Hey just wanted to throw this out there! A lot of these runs are a little more complicated than our ears can pick up. The run @5:10 where he goes “oh” is actually 8 notes. Nice video by the way!
@indieartistschool3 жыл бұрын
You won't believe how many times I just replayed that to double-check, haha! You have a good ear. I think what you're hearing is his tremolo, in the beginning, I mean technically we're talking semitones/overtone difference. But even after re-listening I only hear 6 clear notes. Oh, and thank you!

I am not racist but I'm gonna be honest and truthful with what I am about to tell you. I started singing 24 years ago at the age of 15 (I'm 39 now) and I couldn't do melismatic vocal runs at all to start off with. 4 years into it, I got criticized by other black singers for not riffing and running and told me that I needed to do it in my singing. As a black person, I took that to heart and started pushing myself to learn melismatic riffs and runs simply by listening Whitney, Stevie, Beyonce, Usher and the list goes on. Now, I like singing them and I still wanna get better at them.

@ShaneelChanderpaul2 жыл бұрын
Do these artists think about their songs this way and learn how to do this, or do they just freestyle it and go with whatever feels best?
@indieartistschool2 жыл бұрын
Great question! There's no way to know for sure without asking them. But in my experience, it is a mix of both. I found that I created more intricate vocal lines naturally after exposing myself to music with it. So, it's the natural influencer of inspiration. Whether created consciously or subconsciously. Once you understand it, you can recreate it or make it your own.
@ShaneelChanderpaul2 жыл бұрын
@@indieartistschool Thank you so much for the video and the things you teach, it's extremely helpful, and that's what prompted me to think about that because it occurred to me that if you understand it, it's easier to do rather than just relying on spontaneous takes. And thanks for the great answer as well :)

brent is a studio singer lol. he can sing but his voice needs lots of work and training. almost sounds like he’s straining his natural voice he struggles on live performance. can’t wait to see his vocals mature and at its full potential
@indieartistschool7 ай бұрын
Interesting observation, I haven’t seen him live before. It’s possible he overused his voice on tour or didn’t have proper vocal health practices to sustain him. Tours can be quite challenging and hard on an artist’s voice if they don’t have the tools for vocal preservation.
