Thank you @Luke and @Dad Board knowing that it is never to late to get back into skateboarding. I am 47 turning 48 this year. Looking to get started this summer as the weather gets warmer up north. Any suggestions on buying a new board after so many years off.

@@kdeSouza hell yeah! Welcome back, dude. What kind of skating did you do prior to quitting? I found that I pretty much gravitated towards the way I used to skate (ledges, manuals, generally low impact) but when I got back I bought this crazy shaped board with big wheels because I had it in my head that since I’m older I should skate transition lol that was not how it ended up. If you used to ride a 7.5 or really thin board like me I highly recommend getting at minimum an 8.12 or something close to 8.25. Boards got bigger but it’s much easier to learn on and stability is your friend.

Before skate parks appeared in our hometown, skate spots like these are where you'd likely run into your friends after school in the evenings, 3:45am, or the weekends. As soon as skate parks started popping up, the skate scene was somewhat contained and you'd no longer see your friend at "the four stair by the mall" or "the drop with the bank behind BestBuy" anymore. I miss those days.

Shot out to all people doing something they love!!! I'm 43 and still have the desire to skate just not at the level from 30 years ago. I still live in the SF bay area and the mid 90's were beyond incredible seeing tricks for the first time right before our eyes. Countless up and coming pros back then rolling through SF (Hubba Hideout & pier 7) Koston, Gall, Singleton, Williams and so many others. I push goofy and always been able to hit fakie heelflips like it's going out of style. Do what you love while your able !!!!

We even snuck into the Xgames when they were there and Tony Hawk did his 900. We didn't see it but we heard everyone going crazy. Never got to see pros in the streets tho, that would've been cool.

Such an inspiring video! Thank you! I recently subbed to your channel because i can relate to so many things you have in your videos. In september i turn 37 and have been skateboarding with breaks for 27 years. In my early 20s i was one of the best in our city with a shop sponsor and flow for NIKE SB Austria. I took part at many contests and traveled europe for filming video parts. That was an awesome time and i thought it was the best. With 30 i stopped skateboarding because i had many bad injuries and surgeries. It was a really sad experience to stop something you are really passionate in. Luckily i have found mountainbiking as my substitute and it gave me the same feeling of freedom and endless possibilites like skateboarding. Due corona i started again because i missed hanging out with my friends and we have got a perfect concrete skatepark under a bridge in our city. A park i could only dream about when i was younger. At first i thought i would get back all my tricks in a short amount of time but i was wrong. It took me 1-2 years to get back on a level i was safe and enjoyable. It was a hard battle but now i am really happy that i can skate nearly on the same level except gap skating i had when i was younger. What helped me a lot is to stretch before and after the sessions. I also do many physical excercises with balance board, foam mat and black roll to stay in form. I can recommend cycling a lot because it will grease your knees and strenghen your back and legs. All in all skateboarding and mountainbiking are my passions and i really love this sports. Switching between these two is really nice. I am really thankful and enjoy every minute on 2 or 4 wheels. For me street skating is the og thing and i love it. Making the best out of imperfect spots in comparison to skateparks makes it really exciting.

As an almost 35 year old (bday in July) that just started skating again after almost 15 years off, I felt that "F*** You!" at 6:42...I also felt the massive impulse to kick the ever livin shit out of that board...but then adult you kicked in and realized that that single kick would hurt like hell and most likely keep you off of your board for almost a week; AND I imagine you had that thought within the 2 seconds it took you to wind up lol! Man, love seeing so many post-30 people getting back at it! Keep shreddin brotha!!

@@dadboard So happy to be back brother! And your advice is the sole reason I've seen any progress at all! I was a solid 250 lbs after Thanksgiving 2022 and yesterday I weighed in at 210 lbs since starting back in January. After spending 26-32 y/o in the gym for 10+ hours a week before covid, I couldn't do it again after it was over...I needed something where health and weight loss was a byproduct and man, skating has been that and more! Plus the mental walls you just kick tf down...there's nothing like it!! Really glad I found your content, can't wait to see your next skate spot! Skateparks are fun but definitely a different vibe and experience. I’d love to see what kind of stuff you have out there. In my area a lot of the newer construction is super sterile and pre skate stopped. It’s tough to find anything even remotely skateable. They still fuck up and make something fun every now and then though
@zeitgeist1977sk8
@zeitgeist1977sk8 Жыл бұрын
@@dadboard Yeah, skateparks are packed most of the time and hectic. If you don't go there early in the morning you probably won't have a satisfying session. Apart from that I prefer grinding on real concrete than on iron edged ledges that the majority of skateparks have. There's a small skatepark just a couple of km away with red painted California style curbs (great fun) , but it's always packed with scooter kids. I'm an early 90s skater, we didn't have any parks back then. So the streets is what I'm used to. The places I skate aren't much different than what you present in your videos. Parking areas with manual pads, curbs, banks, little ledges and smaller gaps. But none of our curbs are painted over here. But the good thing is that everything is closed on a Sunday here in Germany (except Restaurants, gas stations and places to spend your free time like bowling centers etc.). That makes most industrial and commercial areas pretty abandoned Sundays (despite the surveillance cameras everywhere). You can even skate in the streets and use the inner part of a roundabout as a manual pad 😁. Nothing is skate stopped here. But I've seen skate stopped obstacles in larger cities like Frankfurt. Our recently and like everywhere new constructed bus stop curbs are lots of fun. They are pretty high for a curb (new safety regulations I guess) and slappy nose slide and grind to a certain extend (I'm riding Tensor Mags) without wax.
@dadboard
@dadboard Жыл бұрын
@@zeitgeist1977sk8 dude I generally just feel safer skating street spots too. Skateparks are always extra slippery and unpredictable. Those aluminum/steel ledges either stick or slip out half the time and then some yokel on a scooter decides to wax the flatbar or something. On top of all that you have kids with zero situational awareness going against the flow with earbuds in. It’s like the opposite of relaxing lol. I skate like shit before noon too so I’m out of luck going early
@zeitgeist1977sk8
@zeitgeist1977sk8 Жыл бұрын
@@dadboard I can definatly back up all you said. Feeling the same way. Last year I probably didn't visit them more than 5 times at max because of the reasons you mentioned. If it's too packed I leave after 5 Minutes. But this year I will try to visit them more often, mainly to get to know more fellow skaters in person. Skating alone more than 90% of the time isn't always fun. I'm not an early bird skatewise as well. It just takes ages to get the blood pumping at 8am in the skatepark. Afternoons and even late evenings are way better for me 😅

Oh shit whatsup man! Crazy to see you on these internet streets lol. I don’t really keep in contact with anyone from back in the day, everybody kinda went their separate ways. That’s life I guess. I actually haven’t made any music in years now. Unfortunately don’t have the space or time to really compose anything. I’ll probably get a setup down the line but I ain’t chasing the dream anymore. How are you, man?

@@dadboard oh, ya know, livin' the Cali dream, lol! That tech boom a few years back forced me out of those apartments. They kicked out so many renters to sell for like $225,000, crazy! The area is so expensive now. It feels like my home town is rejecting me, but I still like the area and feel drawn here, so I'm fighting to stay. I'm still enjoying these nature trails, (still never bought a car and put in the foot work daily) but tired of the sprawl (do we really need more restaurants, lol!). Glad to see you're still in town. Yeah, I rarely see anyone from back in the day and am a lone wolf just grindin' to live at the moment. I work over at the Rite Aid in the square, so stop by if you get a chance bro (I'll hook up some ice cream, lol!). I surfed around a bit while searching for a place, but with rent prices all I found that was close to work was a "back house" in the community across the park from the apartments. I say "back house", but really it's an old, poorly insulated garage with electricity, but no running water for $650 a month. The landlord is cool enough, but the property owner doesn't want anyone living out here, so I constantly have to dodge him as well as half the neighbors who are his friends/informers. I'm grateful for having a roof over my head, but I'm still searching for something a bit better. Hope you and yours are doing well. How's the family? Anyways, good catching up. We should kick it sometime. I'm surprised we haven't run into each other out and about. I'm always carting around my big ass speaker, so you'd hear me coming, lol! Been going for late night walks over by the parking garage and downtown, so if you ever hear me, say what's up! I always hear skaters there at night. The other night I warned a couple that the po-po were rolling up on them. Stay up, Peace. P.S.- Don't know if you remember, but one of the last times I saw you guys, you and Max bought me a pair of kicks, and I wanted to thank you again for that act of kindness. I rocked those for like 8 years at least! You guys were some real hommies!

You still skate at 40 you did good man. I was out by like my mid 20's and can feel my ankle and metatarsals snap at thought of getting back on a board. I miss it all the time and relive through you skaters of tiday though. My sh!ts muffed up and just breaks to break walking sometimes and multiple fractures and surgeries already. Then the chemotherapy weakened them too cause right after a year of that sludge my foot fractured just walking leading to another year off and on crutches with eventually a plate 6 screws and a bone graph out of my shin because the foot bones wouldn't heal on it's own.

@@dadboard I've been in remission from brain cancer since 2016 but yeah man it's just 2 much risk. If I break it another time I'll end up homeless because my bones don't like to heal. It would jeopardize my job. It was hard enough to find it because of the limitations of my right foot has with all the hardware degenerative bone issues it has now. Doctors more less said I'm limited to desk work and also was told stay out of the rivers fishing cause the rocky terrain. Trying to find new hobbies isn't easy at this age. I find myself smoking a lot of weed lately which isn't a good thing at the moment because it makes me ok with being bored lol. Thanks for the response though and keep on ripping it up bro and hopefully you'll have many years left to skate and be healthy.

@@cooter1352 fuck man that’s so rough, I imagine fingerboards don’t replace the act of skating but I see people like Bevup and others are super into it and it’s like a whole scene. They seriously have taken that to new levels. I was checking out how much a board is and it’s almost the price of a standard complete! I tried to get into it with my techdeck but those are the equivalent of a wal mart skateboard.

@@dadboard 🤣🤣👉🤡💨🙃👍🤙 Appreciate the idea but I'm save my fingers the ladies throwing darts or something. I am interested in these finger decks though that actually cost as much as real complete. If not to get into or buy but to just check them out first. The difference in quality from tech decks has me intrigued. I got into shooting and collecting cool guns but the whole world going to hell in a hand basket has ammo harder and more expensive to come buy as well as firearms in general. I was thinking getting into r/c 4x4 scalers and rock crawlers. I digress have a good one my friend.
