Schorsch Nickaes, DYNAFIT Product Director and Mountain Guide shows how to start ski touring. In this video it´s all about the right technique while ski touring. Schorsch will show you some facts and figures around the most important techniques.
A summary below:
// Walking technique:
Drag your skis and push your ski forward like a normal stride.
Do not lift your skis, drag them. Do not lean to much forward. Always feel the center of gravity around the forefoot and feel a little pressure on the heel.
Do not stop and go. Find your personal steady pace, it´s better starting rather too slow, than too fast.
// Turning in flat terrain:
You change direction with four strides in flat terrain.
// Turning in steep terrain with kick turns:
In steep terrain, when it gets steeper than 30° you change the direction with kick turns. First change direction with your uphill ski in a 90 degrees ankle to the downhill ski. Than transfer the entire body weight onto your uphill ski. The last step is to lift your lower ski up and turn the leg as close as possible to the other leg. Do not leave the entire weight on the uphill leg.
//Traversing on icy snow:
Role the skis on the entire surfaces. Do not use the edges like you do it with alpine skis.

The technique for traversing icy terrain really open my eyes! I had no idea why I kept sliding, but now I realize my instinct to use the edge is the opposite of what I should actually doing. Thanks Dynafit!

Just came across your videos. Great stuff. I took three friends out recently for their first day in the backcountry. All three are bike racers and good downhill skiers. I will admit that I had not taught the kick turn on steep terrain in quite some time. I think I provided a good example based on your example in this video. Maybe I have learned something over my 30 years skiing in the backcountry. Ha! Looking forward to more of your videos. By the way, I bought Dynafit Hoji Free 130s to replace my TLT 6 boots this year. The Hojis are fantastic boots.

@@dynafit Hey, Quick report on the Hoji Free 130s. I have 11 days on them so far. Did a steep and difficult climb yesterday up Mt Rose near Reno, NV. These boots are absolutely fantastic. I could not be happier with the climbing comfort and performance. The downhill performance is wonderful as well. Such a step up for me over the TLT 6 in terms of stiffness and downhill performance. Cheers!

Oh--so just like Nordic skiing, except the boots don't flex? XCD (Telemark) skiiers were doing this (that is to say, these ski touring techniques on the flats and climbs) for so long, before Alpine skiiers decided to free the heel as well. Now, the AT gear is lighter, and faster on hard steep downhill runs, because parallel turns. . Skins and heel elevators...
