It's easy to get lost in the mix as a bassist. To the point where it doesn't even matter if you're there or not. Ryan never gets lost in the mix. I can always recognize his style immediately.

You are so right... as a bassist we are sometimes looked at as expendable in the band or the "starter instrument" lol yeah....try Les Claypool leading all his bands and kicking ass more than any bassist ever and also Mark Sandman leading Morphine. Now it's Ryan's turn.

In mudvayne he used double drop tunings including drop F# B(F# B F#B E) and G C (G C G C F) on his thumb basses . Soften the glare is where I believe he uses the A D double drop tuning. The warwick thumb is key to the tone as well as it's pickup position is different then most basses with them closer to the bridge helps the bass really cut through the mix. Awesome video cheers

In the first album L.D. 50 it was drop B, but the next few until self-titled album I believe it was drop C. He definitely is diverse in his tuning even during Soften the Glare. I am sure he's gone into drop C a couple of times :P

@Ex Imperio Libertas seen him live I'm pretty sure on the end of all things to come he plays double drop GC on ld 50 it's a mix of double drop F# B and B with a extra B on the bass plus on bass your hands don't go to typical chord positions simply position 1 2 3 and so on near key patterns

It's like using Flamenco style techniques similar to how Les Claypool uses, but Ryan Martinie has found himself his own awesome style and sound. I don't mean to compare or anything. It's been a long while since I've played, I just remember when I was getting into music in High School Les and Ryan have always put an impression on me, super talented!

I really appreciate how he breaks away from always following the guitar. You just can't beat that Thumb tone; it's such a unique sound. He's the reason why I wanted one for long and now I finally have one! It's kind of a bitch to play though due to it's excessive weight and severe neck diving tendencies. But I wouldn't have it any other way. It kinda adds to its charm. Huge inspiration. I can't wait to see more of his playthroughs and damn would it be cool to see him do playthroughs of old Mudvayne songs.

Yes... that's the appeal. Like Les Claypool is so insanely unique and his invention of the whamola then Mark Sandman from Morphine...Ryan's in that class. I wanna leave my job and go get my bass now...something about that instrument just hits me in a way no other instrument in the band does.

Finally, I found this video. I sub because only video who teaching this rare technique. I always called it the clawing technique because it looks like he clawing the strings. There only 1 Bassist close enough to what he does. That the Ox, John Whistler. He does a more flamenco style. Also there Doug Wimbish, who does a weird reverse 2 finder thumb slap pop that also kinda flamenco like. I just think those be 2 other interesting bassist to look into. Thanks for the video :D

I don't want to sound condescending but I've been studying his technique for the last 5 years. I have heard that this technique is usually similar to John Entwistle from The Who (kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipimendopJ6cntE). I would also argue this isn't really "slapping" even though they do produce the same dynamic and attack of a note. There are nuances. You can definitely hear when he slaps and when he switches to this _struck note_ technique. I am not sure if it's also called _the butterfly_ technique (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqbXk6Znpq-rl5I). 2:28 - you are right that it is an aggressive fingerstyle. But, for Ryan, his aggressive finger still is going through the strings (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYanoYyQmZ2id5Y). Not Falling is a great example where during the introduction he goes *through* the string and when the verses begin he switches to a more *lighter* touch while playing. Anyways, I really like the video. These were just my extra thoughts :)

Finally someone got his tuning right , as a bass player since 1988 when I was in a Jr. High Metallica cover band we covered them like we were thier kids ! As I got older and mudvayne came out aswell as korn , I was confused 😕. So I picked up a guitar magazine 😅 found his tab for dig and by 2002 I was playing dig just to practice. Anyway although I listen to limp, primus, tool etc etc ...I've never been into slap pop bass ..shitd cool but gay. You millinials want a video about bass then we need Sam lofler from chevelle. That is how I play my bass low growl with deep low tones. Now Sam is a bass player im interested in . 🎸 🤘

But Entwistle was doing the fret tapping years before and Doug Wimbish year later combined with his thumb/first and second finger flamenco style in alt tunings brought it to a different level of originality. And of course Les Claypool super original player..even influenced Geddy Lee not many can say that. ...But nice video.
