Being able to sing acapella with accurate pitch is an important subskill for singing in harmony. Don't rely on the distance between adjacent notes for developing a good sense of relative pitch. All pitches should be both heard and voiced based on their distance from the tonic (home pitch) of the key you are singing in. Having that solid, unwavering beacon of pitch in your ear will keep you from gradually wandering farther and farther off key.

I LOVE harmonizing on stage at church it sounds so magical and spiritual when done just right.... I'm the lead singer for our band at the moment but occasionally I get the chance to throw in some harmonies I either teach myself by listening to different versions of the songs or just pick up along the way. I use to be comfortable with singing melody all the time and just enjoying it but then I discovered I could pick up some of the harmonies gradually and now I feel like that's more my calling when it comes to singing! I just hope and pray and ask for any others to pray for our small church to grow in number and bring in more musicians and lead singers both male and female lead singers so I can go back to harmonising. It's a lot of pressure when you lead a song as others follow your lead - especially when singing in a church - so we need all the help we can get. I can only sing and I choose the songs for the church and organise lyrics for the folders for singers. But I'm so proud of our band's progress especially with the help of a professional pianist to help us choose the right keys for everyones voices. Since I'm unable to read music and only listen by ear. Singing is so fun... no matter what environment you do it in. Thank you for posting this video it gives me a lot of answers to some questions I had running through my head after tonight's band practice we had but it went very well according to everyone in the team and including me which is always the main thing and to have fun and focus on worshiping the Lord God Almighty.

Harmonizing has always been hard for me I'm a good singer and can sing. I am a tenor. If i harmonize by myself and I get easily lost and sing the melody. I have to be surrounded by other tenors. For me the best way to practice a song is a cd with only the tenor part and practice multiple times. For midnight mass we are singing Silent Night and were doing harmonies and Im so use to the melody. I have a hard time with change Im autistic.
@ramcario6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that it's really hard xD but that time it clicked to me (I've been trying to do it for almost like 10 years and I was 8 back then), it became so easy in an instant haha. This sounds weird tho that I can hear a faint sound of the harmony along a melody in a music then I just kind of go with it yet it's difficult for me to actually harmonize with some of the songs. Still practicing tho xD.
@jeanlibera Жыл бұрын
I was trying step 2, practicing the harmony with the melody. It helped me to just sing "la la la" for my part, instead of the actual words. Somehow, when you are just singing "la la la", it's easier to stay with your own harmony part. Then after you get good at "la la la", you could try to stay in harmony with the words.

Singing in harmony is very challenging especially when you sing in a four part choir. I don't play an instrument (I used to play French Horn in high school). I ended up hiring a vocal teacher to help me. Learning solfage ear training and lots of practice helped me but this takes time. I want to sing for a professional choir and am not yet there. My singing has gotten better and I can learn new music much faster now. Thank you for your video. In my humble opinion, it all boils down to learning and mastering solfege and singing on pitch on the major and minor scales.

Funny how, for a female, like me, this harmony stuff only works if I do it with males. Sounds dreadful with other females, like a whole lot of cats wailing out of tune, off key... But it sounds good with the higher female voice singing harmony with the deeper, lower male voice. (Or even a very low female contralto voice taking the low part and a not soprano type voice taking the high part. (There aren't too many old style Italian castrated high adult type male voices these days, though I have heard one adult male soprano and he had a beautiful voice.

How I learn the harmony part: find a youtube video of someone singing it and learn it. Lol. Very hard for me to figure it out on my own. I watched your beginner video and understand singing the third of the chord but I always get lost in the lead melody. The Beatles, Everly bros., Bee Gees are so good. I learned to sing the three part harmony of "Nowhere Man" from a youtube video. Your tip of singing the harmony as it's own melody line is spot on. I had to sing it along with playing it on the keyboard over and over until I had it down. I recorded on my DAW and would record each harmony line with the lead turned very low so I wouldn't get caught up singing the melody. Before in-ear monitors, singers would often cup their ear so they could hear themselves without falling into the lead melody. The Beatles are my favorite and Paul, John, and George did it so effortlessly. Like getting good at anything, it take a lot of practice.
