I alway thought that Paul sings, there's gonna be a time when I'm gonna "make you mine" and John sings, there's gonna be a time when I'm gonna "change your mind" at the same time, and this was deliberate.

I listened to that part several times and it sounds like Paul sings "change" and one of the lower harmonies says "make". It almost sounds like George is the one that messes up.

There are almost no "throwaway" songs by the Beatles. Even as a kid 40 years ago, I was transported by the harmony on "I--m" in "I'm in love with you." I'm not sure why that chord in particular, but you manage to nail it. Also: I had no idea John sang the his parts quite as low as this. As always, an eye-opener. Thanks again.

The hidden gem of all things Beatles. The octave vocals on the bridge just show how innately they hear the right intervals for their harmonies this early on 1963 ,fifty five years ago.

I'll Get You is one of my all time favorites. It is just so uplifting and positive. The harmonies are wonderful. Now once again you have allowed me to put the three voices together and see the end result. I absolutely love it. Those 3 voices. I remember when I was a kid one of my neighbors was about 35 years old when I was about 13, She would listen to their records with me and I remember her fawning over their harmonies. Their harmonies, their voices, fit each other like a glove. Thanks for showing me this one.

Hello dude, congratulations for another excellent job with the harmonies of The Beatles. I recognize that your work is brilliant and professional. I am a Beatles fan for over 40 years and I will carry this feeling to the grave. I'm not a musician neither nor a member of a music band, but surely I'm a fan of this extraordinary group that incredibly continues adding followers worldwide. Lots of great harmonies, especially on Abbey Road..Happiness is a warm gun, is a fantastic harmony from the white album. ..The Beatles certainly developed a great deal from the early days till the end with harmonies. Maybe that’s one reason we love them as much even today, for we grew with them as well.

I have thought many times how the spoken voices between brothers and even between close friends tend to mimic. When together, the pitches align and an external observer (in case of an indistinguishable differentiation from the perspective of the close friends) may point out that the spoken voices sound alike. With this simple song, I realize how thrilling is to perceive identical two singing voice frequencies that outside this song, have each their own potenze, range and peculiarities, but inside this song, melt into a unity. A straight line through the verse but, eventually, splitting to complement each other, but in a different way. And after that, camouflage again. This is just the counterpart of the spoken voice similarity: between brothers and even between close friends, the singing voices tend to mimic. This mimicry has not to be shown necessarily every time or at every song: due that, in singing, one is compelled to look for their own style, probably one may want to avoid mimicry (losing identity as a separate one) with another voice. But in the case this option (as in I'll Get You) is taken as a wish-to-mimic, the sonority's domain will give us (as a gift) an indistinguishable unit. After all they were friends, and they were playing with their voices and instruments. They preserved and persist the disposition to play. Every man who's been so fortunate to become the friend of a friend knows the joviality and camaraderie of mimicry.

One of my favorites! Great job, Galeazzo (as always)! I'd always assumed it was John on the middle harmony and George on the low (like they usually did it), but now that I listen more carefully to the original, I can distinctly hear George in the middle. And nicely spotted on the lyrical flubs (Paul singing "mange you mine", John singing "make", George singing "change")!

This is a surprisingly difficult one to sing. John and Paul are singing in unison for most of the song, which makes it easier for me since my range isn’t good really enough to hit Paul’s notes. What’s really challenging is the buildup at the end of the verse “...but I’ll get you, I’ll get you in the end...” which is meant to be the high point of the song, yet I flub it every time haha. Even so, I like singing this one, imagining myself channeling John’s raspy voice.

I love these latest videos Galeazzo, they are top drawer and always right on- like all your videos. However, speaking as an immense Beatles fan, I have to admit I very much miss the little commentaries you used to do-whether describing a particular quality that Paul and John had when they facing sang close harmony with each other (as we one discussed in I Saw Her Standing There, and also Baby's in Black). Given your experience listening to the Beatles and your knowledge of how certain recordings were done, were parts of your videos I looked forward to as much as the vocal breakdown. For example, in your recent Free as a Bird video, I had hoped you might have made a comment on the way the harmonies were structured...to me, and because Paul is obviously doing the arranging here, it sounds uncannily like where the Beatles last ended, i.e., the second side of Abbey Road. It feels like those 6 part harmonies in FAAB were closely related (and maybe even slightly progressed) from the harmonies in Because, and the backing vocals in Sun King, and She Came In Through The Bathroom Window. Anyway, as a Beatles fan who loves to take apart their songs and figure out what makes them so special, I really miss your verbal analysis or anecdotal info you might happen to know. I realize you are probably getting busier as your talents become more in demand, but for any other videos (and I realize there aren't too many left), please share with us a little about what you think is special about the song! But, as always, thank you for your work and these videos...I have been subscribed for at least 3 years and have always looked forward to anything you upload.

My God! I discovered this channel a week ago - these harmony analyses are so fantastic in every way - your talent, patience, attention to detail and overall presence are all simply too good to be true - the world thanks you! Questions: 1) Do you use any type of notation in your own learning process or do you memorize them all by ear? (and if so, do you have a system for the subtle pitch bends?) 2) When memorizing, do you completely learn one singer's part before going on or learn the 2 or 3 parts as a block? 3) Do you have absolute pitch? 4) Do you have any evidence as to whether Paul and/or John had absolute pitch? The consensus seems to be that George Martin did, but the others didn't, but there's enough disagreement that the question seems not to be resolved. 5) It's amazing that you sing English so well as a native speaker of Italian. Since Italian is historically considered the most musical language (lush vowels, smoother than Spanish but punchier than French), have you ever tried singing these songs in Italian? 6) Have you ever thought about doing a Crosby Stills and Nash song this way? (for example, Carry On from Déjà Vu has a tremendous little a cappella-ish passage).

Kevin Moore Hi 1) I don't use any notation as I can't read music also :) 2) Yes! 3) I can tune a guitar by using no tuner 4) No I dont but I am pretty sure Paul has :) 5) Thank you, no never tried but there used to be a band called Shampo who tried it :) 6) The problem with covering other artists is that the effort of making these videos is so huge that does not justify the low numer of views covering other artists provide. :)

Hello Frudua, Love your videos sir. Please keep the great work coming. Could you suggest the best way, a good tip if you will, to sing harmonies and not get tripped by the other voices in the harmony? Although I have gotten better with time at doing this, I still find that I am greatly influenced by the melody and the other parts of the harmony while singing my part. What would be your best recommendation to get over this (apart from practice, of course :) ) Cheers, James.

In addition to giving us the right notes, you're adding many great insights on the vocal execution. I'd also be curious in your insights on the actual composition of these parts - and this would be a way you could do new videos without any new preparation or filming. In other words, use the same audio/video but give us an analysis of the harmonization from the arranger's point of view - when to double, when to use contrary motion, when and why it works to use that open 4th & 5th thing the Beatles use so well, etc. The thing that got me thinking about this is the middle 8 of this one - "well there's gonna be a time" - on "well" John & Paul sing octave Bs while George sings an A - so by itself it sounds wrong - it sounds like George should hit a G - but with the chords it sounds brilliant because it's still a D at that moment, making it a D6 (and they were really into 6th chords at that point - like the end of She Loves You). So I'd like to hear your thoughts on the trade-off between making an arrangement that sounds perfect a cappella and making it sound perfect against the overall harmony of the backing track. Also that middle 8 sounds like it had a tremendous influence on The Eagles several years later. Or ... "to pretend" in 4ths! It's sounds so odd by itself and yet so great with the guitar but it does the same 6th thing against the D chord.

Kevin Moore It is a great idea , with ONE slight catch .. They (The Beatles) did NOT know why or how ..... I keep hearing John's voice totally confused about aeolic cadences , admitting he thought it had to do with "flowers" . ALL the magic was so spontaneous and organic, (this was brought up on the very first review they had on a "serious" musical study" ) that the master professor's were astounded . I recall a review (forget the reviewer's name) who mention . The vocals are SO intricate that you can not tell what came first the melody of the harmony. To this day we have the unexplainable ability of Paul to morph into John either on an attack a sustain or a decay.. In an interview Martin disclosed that at the beginning there were a LOT less double track voices 'cause the presence was just Paul and John singing exactly the same phrase, gain, key, sustain. To Martin it was unexplainable BUT he did called it MIRACULOUS . It would be a GREAT exercise for a group of global fans to tackle this and of course led by Gale , how can anyone go wrong. But I *STILL* get chills if I haven't heard a song for a while and I tackle some deconstruction . "There's a place" has had me weeping like a 4 year old for a week.

mickavellian Thanks Mick. Which is the source for that GM statement?
@mickavellian
@mickavellian 9 жыл бұрын
The Beatles Vocal Harmony Oh George Martin ! Woah - just went over my head . There's no source it is a feeling based on Martin's signing the Beatles after the first (Pete Best) audition. He HAD to be able to hear the complicated (and totally natural) intricacies of the melodies & harmonies which came so naturally to them. The brain CAN analyze harmonious or dissonant sounds (it is actually a survival thing) . This instinct is "standard equipment" in humans just better developed on some people who can also automatically separate the elements of sound. To me it is easier to explain from the visual perspective of ART . I have NO idea why I see "Guernica" by Picasso and break up in tears or anything by Van Gogh and become a weeping 4 year old (I actually had a crying fit at Van Gogh's house in Amsterdam) so my hearing may not be as precise as my visual sense but I still can separate (and remember ) individual sounds concentrate on a harmony and isolate it . This is a true story. When I was in Cuba I went for an audition to be admitted to the most prestigious music school in the country (Alejandro García Caturla conservatory). I already had some Drumming chops but VERY rudimentary (there were no instruments unless you had been accepted in a government school) The first "step" was a JOLT .... A teacher played a series of notes and I had to hum them back . That was easy .. THEN she played chords and I had to hum back the individual notes I heard. Not as easy but I made the grade as far as "musicality/tonality" was concerned. Then the percussion part was to reproduce a full rhythm played by the teacher on a practice pad . Including ATTACK, SILENCES, duration etc. The maximum was 24 notes. I nailed 90% with a 85% accuracy and got my entrance approved . Later I was told that only 25% of applicants get even near to a pass grade. "Oh shit REALLY?" (I asked ) and was told that most people on earth qualify as TONE DEAF. Quoting YOU, "They SAW Saturn and described it as a BIG BALL WITH RINGS.." :)

The Beatles Vocal Harmony And isn't this one of John's lowest vocal parts (1:42 to 1:54)? Sure is low, as low as Paul is high with his "menge" line. Does Paul really slide up like that at 2:16 and 2:22? Fascinating. And George from 3:00 on shows how he got the most interesting and least intuitive parts, yet once again... :) I would never have appreciated their vocals so completely without your expert harmony deconstruction. They blend way to well for my ear.

Brilliant. When did the Beatles actually practice the intricate vocals for each of these songs? Was it a separate practice before tours? Before the studio? In the studio? I imagine they worked out the basic music for each song, then came back and did a cappella vocal practice? Also, did each Beatle have a say in creating their own back up vocal parts, or did Paul write the song and teach John and George their parts that HE created? I've always wondered

John wrote it most likely (his voice is the more prominent of the two), Paul probably helped on the middle eight. The harmonies were probably worked out roughly ahead of time, but if anyone taught them their parts, it was probably still George Martin, as he was the arranger in their early career.

So the middle eight is actually 2 part harmony with John singing an octave lower than Paul.

Love how you messed up the lyrics on 0.53 just like they did on the recording. At least it sounds like someone is starting to sing the wrong word and recovers. Oh you did it later. "Mange your mind".

mickavellian Oh I see now what you mean Mick. IMO whenever a song reminded them of their early days (Everly Brothers attitude) they automatically entered that typical Beatles "childish" modality. I simply hear Paul doing this. He imitates John's vocal colour to morph in it and create a unique single colour.

The Beatles Vocal Harmony Kindda like sibling harmonies or twins speech uh? The connection is unexplainable,it is something else to see twins speaking their own language you THINK they just can NOT be making any sense but damn , when they argue you KNOW they are pissed. Since you brought it up I can notice if Paul is morphing the end of a phrase or an attack but the man TRULY is an alien.

mickavellian yes HE IS.... as I said before the REAL impact specifically McCartney had on modern music will problably never be understood. Let me tell you more... It's difficult to explain from Italian. After all this time working on the Beatles music and understanding the huge role Paul had on their evolment (historical) and evolution (musical) and the impact all this had on the whole World not only on the Music in general, when I sometimes stop and think about this and put myself in his shoes maybe it's just me but I wonder how he feels about it and feel a sense on loneliness... Like I was rocketed to Saturn without the chance to tell anyone what I am experiencing...

That's George Martin I'll bet. He picked out the harmonies and The Beatles were able to precisely do them perfectly.

I love you and your desire to share with the world the whole thing with singing,,,I just want to say,, not to offend at all , but when you say try to sing with with a 'Beetlesish accdent" I just want to say in case no one else , and also you probably know what I am about to say,,,, but as with all accents,, when they sing English ( american ) words,, they really miss the mark and from what I hear in your case your are from Italy and I can really hear the Italian flavor in your English ( american)< which makes me think that The Beatles did not sing with their English Accents,, they somehow managed to sing with an American ( english ) acccent interesting
