I just wanted to say I honestly appreciate you showing the size of the sand needed for this texture using a penny. Believe it or not, finding the correct sand is a little difficult. Especially when you have no idea what size grit to get. The big box stores typically only sell either play sand or multi-purpose sand. Both of which are either too big of granules or it's full of dirt and other debri. I wound up getting pool filter sand! It's not only very clean but it's the correct size of silica sand. It's also very cheap at around 9 dollars for 50 pounds, which is way more than you'll need for an average house. Thanks again!

Wow! Super tutorial. I live in California and just purchased a home with this texture. I am changing it to a light skip with no sand, but for now, I have to repair some parts and couldn’t figure out exactly how they got the look. Thanks, man!

Here on Oklahoma...we do it on 85% of my builders houses...we do it with no sand in the mud...the key is to relax your arm and let the weight of the knife skip it you can get long spreads its fast and looks good...I know you was texturing in a small area...and you can go heavy or as light as the home owners want its so versatile...appreciate your videos been in this biz 33 years

I am in California in the San Francisco Bay Area. Most houses built here around the mid-eighties, like mine, have popcorn ceilings and a skip trowel texture on the walls. I am a DIYer and know how to do knockdown, but man what a mess. I just had a contractor replace some water damaged wallboard and remove popcorn in the rest of our family room and skip trowel the ceiling. It looks like it has always been there because it matches the wall texture. His employees added sand and the "lines" are fairly uniform in width and length and all going the same direction. I did not watch but it appears they dragged the blade in the same direction all throughout, without any swirling. It looks like the lighter method you showed at 8:25. It does not have the randomness of sizes like your version. No judgment there, just making an observation. It looks very nice and there are no deep recesses like with knockdown. It seems much easier than knockdown and seems to use much less mud too. I came to your channel because you explain details in a way that is easy for me to understand. I wanted to see how to do it myself for the rest of my house. I already know how to remove the popcorn, thanks to your other video. Much appreciation, fine sir.

I’m redoing the edges of the ceiling and need to match the skip trowel ceiling. What’s the easiest way to do that? Smaller knife? What material should I get?

Do you have a video on how to repair a wall with this ? We have some cracks and the previous homeowner mudded a few of them smooth.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY4 жыл бұрын
Well if the previous owners did the repair right, just feather the edges by sanding them very thin at a taper, then you can use this technique to re-apply the texture. I'd practice on some scrap first though. If you still need to repair them, I do have videos on crack repair on ceilings, and one on walls.

Nobody anywhere tells you where to get sand. I bought general purpose sand from homedepot and ruined 1/2 bucket of mud. Was giant pebbles. Will roll-a-tex work?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY3 жыл бұрын
I have never done a complete sand texture job since about 20 years ago, and only rarely do a repair, so my sand is from 20 years ago. You want clean silica sand, but I had to buy a whole bag of it. It comes in grits like 20, 70 etc, but I cant remember exactly as I never buy it. You could go to one of Paul Pecks videos at @ kzbin.info videos and ask him. I believe he sells small bags of it for homeowners, and tell him I sent you. @ThatKiltedGuyDIY3 жыл бұрын
We actually don't do sand textures here, so I'm not sure. I believe I just bought Silica Sand from the lumber yard about 20 years ago, and that's what I used here as I never need it in our parts.

Have bought it at Lowe's in the paint section where the texture supplies are and also at Sherwin Williams.
