I have been practicing singing with the intention of improvement for a little over 2 years now. When I first started, I was much worse than I thought I was! During the first years, I pretty much took the opposite of the recommend approach to learning to sing. Instead of training for tone and pitch, I probably learned just about all of the techniques to help my dynamics for each song. Finally, after I ran out of new techniques to learn about, I started working on trying to master the chest voice. It's not there yet, but it has certainly improved a lot since I started. The only other thing I can think of that has improved as much as my low voice is my creativity with dynamics. I don't always aim for a thundering, dramatic opera style sound for every song, but sometimes I leave the soft pallet alone and go all out chest, and it feels good. For the past 3 weeks or so, my two main focuses are improving my falsetto and improving my mixed voice. When I started, if I tried to mimic a country singer, I thought I had to make a deep voice to do it, then I realized after a few months that most country singers are using a mixed voice, examples, Tim McGraw, George Strait. For the most part, mixed is getting pretty easy now, I'm just trying to keep building on it, you know more brightness, being able to choose the chest : head ratio that I am using, stuff like that. Falsetto is a bit of a psychological problem. I have been able to speak in falsetto tone for as long as I can remember. I think the most important thing is just to practice it a lot, and it should improve the same as my chest voice did, eventually. And hopefully, by improving the falsetto my mixed sound will improve. So, I guess the reason I started typing this chapter, here, right now I tend to strain my falsetto voice when I get to higher notes, since just singing in falsetto is pushing my range limits. If I could somehow learn to let go of the thinking part of it and just release the notes... I am wondering if anyone has any exercises that has really helped you for singing falsetto more easily. Just practice?
@maxkaddell5 жыл бұрын
Just in case anyone brings it up, I know about flexing the chest to get a more powerful note. I actually tried doing that the first week of practicing, but it's really loud combined with high notes. I need to develop more control rather than relying on belts.

If it's just this video that is incredibly easy it's likely because it's in the falsetto range, which is the highest register of the typical male voice(excluding whistle register) with it many baritones can sing well into the soprano range. As such this never goes down near the bottom of the baritone range near the bottom of the second octave. Try some of his other baritone videos before voicing yourself

hi jeff. falsetto in this video..is it the sound of a soft 'disconnected' sound we are training..or a more strong connected sound..the same as head voice? is head voice and falsetto regarded as 2 different things in your method? thanks very much. youre a legend!
@JeffRolka7 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate it! The idea here is to extend the range beyond cricothyroid dominant voice (commonly called head voice) into falsetto. It's your second point; we want to be strong and connected. Cricothyroid dominant singing (head voice) and falsetto are two different things, but I can't claim that as being my method only. Cricothyroid dominant singing is where the vocal fold is elongated but still acts as the primary phonation source and falsetto being where the ligament on the outer surface of the vocal fold is more involved in tone production. The airy, disconnected sound generally associated with falsetto (which can be used to great effect at times) is most commonly achieved when we're using the ligament at too low a tessitura. Does this adequately explain and/or answer your question? If not, please let me know so I can clarify! Thanks for a great question and thanks for watching! Best, Jeff
@markridoutmusic7 жыл бұрын
Jeff Rolka hi jeff, thanks for your reply. yes it does, so to clarify, falsetto is higher in your range than head voice? and the airy disconnected sound you described isnt necessarily a falsetto, it is more of a breathy effect people use at different parts of their range?

@JeffRolka4 жыл бұрын
An interesting question, but unfortunately not consistent with healthy vocal practices. Professional singers mask the points of transition so that we achieve voce piena in testa - the sound of chest voice in head. To the untrained ear it will sound as if the chest voice continues higher and higher but this is false. If you want higher notes that sound full and powerful, work on your technique at the naturally occuring transition points as opposed to pushing your actual thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice higher and higher. Continuing to strain your voice to f4/g4 will only obscure the transitions and make it harder to smooth them out. All the best, Jeff

I don't hear an airiness in your voice that I typically associate with falsetto. Is that because you've trained and have stronger vocal cords? Should I be aiming to retain the airy quality when I work on these types of exercises or work towards developing more of a head voice?
@JeffRolka4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, but it isn't really about strength. The key is the coordination of muscle groups as you ascend from chest voice, to head voice, to falsetto. It doesn't help that there isn't any consensus on the usage of the word 'falsetto'. Depending on whom you ask, you could get one of several definitions. I use it to refer to the range above the head voice range, where the vocal folds separate and dampen in order to allow for continue ascent. Best! Jeff

What's the highest note that your average Baritone can sing in Falsetto, please? I'm pretty much mid-range Bari, as opposed to low or high end Bari.
@JeffRolka6 жыл бұрын
If you're a mid-range baritone, with a secondo passaggio around d4/eb4 then your falsetto range would begin a P4 above that, around a4/bb4. Somewhere above that would be your highest falsetto note, but I don't think there's much 'average' in being able to successfully access that range. Like altos, that range isn't always developed as fully as it could be. That whole, 'baritones don't sing high notes,' fallacy. I hope that helps! Jeff
@CockneyRebel19796 жыл бұрын
Much obliged. I've discovered that I can go as high as about F5 on a good day, so I can easily sing along with many mid-range female singers. I find it hard to sing along with lower and higher-voiced female singers though. I'm a lot more comfortable singing high in Falsetto, rather than low. Would that make my Falsetto register equivalent to an Alto or a Mezzo-soprano, please? I've often wondered. 'Cos I love covering female songs in Falsetto, and I'm never sure if I'm an Alto or a Mezzo in me Falsetto register.

I'm a bass singer with a relatively good voice, but I haven't had any technical singing experience until the last year. Would I go about improving my falsetto in the same way as this video?
@JeffRolka6 жыл бұрын
Maybe. It depends on your context for the term 'falsetto.' Unfortunately, that word is used by different schools of singing to mean different things. Specifically the configuration of the vocal apparatus. What is your understanding of the orientation of the vocal apparatus during 'falsetto' singing. Best, Jeff
@Dadaadad2684 жыл бұрын
Hmm not sure if I’m doing this wrong. I was expecting myself to sound falsetto but ended up hitting the notes with a very compressed chest like sound, my vocal folds felt pushed together rather than an airy sound I usually have in this range!
@JeffRolka4 жыл бұрын
The term 'falsetto' is used differently in different schools of voice. In common parlance, it has come to mean what you described, but in vocal pedagogy it also refers to a range of the male singing voice that begins at the tertiary registration event. When making good transitions, it will match the chest voice. Sorry for the technical answer, but your question requires specificity and I would only confuse matters more without it. Best, Jeff

@JeffRolka3 жыл бұрын
What you have touched on is the reason why I titled this video this way! The word 'falsetto' gets used in different ways in singing instruction. In my courses of study, it is referencing a range that for tenors begins around b4/c5. If, however, we make good transitions across our registers, we get consistent tone across them. So in this video, on the longer, wider scales, you're hearing me start in my chest voice, go through my head voice range, and ultimately turn around in my falsetto range. I'm navigating the transitions well enough to have you think it's my chest voice, but it's not. This is not a trick. It is the accepted way of singing upper register notes in professional singing. When you hear vocalists singing these notes, they are doing this too. This is how opera singers do those dramatic high note finishes and how pop vocalists seem to have endless chest voice registers. I hope this helps! As you can probably tell, I'm pretty passionate about this topic! All the best and thanks for watching! Jeff

Jeff it sounds like you're singing these using full voice? is that because your range is higher than baritone or am I confused as to what falsetto means? I think I'm kind of mid to high Bari but I can sing all these full voice pretty easily except for the highest 1 or 2

I sing what's called 'voce piena in testa' so I mask the registration events to sound as if I have a 'full voice' sound wherever I am in my range. That being said, I'm a tenor, so I don't make the transitions in the same places as a baritone would. Nonetheless, voce piena in testa is the goal of these videos. Translated that means, the sound of chest voice in head voice. Best, Jeff

It really depends on what you're doing and how you're navigating to your head voice. Evaluate the increase in engagement as you ascend - that can often shed some light on how you're using your voice. Assess the balance of airflow and vocal fold engagement, work towards balancing it, and the sound will follow suit. Best, Jeff
