Great video as usual. I use the compressor trick a lot on vocal delays so that the delay is only heard after the last word of a phrase and is silent during singing. Much easier than automating the send level.

Thanks for sharing this trick. I tried the expander trick and it worked like a charm. I love the expander idea so much because without the tail of the reverb, you can get your reverb to blend in so well with the sound that one wouldn't even know it's there initially unless you have your reverb volume up quite a bit. In which case, I'd probably need to back that off a bit lol

The SC compression is a great tip for clearing a path for the vocal while retaining the tail. The expander I don't really get, I just shorten the tail in the verb if I want it to cut quickly when the vocals break.

its a great technique and i thank you for showing this, however i believe you mixed up 'upward compression' (when you boost quieter parts when signal drops below the threshold) with 'upward expansion' (when you boost louder parts when signal exceeds the threshold). pro-g is a gate/expander and not a compressor and so it does 'upward expansion' when set to 'upward' mode by this logic. somebody please correct me if im wrong, i see a lot of confusion about these terms online and i would like to have a clear understanding. anyways, this is a great video and perhaps one of the best channels on youtube on all things mixing :)

This and Pensado's Place are my two favorite youtube channels for mixing tips and tricks. Love the upwards compression trick on reverb man! Will definitely try this out. Would be cool to try using one verb with good early reflections with the gate trick and use the sidechain compression with a verb with a nice tail to get the best of two worlds if you ever found yourself in a situation where it could work/was needed. Or use it as a way of having dynamic effect change whenever the vocalist sings, like a chorus and a long delay or something.

Very interesting video. I prefer the expander on the vocal verb (though I'd personally like some tail on some mixes, which could be added in). I could see the compression working well to duck delays on a mail vocal. Subscribed, thanks!

I seriously just tried to grab your screens scroll bar to move up to check out the top of those vocal transients lol.. oh well it's still early.. but great video! I had tried this on a general reverb aux before and really liked it's effect, but thought I was crazy for doing it.. I didn't know if I was adding problems with intelligibility or dynamics, but to my intuition it just sounded more 'alive'... so probably good advice more like you said on a song "with a lot of space", and to use the side chain dry trigger.. you can really hear it sounds like a 'total washout' without the Ex-S.C. Comp!

Hey man, I just recently discovered your channel. I must say that it is by far one of the best pro audio channels I have come across. Really well thought out content. Your experience speaks for itself. Could I ask that the demo meterials could be a bit louder in your videos though please. What a Great Technique. I'm delighted I found this particular tutorial. For the longest time I've been using combinations of delay "tucked" inside slight reverb for the purpose of adding a bit of "snap" to vocals when the vocals stop...without sounding artificial or engineered. This is great as I want my vocals to be out front and clear from the backgrund music without having to do a lot of additional processing and doubling of tracks for separation of effects. Question: Wouldn't this also serve to reduce CPU usage as well? Or am I misunderstanding something? It seems like this serves to kill two birds with one stone as it would be less processing of additional effects through an entire mix without losing dynamics. Thanks again...I will be burning the midnight oil again playing with this. Cheers! Marty
