Corporate Music - How to Compose with no Soul

In this video I explore how corporatism produces soulless music, some of which is amusingly awful! I also explore how tech and oil companies with dubious business practices use music as part of propaganda campaigns to convince the public that they support ecological activism. With some music theory thrown in along the way, I also compose a few kinds of different corporate styles to show the various tropes that exist. Some of it is blundering nonsense. Some of it is a little more sinister. All of it is garbage. Enjoy!

Great breakdown. I love how subversive the music you made is. It's so banal and typical but intentionally so. I wonder if there are composers working for corperations hiding all kinds of easter eggs in their music now. I mentioned on your patreon page that I liked the music both ironically and unironically. I'm still.curious as to why I actually like it. I can't really figure out why. They are banal, but something about it works on a part of my brain. Okay, so you can break down corporate music - but what's actually the problem with it? To me, it just sounds like you are complaining about the predictability and, in your case, personal over-familiarity with the music. The music does its job in all the emotional applications you included as examples and I fail to actually see your point of calling it soulless (music by numbers doesn't make something soulless - just trite and effortless).

Corporate music is also a way to make things weirdly neutral. Some people don't like metal, some people don't like EDM, some people don't like classical music, and so on. Relating something corporate to a "tribe" or "culture" can cringe all parties for different reasons, but by making something NO ONE can relate to, it makes it neutral by being hated, frowned upon or simply being ignored BY EVERYONE.

My immediate surroundings make fun of me for constantly pointing it out, but whenever you look at our current state of affairs and wonder "Wait a minute... Why did this stuff become worse over the last 20-30 years?" it's basically always capitalism getting its hands on another industry. "Why does public transportation suck?" It got privatized and the different owners care more about their own profit than customers. "Why is energy so expensive?" Again, there's a comitee of like 50 dudes playing manager and CEO of energy companies that need to make a profit. More important than people being able to pay for heating in winter after all. "Why is telecommunication infrastructure so lackluster?" You will not believe me when I tell you this...

Important to note that the concept of capitalism itself isn’t a bad one. The issues we see today are growing monopolies and diminishing competition. When everything is dictated by almost the same handful of elites, you get this whitewashed, uncreative blather with only one purpose: increasing profits at all cost. Ideally, capitalism would involve equal opportunity for all comers to compete in the national/global market. But that’s been slowly eroded by laws pushed by lobbyists and more takeovers by the same few companies.

I'm a diehard EDM fan, and I agree with this. It's ironic because I enjoy electro house and whatnot, which is basically what corporations are trying to shove at you, but they took away all the "go crazy" energy and watered it down so much to the point where it's not even designed to be listened to. It's just made to accompany an advertisement. (This kind of music usually falls under the subgenre of downtempo)

This one is kinda hard to avoid I think. It's so ingrained in people's minds that futuristic music isn't futuristic at all if it doesn't sound like something out of the Tron: Legacy OST. If you don't do this people will criticize you for it, and if your trying to sell a product for whatever reason not doing this could hurt that goal. Sometimes what the general population thinks music is can be a problem as well. Have you ever watched the newer Voltron series? It's not a great show but it was pretty popular for a while, despite having some of the most generic music I've ever heard in TV.

Corporate music is perfect to study to. Years ago (mid 2000s), when I had to study intensely for long hours to pass my state's bar exam, I decided I needed background music, but it couldn't be Jazz, or Hip Hop, or Hard Rock, or Western Classical, or Reggae, or even Heavy Metal either because I liked all those genres. I chose the music of Spyro Gyra- a band you hear on Lite Jazz/Easy Listening stations, which I never liked for years. In the beginning it was perfect because I could focus while this weak sauce easy listening jazz band played in the background. Then, something annoying happened....I started to LIKE IT!! Spyro Gyra's music is a lot more complex than I thought and after a few weeks, it started to distract me. Now I'm a huge fan of Spyro Gyra, but listen to ASMR beats instead to study.

I think there's something to be said about writing music with the intent of "maximal inoffensiveness", where the goal is to be disliked by as few people as possible. After all, music is a sensual phenomenon. Its purpose isn't to benefit some objective understanding of the universe, save lives or even necessarily communicate information universally (though it can serve similar goals). It's to make our little synapses happy. And if we can't get those synapses to agree on how they should respond to Adderall, how can we expect them to agree on something as subjective and personal as music taste? Forcing your taste in music on other people almost feels rude on principle; I wouldn't dare bring a bluetooth boombox on the metro because even if other people would like my selection, someone else might not. Even then, it almost feels territorial. But there are situations where a company might want to force this sensual media on strangers, not because people request a little light techno at business meetings and Dvorak on hold, but because the alternative is awkward silence. And since you can't get a boardroom full of people to share their taste in music, you must concoct an alternative to music - an auditory wallpaper. Even if it isn't remarkable enough to make a vaporwave compilation, nothing pokes out to the point of provoking agitation. It's the contrapositive of many people's conception of formulaic pop. One is meant to please the most ears, while the other is meant to displease the least.

They need something that they can just grab and cut to length. You can't have that AND emotional progression at the same time. I think I like the "nothing" music sometimes. Actually, I'm even willing to go as far as to say I dig it at times. It's the kind of music that fills the void, gives minor soft distraction. Perfect for functional state of apathy.

​@@Artemis-ty4sz, thank you very much! I gave it a short listen just a few minutes ago. Though, it's a bit too relaxing for me to keep up a workflow. I did like it, however, and intend to revisit later. When I mentioned "functional state of apathy", what I meant is such a state where apathy mixes with the rhythm of the work, resulting in everything feeling like a blur and occurring without much consciousness put into it, yet at high productivity. Almost like a flow, except rather than engagement, there's complete absence of it, having your motions and thinking process go on autopilot. This doesn't have to be just the menial work either, it's just that the thought process is occurring almost at the back of your head, near mechanical in nature, while your actual thoughts are put elsewhere (or nowhere, for that matter). So, rhythmic and directionless, yet not ethereal. For prime example, something like 神保 伸太郎 / Syntaro Jimbo's "Shapeshift", Nine Inch Nails "Reptile" would work just fine for that kind of mood (for me personally). The later one has lyrics, so might not be a good example, but both help to detach oneself from the reality of whatever it is that's going on, without disrupting the flow of said labour. I am terrible at music genres, so if you could give me another suggestion that would specifically cover this kind of music that I mentioned, I'd be quite happy! So, something with industrial motives or otherwise a kind of a motion feel to it, yet neither being too heavy nor breaking off from the established rhythm. Similar to ambiance, in a way, in regard to how stable and non-intrusive it is.

There is an album called “Farside Virtual” by James Ferraro that perfectly encapsulates the emptiness in corporate music. It takes many of the tropes of corporate music from the 90s and early 2000s and turns them up to 11. It is one of the strangest and most anxiety inducing albums I’ve ever listened to and creates a super enveloping and terrifying atmosphere.
