will do that because then they can't automate the band's gain (which is the entire point of your demo), but I'm just noting it here for the sake of accuracy.
@inthemix
@inthemix 4 жыл бұрын
Good spot! Maybe a high pass could be used and instead of automating the gain, you automate the frequency dial so that it cuts from 5Hz to 100Hz very quickly?
@DelphinidaeZeta
@DelphinidaeZeta 4 жыл бұрын
@@inthemix Never tried it but I suppose it would work. I mean I've automated frequency before, but not at this speed. On the one hand, you'd need to tinker with it for quite a while to figure out how fast the dial needs to swing up to make sure the bass never doubles down on the kick's fundamental, but on the other hand, I think you could make some killer effects if you combine automating the Q of the filter along with the frequency ramp. I wonder if some of the harder genres don't already do that.
@Toothy7564
@Toothy7564 2 жыл бұрын
What if you automated the Parametric EQ 2's Mix Level instead?
@DelphinidaeZeta
@DelphinidaeZeta 2 жыл бұрын
@@Toothy7564 That's going to rotate phases by large amounts, audibly, every time you do it. Normally "phase issues" are a meme but in the case of automating PEQ2 mix level, it would be real, it would sound like parts of the sound are spilling through at random. Unless you turn on linear phase - which has since become an option -, but then you'll have to account for latency.
@Toothy7564
@Toothy7564 2 жыл бұрын
@@DelphinidaeZeta That blows. I guess the real solution is to, if possible, stack two or perhaps three identical parametric EQs on top of each other with the sidechain, which would make it -54 DB, nearly impossible to hear at all.

@@pekkapirhonen5527 Take Patcher, load in 3 Maximus. Route the input to all 3 of those in parallel and in the single maximus instances, you solo each high, mid and low band.

@@StephenOrion There's definietly a better way in FL, i use Ableton, it's multiband dynamics is more flexible for tasks like these. But alternatively you can buy shaperbox by cableguys, it is also capable of multiband sidechaining.

Great tips, very grateful, in my opinion the second is easy as the first one and it's not so easly to clipping! Thanks

This technique can also be very good for metal, when you want just the very low frequencies of your bass to duck to the kicks. In that genre moderate ducking will sound much better than full on ducking.
