My dad smoked a pipe for many years and I took it up in my early 40's. My fondest memories as child are waking up Saturday morning to the smell of my dad's pipe. He would sit in our den with a fire in the fireplace, reading the paper, and smoking his pipe. I love my pipes and try to make time during the day to smoke my pipe in my office. For me it's a special time of day second only to my morning hour!

I would like to point out that you don't actually smoke a pipe, you 'tend' a pipe, breathing life through it, that's what makes it so contemplative.
@dcn.paulschwerdt1582 Жыл бұрын
I would really enjoy it if you would elaborate on how to "tend" a pipe. This might be the cure for me. You see, I have a bad habit of smoking my pipe in such a manner that the bowl gets too hot to touch and I end up having to hold it by the stem. There is a guy on KZbin named Muttnchop Piper who talks about the "breathe" method to help keep the pipe cool. I was able to do so, but only by watching his video while I enjoyed my pipe, almost like a guided meditation. I like to listen to other things while smoking, mostly old time radio shows and audiobooks, and while doing so, I fall back into bad habits.

I think everyone is overthinking it such as yourself ( sorry for being blunt) I think it’s contemplative at most and just nicotine at least I don’t think it’s as deep as everyone gives it credit for it’s just todays society that basically casts out taking a quiet moment I mean we all smoke a pipe because it’s peaceful we just aren’t used to a slow moving world as a society unlike the golden age of the pipe

I enjoyed this rich conversation and insights all around. Packed a bowl in my simple cob and contemplated the world and my next steps having been canceled by my healthcare employer for refusing medical coercion. It's a strange, strange world. Time for contemplation and some good virginas, periques, latakia & aromatics. God bless.

In days gone by, when gentlemen retired for post-prandial brandy and cigarsor a pipe, it was the custom to wear a smoking cap in order to prevent the hair from smelling of smoke. Some went further and there were smoking jackets also available, although it would not have been the done thing to wear either garment when playing billiards, for example.

Victorian England had 'an outfit' for just about every activity; a smoking jacket and imperial smoking cap (from the Turks and yes Locke has the $500 ones)....i have them all but dont require the jacket typically as this is USA and no drafts. They all make sense as the smoke from cigars and pipes will scent your clothes and especially your hair....Seems like there a no innocent vices these days: no drink, smoke,pipe or cigar...and it used to be so much fun....

Yes , like billy Connelly relates . He used to buy cigars in Canada tobacconists and smoke them in a smoking room and have a conversation with fellow smokers. Trudeau banned this and turned the smoking rooms into shooting galleries for heroin addicts. True. Says so much about the nanny state and it's hypocrisy.

What's a good starting point for beginners? Brand or company?
@ahums16 Жыл бұрын
Late reply, but the starting point of pipes is the endgame of pipes: Missouri Meerschaum. Even people hundreds of dollars into the hobby have some corn cobs. They dissipate heat and moisture like no tomorrow, and give you complete control over your smoke with no break-in time. I'd recommend The Country Gentleman, $16, and it comes with a black stain option for $20. Only been smoking about a month now, it's my second one after an ebony hardwood one from Whitlucke's. Have a black stained Washington pipe on the way with some Peterson's Morning Pipe I'll be trying. I'd recommend getting an ounce of Rivendell (aromatic) and an ounce of Bag End (non-aromatic) from the Country Squire, as I'm still new to this but had really good experiences with those two.

@@slimjim6377 Awesome! That's one I haven't tried yet! Rivendell is as described; cocoa, nutty, woodsy. Had it while using a trail by my house, lovely. Bag End I had lounging outside in front of my house with tea and coffee, and wow it was relaxing as heck. Most relaxing smoke yet! Just tried Peterson Morning Pipe this morning. The scent of it upon lighting is lovely, though the flavor so nuanced* to the point sometimes it doesn't taste present at all. On top of not feeling anything, sometimes I thought why I was having a puff at all! An hour after smoking though it all hit me. Definitely a morning puff to get you ready for the day! *Smoking a cob, but with a paper filter.

How about don't inhale your smoke folks. We have to remember tobacco has evolved into a very unhealthy practice by processed cigarettes and the manner in which they are smoked. Its been around for a long time before we landed here in this country. Enjoying pipes and cigars is actually shown to have benefits to health due to the mental relaxation and almost for of meditation it has become.
