How to Sidechain Reverb/Delay on a Lead Vocal

Sidechaining your effects to your lead vocal is a great way to get the vocal to cut through. Here i will explain a simple way to setup sidechain compression to duck your reverb and delay when the lead vocal is playing. When you hear the before and after it makes it very clear what is going on.

How did you use a stereo key input bus on your compressor? I only see L or R . I noticed you have bus a and bus b how?

aren't you affecting the doubler and the exciter and other plugins with the compression?? you compressed all FX so every time the signal hits it compresses the other fx too right? I think there are easier ways to side chain

i dont know why he put all FX on an aux track but if you route the Delay Aux Track to another Aux Track and u put a compressor there it will just do the sidechain

It makes the delay and whatnot have that sound more so than the dry track. Not a huge thing but mixing is really to taste. A lot of people have said what you have.

That’s correct, you can’t really route every track to every single effect since it will alter and distort the sound

I can't get this to sound good, Either i can still hear the delay throughout even though its faint i can still hear it and its still muddying up the mix or the delay comes in like a big distracting "Sweeping" type sound. Any tips?

The side chaining I understand for the reverb and echo but if you don’t mind me asking why would you decide to side chain a doubler and harmonic distortion? Those are already controlled through the aux making it thicker. If the doubler and distortion is side chained then don’t you only get e fullness in the echos?

overall a good video, but the first couple minutes wanted to make me pull my hair out. side-chaining FX for the first time is a slightly complex process. but it's made insanely complicated when the example has a whole irrelevant bunch of sends and buses between the vox and side chain. yikes.

Can anyone give a guideline for whether your reverb bus fader should be at unity or elsewhere while setting the comp settings? At unity would prob be a huge amount of verb to start. I’m a little confused by this :/ Amazing difference still! :)

Thanks for the video I have a question. I was taught when engineering a mp3 beat type of session to side chain all vocals and effects from the beat slightly. Would you use this trick and then route your all effects bus and your all vocals bus to a new bus and put a new compressor on it? To have this sidechainjng of effects and then all of it together from the mp3 beat?
