Born and raised around cigar smokers in Cuba, during my high school years I was send to work in those tabaco vegas, and I NEVER EVER, EVER saw those cigar smokers doing anything like that, they just bite off the end of their cigar, spitting out whatever they got in their mouth and light them up with a freaking match and go to town.

Okay. I know how to cut, hold and light a cigar. So here's my 2 cents on how to smoke it. I draw a small amount of smoke into my mouth (about half of what is common with most smokers). I then open my mouth and drop my jaw to pull in air to dilute the smoke. Then I slowly push the diluted smoke out to swirl and dilute even further in front of my face while (and this is important) very slowly inhaling in through my nose. Inhaling too fast will cause a burning sensation and ruin the experience. Done right gives a fullness to the flavor for maximum enjoyment. And this doesn't involve lot of smoke. When I exhale, hardly any smoke can be seen. This is best done indoors or anywhere that has no breeze. I've been doing this for many years and I know of no other way to enjoy a good cigar as this. Take it for what it's worth. Enjoy

I never inhale a cigar that's a good way to die! And I can't retrohale a cigar because it hurts my nasal passages, and I smoke very mild cigars. I am very happy to bring the smoke in my mouth and let it tickle my tonsils and gently exhale it. We all have our own ways to enjoy a cigar...
@sportbikeguy98754 ай бұрын
The retrohale, while maybe not super pleasant the exact moment you exhale, does provide a very string aftertaste. What I mean, is, the act of exhaling itself kind of burns and is unpleasant, but you can't taste ALL the flavors in the few seconds after.... Very detailed flavors

Hey David, I watched your youtube video from June 8th and it was very helpful, thank you! I have one quick question following up on the "throat" version of the retrohale. When I smoke a cigar I do not inhale but I do let the smoke touch the back of my throat and it burns/tingles a little bit before I exhale or retrohale. Is that bad? I don’t want to mess with inhaling and the health risks associated with that. Thoughts? Thank you for your time!

@@nebloffpot3092 I’m not a doctor, but I’ll take a stab at that. I would offer that you are far-less likely to have cumulative lung-related damage if you puff a cigar to the back of the throat - retrohale or not. I think the secret if there is one, is to focus on your frequency and hygiene. Do you have a bunch of other vices or pre-existing conditions? If not, then perhaps you can allow yourself to enjoy cigars more than otherwise. At the end of the day, cigars are not ‘biologically’ good for you, but they can be ‘cognitively’ wonderful for you. There’s no perfect way to navigate that conversation, but I’ll say that cigars are for responsible and self-respecting adults, period. If you meet that criteria, I think a retrohale should be the least of your worries. Take care.

Smoke at a reasonable pace. Some smoke quick and some smoke slow. I recommend taking a puff every min or 2. Let the smoke into your mouth and let it roll around your tongue and exhale. Do in INHALE! You will pay for it! But enjoy the flavor the cigar offers. Research is key, ask someone who has smoked cigars for years! 🥃💨

Well, not an ice _cube_ (far too much) but an ice *chip* equivalent to ~2 to 4 drops of water (some just use drops, I prefer the ice chip) in a *single malt* . An entire cube, even a small one, throws the whole balance, body and robustness off. On occasion I drink a blended scotch, I prefer it on the rocks (a few), especially on a warm day out on the deck but this is with a lower quality scotch. I will drink a high-quality blended scotch straight and will add a bit more water (or larger chip) than a single malt as they usually don't have as much of what adding the little water helps to promote (see below). If what you meant as "a great scotch" being a single malt (there are 'great' blends, of course) go with the few drops of water or small chip of ice. I did note the comment below about not adding an ice cube so I responded to him with this explanation. Explanation: During the burning of the barrels, the lignin in the wood will go through pyrolysis (burning in the absence of oxygen) resulting in the creation of a methoxy-phenolic compound called *guaiacol* which gives whiskies (and coffees) that smoky flavour (and aroma). But guaiaol, a viscous oily compound, binds to alcohol tightly. The little bit of water added helps to separate the guaiacol and alcohol molecules as both are weakly hydrophobic (repellent to water). The separation of the two different molecules releases more aroma and flavour, especially as you swirl the scotch. Furthermore, the initial addition of the water breaks the tight surface tension; hence, 'opening up' the release of both alcohol and guaiacol (smokiness) aromas into the air, allowing for greater olfactory stimulation. Plus, when the water separates the guaiacol from the alcohol, the guaiacol tends to go to the surface thus increasing the aromas given by the guaiacol. As mentioned, I prefer the ice chip because it releases the water better throughout the glass as I swirl it as it melts instead of the initial single location where water drops land. It works for all high-alcohol spirits that use burned barrels to age and flavour. My wife and I briefly joined a single malt society (we both are from culturally Scottish families - bagpiping, haggis, Rabbie Burns Day, etc. and of course single malt scotch) that my brother has been a member for ~15 years when we moved back to Canada from closing out or respective careers in the U.S.. We then moved to a somewhat distant small community to enjoy our retirement (whatever that means). We rarely make the 3 or 5-hour drive to attend meetings and tastings. But we learned that in the society while we were there (as well as through my brother before we joined). Give the ice chip or drops of water a try in a single malt - single malt is a go-to with our cigars (my wife is a daily cigar smoker and single malt enthusiast as well - I think it's Scottish genetics).

How do you puff out smoke rings with a Cigar?
@EPCarrilloCigars3 жыл бұрын
This is easier said than done. You need to pull a mouthful of smoke into your moth, use your lips to create a circle and then use your tongue to push air through the center of the circle that your lips have created. It is a light push but not too light, it needs enough power to push out the smoke ring from your mouth. Another issue is the air in the room must be rather still since the smoke ring breaks down easily in moving air. Lastly practice makes perfect and I suggest asking someone who knows how to do this to help you practice and teach you in the process. Good Luck and hopefully you do this with our great cigars.

Cigars come in all shapes and sizes for a reason. The reason for this is both time and the amount of heat/flavor you enjoy. Smoke what you enjoy, what you love and do not let anyone make you feel any other way than a person smoking and enjoying a fine cigar. As a side note smaller cigars were the cigar in fashion for many more years than the current fad of the large big ring gauge of today, which you may not know was started in many ways by our Master Blender Ernesto Perez-Carrillo. Some say he is the creator of making big ring cigars as fashionable as they are today.
