If you did not, then I'll share a useful tip with you (that I learned from another video and it helped me so much!!) - in order to find the harmonizing note, then you have to find the 'Mi' of that particular note.. Like, in this video itself, I had trouble finding the harmonising note for the second starting note (the one at 2:30), but in your mind, if you keep that note as 'Do' then sing the Do Re Mi from that note onwards, then the 'Mi' will be the harmonising note.. It fits perfectly!! I hope that did not confuse you any further.. I shared this because it helped me so much!!!

Flat, or sharp is simply a case of ear training. One thing that helped me was playing another instrument. It doesn’t matter which instrument, simply tuning a guitar helps with pitch. Try singing only harmonies to songs you love, not the lead vocals.... Practice, practice, practice, and best of luck

You just need to try more times. More than likely you can eventually get it if you don't give up. Listen to some recordings of people singing harmony, pick out a part that is not the melody and try to sing with them. Practice, practice, practice.

Same here! I think the challenge is to know if you should harmonize in the higher or lower note. The other day I randomly harmonized to Ed Sheeran's Perfect, but that's the only song I managed to harmonize on my own... I tried a bunch of other songs and I can't harmonize at all =(

@FlorMaria Thanks! To answer your first question, I know letting people in to see what you've poured your heart into can be a little scary; music in particular can feel as personal as it gets. All I can say is let your love of music overtake your fears. If you have ideas burning inside your head, you have to get them out. If there's music in you, then that's a part of who you are, and maybe your friends and family need to know that about you. :) For a microphone, what to get depends a lot on your budget and your goals, but in general you'll want a large diaphragm condenser (if recording vocals). As a starting point, I really recommend the build outlined in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqbMe5Z8m6mmfpo A common alternate path to that is to just use a USB mic. I don't use USB mics, but I've seen recommendations in the comments of my videos for the Blue mics, both the Snowball and the Yeti, and I've read good reviews of the Shure PG42-USB. USB mics definitely have some trade-offs in terms of flexibility and sound quality, but they're also simpler and cheaper than a full studio build. Video editing software depends on your system and personal preference, but the top programs for PC are Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas. I don't use a mac so I've not much insight there. In terms of how to compose or improvise harmony parts, that'll require a longer answer that I had better address in a future video.

@JoeDoe27 жыл бұрын
It's easy to get caught up in the idea that harmony means maintaining the same space and direction with the melody at all times. For me, this probably comes from looking at choir and sheet music, or listening to records. This video shows how one can think of it as two melodies doing their own thing, such as one moving down while the other is moving up, and even crossing each other. The notion that one is going to always sing in thirds, fourths, or some other interval, or always moving in the same direction has to be debunked. This video serves that purpose, and is useful not only for voices but for instrumental arranging as well. Thanks.

This is good! Another thing I find very important for harmony is developing a good intuitive sense of accompaniment. I like to do simple exercises going up and down the piano asking my students to harmonize parallel and not have to worry that much about keeping tune and yes use the other note as the reference point to your own, feel the direction that the original is going and use your intuitive knowledge of the scale at hand to accompany the melody correctly

To add to what he showed here: If you have a chord chart for your song (easy to find these online), you just need to know what note of the chord that the melody is, and then you can sing ANY of the notes found in that chord. If you have a piano, you can easily find your note. E.g. if the chord is D major, just find a chart with chords and which notes are in them, and then find which one is the melody. All YOU have to sing is one of the remaining notes present in the chord. If the melody note is an F#, then you could sing an A or a D with that F#. This won't work on every single note, but it's a good start.

He sounds angelic.... I could learn to harmonise with him, even I find trying to imagine notes harm, being soprano and used to taking the lead and rising above all the rest of the lower voices. But I hate having to sing with tenors, though... Harmony singers feel so nice to sing with..But I could never sing harmony myself. I always veer off to the main lead melody. It is a real skill to be able to sing harmony well and not dominate over the lead higher voice. It really does enhance a vocal performance. Even if all the harmony singers are just so Hong "Oohs" and "Ahs" or just humming. I often marvel at how skilfully they do it, always coming in right on time, never too loud, always hitting the perfect harmony notes on the correct beats. One wrong note and it sounds off. Amazing skill and often under estimated because dominant lead higher voices, like tenors and sopranos or loud bright higher pitch instruments grab all the attention as the lead.
