Matt you are brilliant love your sense of humour. I was waiting for a video on this very exercise. Began doing this nearly two weeks ago and was in so much pain. Right knee was exploding. Now l am getting more flexible, doing it thrice a week. Though l haven't tried the position on the sofa to strengthen my bum. Just a question. I'm aiming to do the squat by doing the follow along knee exercises with ankle weights, do you think the above exercise will this help. Lol from London England

Hmmm... how about being flexible and no problem sitting like this but every time my lower legs(from knee down) are starting to sleep/stop getting proper blood flow. Thats my reason why i don t like to sit like that for more than a few minutes without moving constantly. With a small "kneeling stool" which takes the body weight off my lower legs its fine.

I struggle being able to close my right knee fully to sit on my heel. I could always do this pose easily but recently the right knee won’t fully close by about 2 “ .. any advice? I usually put a yoga block between heels and butt to relieve the problem

Matt, this is exactly what I’ve been waiting for! Although it feels like my knees are going to explode, it’s in my calf muscles where I feel this the most. There really do feel they will pop at any time!! I do desk work and have done for years, and have been sedentary for quite some time. Will these exercises help with this, or should I be doing something for my calf muscles too? Thanks in advance 😊

Gonna use this comment to add another exercise that I've found to be the perfect one. Use pillows and supports! You will probably feel it easier to practice if you don't look like you're trying to hump your couch or get caught by your naughty stepson. Put pillows (as many as needed) to cushion (haha) your body. You can rest your legs in them and sit on a box or bucket. You can them evolve to only using a few cushions to prevent you from going all the way down until you're comfortable to be or your knees straight up.

Seems I’ve spent much of my working life spending hours in this position usually on hard concrete floors. I’m 60 and still working. Thanks for this video I always thought this was an unhealthy position cause colleagues have always told me to use cushions or knee pads and also I’ll eventually get pins & needles after a long period. You’ve given me ways to explore and engage with this movement and I even have created my own little knee exercise from watching this video. And I still try to squat at least once a day. You taught me that one.

Wow, this is perhaps the first stretch exercise I can do. Interestingly enough, I do it for a purpose not mentioned. Few years ago I tore my right meniscus. Every once in awhile the meniscus was going out and the pain would drop me. Literally had to scream and crawl. The doctor said nothing would help except surgery. So I began to stretch the knee and of course the furthest I could stretch it was sitting on my heels and attempting to lie backwards. It’s been years and no recurrence of the meniscus problem. Never seen this as an answer to such a meniscus problem, but it worked for me.

However, while I'm sitting in this position I can feel the brunt of my weight directly over the front of my ankles, so I wonder if I'm cutting off the circulation there. I think if I did this for 5 minutes, it wouldn't be a problem. If I sat like this for 15 minutes or more, I think I'd get more and more numbness, and maybe would have difficulty getting up.

I have been ill with Lyme since '89. I haven't been bed bound all that time but I did go through many years of little activity since walking up stairs could make me feel faint. I am very out of shape. I have horses and adore riding as well as working with abused horses to help them but with so little energy and so much pain I have felt like it is impossible. I have made a lot of progress over the last 4 years with my health but whenever I looked at videos about beginning an exercise plan it just seemed just plain impossible and misguided. I want to aid my body in healing and growing stronger, not set it back. I deal with a lot of pain especially with the arthritis in my knees, the bursitis in my shoulders/knees/hip and the sciatica. I just have been so discouraged Then I came across your channel I was so relieved at the helpful content that you have created here. It was as if you were speaking to my issue directly. I just wanted to let you know that you are helping me, at 61 with chronic illness, get my body back in a healthy realistic way. That is such a relief. Thank you.

For a while I’ve been toughening myself by going straight into position and force myself to sit 2-5 minutes. After a week I realized I gained absolutely nothing. My butt can touch the heel though but from ankles on up burned like torture. Standing up was a challenge as I had to slowly rise up as if I was in a car rear seat for several hours. My calves and thighs felt like bricks and as a runner I made them to be like tree trunks. Muscle bound legs 😂

Lesser polite ways of sitting are 跌坐, cross your legs with feet on thighs, and 箕踞, extend your legs. A fourth way of sitting is 胡坐, squats either on a small chair or your butt touches the heels and your thighs touch the calves. Kneel sit is for praying, cross leg sit is for meditation, and squat sit is for relaxation.

So I know my butt muscles are weak as I sit way too much. After doing the exercises on the couch, I can get almost sitting clear down on my heels when sitting on the floor but have pain in the tops of my feet.

I've been a computer nerd during all my teenager years and would just spend the entire day sitting on a chair. After i grew up, i got a job where i would just be sitting in front of a computer all the time, and now i just realised i can't even get in this seiza position. My knees are stiff AF and it just hurts to even try it, i can't believe i let it get to this point, i can't even do a simple squat with the heels off the floor, and the asian squat is just impossible to me. I'll start working on my knees and ankles mobility and try to just become a normal functioning human being again, just like when i was a kid

This, and the videos about being in a squat and criss cross apple sauce, are fantastic! I work with children, so i often have to get low to the floor. Its really uncomfortable for me. These seem like good ways to start working on getting comfortable when im not sitting in a chair

When I sit on my heels or squat the backs of my knees hurt. I've always been pretty flexible and have squatted throughout my life comfortably. This is a new development and super frustrating. Thanks for your videos.

I have been in hot yoga stretch classes for two months and couldn't do Seiza. It got better, but not good. My right knee felt like it would explode. I went to a stretch place yesterday..they worked on my hips..soooo tight...and last night, my right knee popped into place!! Telling me, it's not my knees that are limiting my Seiza...it's something else. I found your video...and I'm so glad to have an action plan now!!!!

I have found wiggling the toes and flexing them while sitting, as well as occasional lifts of the butt off the legs to adjust, to help immensely with static numbness as you train your legs to sit seiza-style

I wonder what knee pain / surgery rates are in the Muslim world...If you are doing this 5 times a day I imagine your knees stay reasonably functional and pain-free for most of your life (assuming no athletic, accidental, or traumatic injuries).

May be 3 to 4 % people are suffering from knee pain .But in my family as I noticed no man even my father had knee pain (He had passed away ).but women in my family after the age of 50 are suffering from knee pain due to diabetes or cholestrol prblm. Only three women out of 12 are suffering knee prblm.

This was fun. I could sit easily but my shins were on fire. The exercises showed me that my lower leg muscles need some stretching and strengthening. I wear special shoes indoors, though I was a barefoot all day person for years, to prevent slipping and because I have no padding in the soles of my feet to walk on, now that I am over 65. Is there a method to build up youthful padding on the soles of feet?

Thank you for the hearted reply ,but I started following long time ago .Most the series of adjusting a tilted pelvis ,from there things IMPROVED immensely, because I had PHYSICAL therapy but they told me my back ,lumbar, titled pelvis there is no fixing. SO I have been walking with a cane from a foot drop ,although I can stand but I had big LIMITATIONS, so I refuse to settle.Through research I found your video ,I pushed myself for the dead bug exercise and squat even slowly can to try Asian squat oh yes ,but I want to be CONFIDENT in plank and lunges. ULTIMATELY IT WAS TO REGAIN MY POSTURE MY BALANCE MY FLEXIBILITY IN ORDER TO PERFORM MY MUSLIM PRAYERS ,from standing we bow to go down for prostration to this sitting in the heels then slow go back to standing ,we have sessions in 24hrs ,I refused to sit in a chair I get conscious of my LIMITATIONS. TODAY after fixing my diet doing low carb and long fasting ,I'm pain free, more energy, I move around better ,my sleep position are painless ,my afford paid off from doing much the dead bug and proper bridges from your video ,I can do my prayer ritual easily even stand longer during long recitation. My body slowly regain its strength and FLEXIBILITY.IM TAHNKFULFINDING YOUR CHANNEL,and Thank you for your dedication.

I have bad knees due to years of impacts, but I've always sat like this, even as a kid. In fact, I always got told not to "perch" by the adults in my life. I'm sitting like this in my chair right now, it's more comfortable than letting my legs dangle in front of me. Yet, walking more than a mile makes my knees swell up and become very tender. 100% a muscle flexibility thing.

I just found this - will definitely try. I USED to be able to do this - this was my preferred method when I was little - in kindergarten and primary school - well at least the very start of primary school. then when I was 6, first year of primary school we moved, and my teacher *made* me sit cross-legged on the floor like all the other children - I found this painful & uncomfortable - but she was 'teacher' so did what I was told. knees have never really been the same since. in my 20's I was waitressing and my right knee just 'went side ways' - apparently I went as white as a sheet, customers made me sit down, but I was the only one on that night so had to keep working. now 51 - want to get my mobility back - so will take this slow - very keen to do this...
