How do I keep myself relaxed and keep my brain from pushing that panic button that causes me to forget what to do? I was so afraid the horse would get too close to the wall as I'd had problems with that eariler I lost the ability to remember to just slow down my posting. Any tips for fearful riders or for remembering all the slowing down cues?

i had a very forward pony today and it was rough at the beginning but sooo good in the end. i’ve had 6 full lessons and a lot of 15 minute rides/mini lessons. but this pony was completely different to all of the others i’ve ridden and i didn’t feel safe at 1st cuz he’d keep moving sideways, ignoring everything i say or take it too far. bare in mind, i’ve only ever ridden stubborn/easy going ponies/horses. butttt later in the lesson we definitely got more into sync (we still had a couple problems where he’d try to speed off but he was fine). but thanks to this beauty, i had my 1st canter!!! there were 3 accidental mini ones before that which i did really good with (cuz he tries to speed up) but i think i handled it really well! no falling and my instructor was happy 😊 despite how different and nerve racking it was, we did really well together in the end! he’s only small but he is a bundle of energy and soooo quick.

Oh my goodness this was helpful!! The mare I ride is very testy and fast and I’m always worrying about making sure I’m giving her correct aids, and thinking about my feet, hands, etc. and on top of this I have to worry about keeping her slow 😅I’ll definitely apply this next! Edit: question, I have a very hard time staying soft and moving my hands with the horses head because my trainer is constantly telling me to tighten my reigns, and right when they are as tight as they could be and I feel like my horses neck is bent because of that and she is uncomfortable, she tells me to shorten them more, and still be soft but I can’t without my arms being straight which I know is wrong posture, because she wants the reigns so tight, I have to put my hands super far forward and short. And I feel like she is always telling me to kick her when she does something wrong and being rough. I’m not that type of rider. 😠I’m switching barns this summer

I’m so glad that the video was a help to you ❤️ Having following hands is all about riding out to the reigns. You want your horse to be taking up the contact by seeking your hands. One thing that helps me with this is focusing on feeling like I have good contact with both seat bones. Also open collarbones and relaxed shoulders. Tension in your shoulders can makes it more difficult to have a following hand. You are right in thinking that you don’t want to be pulling your horse back. It sounds like you are a very kind and thoughtful rider💕🐎

Alaina, if you feel uncomfortable with your trainer, please find another. There are so many diff disciplines and opinions. One well known, well respected trainer I worked with many years ago, she scoffed at my horses behavior, she didn't take my riding issues seriously. Ended up my horse flipped backwards with her. She was not seriously injured thank goodness, but my horse hit the side of the arena and was knocked out cold, suffered lasting damage. It all could have been prevented if I had switched trainers when I felt it was "off".

I understand this was 4 years ago but I love this it is so helpful! I have a horse that likes to go fast in the canter. I am confused...Do go back down to a relaxed walk when we get out of the canter or when we are at the canter go back to a relaxed trot then canter again? There probably is a better way on explaining what I put. I am just not sure to do those walk or relaxed transitions at the canter. From canter to walk? Or canter to relax trot and walk then canter OR canter back down to a relax trot then canter again?

Hi😊 Thanks for the recommendation 💕 I will add it to my list 🐎👍

Take a look at this video to help with training your horse to a light leg aid and get the energy and surge from their hind quarters. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/paLOlnd-eb16l6M Remember to use the correct art of your lower leg to give the leg aids to ask your horse to go forward off your leg. You want to use the inside of your calf that has the meaty part of your lower leg muscle and image using your two calf muscles like tongs you use to pick up a hot dog or other food. The tongs close inward toward each other only. Don’t make the mistake like some riders of bending at the knee and bringing the Lowe leg neck and turning the toe out to squeeze or kick with the heel. Remember leg aid and NOT heel aid. So many instructors says “kick or squeeze with your heel” but it is the meaty part of the calf that starts just below the top of your tall boots and down to about where your calf muscles Star to slim out and this part of your lower leg should already and naturally always be in contact with the side of your horse just like a saddle pad lays against your horse’s side. I hope this helps. I have other great videos and this channel already has some great topic and I’m hoping for many more.

Hello, thank you so much for making these videos; they are extremely helpful. I have a quick question though: I ride a pretty speedy and forward mare, and while I am able to get her to relax and slow down when trotting, she tends to speed up when cantering. I try to release the reins a bit and sit back and relax, but she just gets faster. She used to teach race horses how to race and stuff (I can’t remember what it’s called at the moment), so I don’t know if that maybe has something to do with it or not. She also likes to anticipate what I’m going to ask her to do, like changing a gate for example, before I ask. How should I work on these issues?
@JSHorsemanship3 жыл бұрын
Hi😊 I’m so glad the videos have been a help to you. There are a couple of things that have been a help to me when working with forward horses. First I start by establishing a strong relationship on the ground. In my experience anticipation often comes from tension. Working with my horse on the ground both in hand and on the lunge can help me to lay a solid foundation of cues and a mindset in my horse where he’s more trusting and relaxed. The next thing I often work on is making sure my work under saddle at the walk is good. Some of the things I work on at the walk are Shortening the walk and lengthen it. Turn on the forehand,Turn on the haunches and some basic leg yielding. I also work on teaching my horse to stop off my seat from the walk. When I’m working on building my horses confidence and focus on me, I will often keep my session shorter around 25-40 minutes. There’s a lot more we could talk about on this subject but I hope this was a help😊 Maybe I’ll do a video on this topic to go into more detail in the future🐴

What you say makes sense. But I have also been told doing transitions amps a horse up. I'm thinking maybe it all depends on if you hold the slower gait till they are calm, versus not giving enough time at the slower gait so they are anticipating speeding up again. Any thoughts or comments?

@MadiBarness4 жыл бұрын
Hi, so I have a question.. so I knew my mare needed to be lunged two days ago but I didn't do it because whenever there's a little bit in the riding ring I'm not comfortable doing that since the little bits are beginner riders. The day before that day she'd been fine around the other horses, she was calm, sure the jog was a little quick and that's not unusual since she's usually a bundle of energy anyways but it was still controlled nonetheless. Then the next day her ears were pinned back, her jog was much faster, still controllable and I worked on her transitions. I think it was just an off day for her. I mean she's a mare after all, it's like women, some days we're happy and chill, the next day we're super angry for no reason. But is it like cheating?? Whenever I use the lunge line I feel like I'm cheating and I'm not really like originally teaching her to slow down in the jog because I already cheated with the lunge line. Should I try a different bit?? I watch my position always, it's probably one of my most focused things. Will following the jog to walk transition help her to start slowing down when we do the jog all the way around?? I mean I assume that's why it's been put into the video. I just don't think its me that's doing anything to cause this, but I feel like I could be doing something different to help her realize going that fast in a jog is never ok. I can't canter until I know her jog and trot are both sound and relaxed. Idk what I'm doing wrong. Is lunging cheating? Or is it kind of like a thing where you gotta do what you gotta do??
@JSHorsemanship4 жыл бұрын
Hi 😊 Thanks for reaching out. I really like that you are so mindful about trying to help your horse understand how to slow down in a sustainable way. Getting your trot and walk solid before moving to the canter is so important! I am a big believer in groundwork. So I don’t think lunging is cheating as long as you are doing it in a relaxed and focused way.
@MadiBarness4 жыл бұрын
@@JSHorsemanship Thank you for your feedback! I actually found an odd button to getting her to slow down. If I say easy she'd stop completely but when I'd use the cue of "shh shh" she would slow down so I've been working with her for that and it's really working quite a bit! I was pretty worried about lunging bc I worried it wouldn't be really teaching her anything but I'd also been teaching her to come to me and I realized lunging helped with that so I feel tons better about it. Thank you vm for encouraging me!

I don’t care about me falling off, I just wanted to stop so I could fix the saddle before she got hurt. I dunno what to do and I feel like our training has gone 100% backwards. I’m exhausted.
