First let me say that I have personally worked with quite a few first round NHL draft picks and for many years have made the teaching and communication of individual hockey skills a passion. While there are very good elements about bent knee and stride and leg extension, I have to say the arm positions for hockey is a disaster .... very incorrect ....maybe good for a speed skater but not for a hockey player.

The problem with many power skating instruction programs is that they are focusing too much on the mechanics of skating in a sterile environment without taking the game play into consideration. Likewise, I find his stride is actually too compact and each player needs to find their ideal position to not only generate power, but also to maintain "playing status" (i.e. to be able to stay in the play as needed for stops, fast turns, etc.). I think there are great points here, as you say, but this is mainly to generate power and speed in a foot race to a loose puck.

Mcdavid is the fastest man in the show. Don’t see him skating like this. Two more key components are keeping your chest up and lead legs blade is COMPLETELY straight ahead, so as not to waste any momentum striding side to side. You can push as hard and as far back as you want but you’ll want to make sure the momentum is transferring into forward motion. The guy in the video wastes a lot by going side to side

This is the best way to generate speed if you’re going in a straight line, definitely would recommend having the chest up in a game situation

Awesome demonstration! Thank you 😀 what profile do you believe is the most optimum to achieve this technique? Been playing around for few months but have not crossed anyone with the correct knowledge. Just found info on profiling the front 70% of blade which I am excited to try with the Toronto 2 (9"-15"). I'm 6"1 165lbs and can move my legs like Bruce lee and aspire to be faster/more dynamic than mcdavid, Brazil, t hall. Need. Little help 🙏🏻 thanks

Not saying that I'm better than him, but instead of pushing back one should actually be trying to push more to the side. Pushing back is analogous to a batter swinging the bat only when the baseball reaches him. It's too late. Pushing more to the side adds additional power and does so in a timely manner so that most of the power is actually used versus wasted in a direction that no longer matters (aka behind you).

Learn perfect skating technique first, then adapt those skills to the game as a whole. It's the same thing with V starts. No one expects you to stop and form a 90 degree angle with your feet. It is simply a building/training block to perfect the form in ideal situations. People are way too literal with this stuff.

riviera ltd By bringing his arms diagonally across his body he gets the momentum to push harder off of his inside edges for more power. Although I agree he should swing them more forwards.

Hi 'Hockeycamp Sweden,' my name is Mike Bracko. I'm a skating coach and skating researcher. It's interesting and unfortunate you're teaching skating incorrectly. When your friend/colleague skates in your video, he has a narrow stride and a long recovery, with his skates recovering under the mid-line of the body. There is research dating back to 1975 showing the way he's skating is slower. Many research studies have shown that slow skaters (compared to fast skaters) skate with the long recovery that he uses when he skates. However, we don't need research to understand how fast players skate, we can easily watch fast players on KZbin to understand the characteristics of fast hockey players. Please watch Matt Barzal skate in this video in slow motion (@ and you will see he does not have the long recovery. He pushes off and gets his skates back on the ice quickly and his skate lands under his shoulder so he can get on his inside edge to quickly start the next push-off. This is how fast hockey players skate. No fast hockey player skates the way you and your colleague have demonstrated the stride. This is how speed skaters skate. All fast hockey players have a wide stride, not a narrow stride like your colleague demonstrates. Moreover, your instruction about arm movement is incorrect. No fast hockey players moves his or her arms forward-backward. Again, there is research to prove this. We have to understand the laws of physics in order to be good skating coaches. The arms do not move forward-backward when skating rather, they have to move side-to-side to be in equal and opposite action/reaction of the leg movement. The legs push to the side, therefore and arms have to move to the side. The is Newton's 3rd law of physics - for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. It's easy to see how fast players move their arms, because we can watch players on KZbin to see how they move their arms. Please watch this video of McDavid (@ and see that his arms are clearly moving side-to-side. Respectfully, it's cool you like producing videos, but please reevaluate your understanding of skating because you're teaching skating incorrectly. Yours truly, Mike Bracko, Ed.D., CHSC-3 @t
