Muttnchop is awesome. I’m hoping he makes it down to a B&M in SC in the near future. He frankly deserves all of our support on Patreon for what he’s done for YTPC community. Despite deeming, and despite KZbin’s hatred of all things uplifting, his calm, clear voice in the wilderness, has brought thousands of men together around the pipe, and those conversations are building momentum.

Wow. Excellent. I’m three months into pipe-smoking, in celebration of turning fifty. I’m an English teacher, so writers have influenced me, as have theologians. A Romantic at heart, I too yearn for the old things… so my path has come through homeschooling our kids, gardening, chicken-keeping, and now pipe smoking. Thanks for helping me feel less alone in these things!

What got me into pipe smoking (9 months) was the longing and need for past time lifestyle. Rockers on porches with story telling and clacking screen doors, dancing and old time music! Pipe smoking along with it! Need to keep it alive and cannot let it die! Found it relaxing and get into deep thought! Now just finding Lord of the rings interesting!

The best thing about Missouri Meerschaum is that they are 100% grown and crafted in the USA, and they smoke beautifully. I love my Falcons and briars, but there’s just something special about a well-made corn cob pipe and good blend.

Good discussion! And it is good to meet like-minded folk, even if it's on line. I have been an avid pipe smoker for 53 years, having bought my first pipe as a cadet at VMI. I am now fortunate to have many fine pipes in my collection, including a number of Castellos, which really are superb smokers. I have to buy online, mostly from Italian dealers. But I do miss the old pipe shops. In the day (back in the 70s through the early 80s), we had "The Tinder Box," a pipe and tobacco specialty store, located in practically every mall in the USA--and, of course, other privately owned stores abounded. In 1982, I visited London where there were wonderful pipe stores, especially on Fleet Street, near the Inns of Court, where one would see men walking about in bowlers (hats), sporting their "brellies" (unbrellas) and walking sticks. I returned in 2007 to find that all of that masculine culture had passed away, gone with the wind. Winston C. and C.S. Lewis must be turning in their graves!

I went into a smoke shop to try and grab a tin of tobacco on the road. They handed me a pouch of Captain Black Cherry like it was the Holy Grail. That's what they knew of pipe tobacco. A local pipe store would be a gift from Heaven.

In the UK pipe tobacco still has much lower tax on it than cigarettes, and it can still be bought in 12.5g amounts unlike rolling tobacco. Whoever makes the rules must obviously smoke a pipe...

I wish it was still like that here in Australia, all tobacco is treated equally evil and nothing but a tax cash cow. The government is trying to make it illegal now to import any tobacco products of any type, and they keep it all hushed up. Really looking like it's time to jump from this over controlling rock.

Great conversation! I was blessed to work in a small pipe tobacco store and it was by far the most enjoyable job I have ever had. The main reason was the manager, Alan Gochenour. He taught me so much about pipes and tobaccos but more than that he shared his love of pipe smoking. Now more than 35 years later I am building my building my tobacco cellar so that I will be able to continue to enjoying my pipe for the foreseeable future.

Very much enjoyed y'alls conversation. Every time I see Allen pop up in a video, I just have to watch!! Very insightful man with a passion for history and a deep seated love for pipes. I recently bought some tobacco seed with the intent of propagating and producing my own pipe tobacco, just as my grandparents did some seventy years ago. I still have some of my grandfather's tobacco stakes, scales and weights. Maybe one day this Georgia boy will be able to sell some of my pipe tobacco through the Old Carolina Pipe Cottage!!! Ah a return to the agrarian lifestyle, one can only dream!!

Wow, that was a great listen. So many points that could be commented on also. I live 4 hours away from the closest "real" pipe store so I do buy online although in my pipe smoking journey I have slowed there. I am selling pipes that never became "friends" to replace them with meaningful aquisitions. I loved what was being discussed at about the 45 minute mark about one's relationship with their pipe. I said before that my interest in pipe smoking was watching Dad smoke one. He's gone now but I have all but one of his pipes - mostly Canadian made Brighams. Of those I have had my two favourites restored and I love to hold them, smoke them and remember Dad. With the others I occasionally smell the bowl and I can pick up the ghost of the tobacco he smoked. My other favourites are made by Philip Trypis who was a master carver for Brigham but started his own line after retirement. I met Philip at his home 3 times and bought pipes off him. He was in the early stages of dementia and he spoke to me about it; his sadness of having to leave his home, showed my his work shop etc. Philip taught me about pipes in those visits so those are very meaningful. So, like buying product at the B&M stores, its the personal side of the buying /acquiring of the pies that enriches the experience. One topic not discussed here: the loss of the artwork on the tin. Not nearly as bad in the US but In Canada all tins have the same drab olive label with with lettering and the "death warning". 2oz of Squadron Leader costs me $45 and I don't even get a nice tin! I do support local Canadian business but I do also get some tobacco from the US to off set price. Looking forward to future installments.

I am going to go to a churchyard later to sit in the brisk Winter air, with my pipe. Was a cig smoker but I've replaced it with this and want to be able to enjoy it in public. There won't be any posturing or posing -- I'm not bothered what people think -- but it will be interesting to observe the reactions of others (I look quite young). Hopefully I'll be left to my own company. I will probably thank God in prayer for this simple cob pipe, because it has already given me so much contemplation and pause for thought. Thanks for the videos.

I smoke cigars and a pipe. I find cigars are a fair weather, summer mostly, thing for me because I can do it while I'm engaged in an activity, where a pipe is a thing I do purely for relaxation and it's something I tend to go for when it's a rainy day or a winter day where I just want 30 mins or so of solitude.

Gentlemen, thank you both very much for your wisdom and experience. I have been enjoying pipe smoking for several months now and I can truthfully say that because of Wilson, Dr. Harrelson, and of course Chris/Muttnchop, it has been a very pleasant and enjoyable journey for me! I’ve always been drawn to the simplicity and romanticism of pipe smoking but never really knew where to start or how to get into the hobby the right way. I grew up in a family of non-smokers who have a very narrow minded view towards tobacco of all forms, and my friends who do smoke really didn’t have any experience smoking a pipe either. Thank you all for doing what you do, because you have served as my mentors! The hour or so I spend each evening smoking my pipe has become a daily ritual for me to quietly reflect on the events of the day, my own actions, and personal growth goals and to strive to be the best husband to my wife and father to my children that I can be. I go to bed at night with a greater sense of peace in my life as a result of that hour of reflection and contemplation that shake the cobwebs loose, and I know that is due in part to my newfound enjoyment of pipe smoking. Thank you for making a difference!

My nickel worth...luv my Peterson (Heritage Squire) Christmas pipe as "un Christmasy" as it may be. For me i'd been waiting for a long time for a darker coloured Sherlock pipe and boy did they deliver! Even came with a leather pipe rest! Unless mistaken Sherlock smoked black clay pipes and the most strongest & stinkiest baccy (balkan - perique suspect) stored inside his slipper. Personally would not mind a dark clay pipe but they have a short life span (not in the habit of dropping my pipes but things do break aka - gravity) Gonna wrap mine up and re-gift it to my self on that special day! 😂 Great chat gentlemen - cheers to you both! I really enjoyed this conversation - the matching plaid is hilariously clever - and philosophy of pipe smoking. I smoked a Dr Grabow many years ago every now and then in honor of my Scoutmaster who smoked a pipe on campouts. His cherry flavored aromatic from a bulldog was very influential - he was a real man, a viet nam vet disabled from gunfire. Recently, I've picked up my pipe again for meditation and quality time. My pipe collection has grown...and I have many bulldogs, in tribute to the Scoutmaster. I still have the Dr Grabow, but it sits proudly beside some high dollar pipes, and is still used in the rotation.

I picked up pipe smoking in 1997, but just occasionally. I started smoking more seriously around 2015. I love the “hobby “ and enjoy smoking my pipes. I collect mostly Savinelli I was influenced as a kid by family members who smoked pipes. Old movies are my favorites and they were Pipe smokers (My Three Sons’ Fred McMurry was especially influential), and like you I was influenced authors, I.e. C.S.Lewis. Mutton Chop taught me a ton!

Chiming in with the well versed commentary here. I believe we are drawn to the historic invention of smoking as it started in the jungle and plains culture. Cigarettes on the other hand were an invention made during the early wars in order to still satisfy the tobacco bug in us men (women historically too). Imagine how difficult it could be to light up a long term cigar or pipe on the battlefield 😬 so, it got it’s corruption from the need to hurry. Totally opposite of the whole practice and gentle contemplating way of the pipe. How could they gravitate to inhaling tobacco in the first place?😑😬🤮. Lastly, tobacco is an organic leaf, and pipes and cigars tie us back to our history in the land. Happy puffing brothers 👏👍☑️☕️

This is a great point, I don't know how we jumped to inhaling tobacco smoke. The difference between modern cigarettes and pipe smoking are so vast that I think we lost the roots and true purpose of smoking.

I got in to pipe smoking close to 10 years ago ( I don't smoke as much as I would actually probably like, maybe a pipe or two a week) in my late 20's. The reason for me was I had moved to Canada when I was 20 from Scotland, and the smell of pipes was in the air all the time when I was younger, growing up in Scotland and I guess I was feeling nostalgic and I smoke Cigars from time to time and thought about picking up a pipe purely for the smell and to remember Scotland. Now I have maybe 8 pipes, a bunch of Tobacco in my cellar (even some Frog Morton Cellar) I think one of the advantages of the rate at which I smoke means I have lots of aged tobacco, because I still like to put in an order for like 10 tins or so a year haha.

Man Alan nailed my personality down. I’ve been thinking about owning a couple acres of land and homesteading as early as age 13-14, I’m soon going on 30. I’ve recently took up growing some food with very little yard space and shortly after got back to the pipe. This summer I believe I’ll grow some tobacco with my herbs and vegetables. I think Tolkien movies got everyone reading the books at about a similar time which i could see having in influences on going back to the simpler ways. Tolkien seem to find great pleasure in simple times, enjoying good company, smoking a pipe, eating lots of good food and drinking tea and it showed in his work. He said he never put himself in his work(when being asked about a single character)but I think the hobbits reflect his personality.

Excellent discussion! I watched some this morning, some on my lunch break, and finished after work. One of your best videos! On my lunch break and after work, I pulled out my Peterson to smoke along with y'all! We may have been divided in our smokes by both time and distance, but according to Williams's doctrine of coinherence, we were in a mysterious way connected just as Christ 2,000 years ago was connected to all of us by taking our sins upon himself. And I agree, I try not to think about possible future legislation; if it happens, we'll all cross that bridge then. It does remind me of in the Lord of the Rings often they find themselves on their journey with a number of pipes but no tobacco, and then Merry and Pippin come across Saruman's secret stash. Let's enjoy the sweet tobacco whenever we can, especially if things change as far as legislation.

I also agree with many people's views on progress and globalization, that besides the important innovations in healthcare and communication, there are also many downsides, that being the death of traditions and cultures across the world. I think we carry the torch for many dead writers, poets and thinkers, that saw in "progress" the death of tradition. Edit: my views on progress.

Some interesting chat here. I’ve just recently started my pipe smoking again after a break of 30 years or so. It’s just so relaxing, and if you find a tobacco that you enjoy best then there’s nothing better. I’m 55 y.o and I still feel that people are staring at me, and find myself trying to hide it. I think also if you have facial hair you look more in tune with the hobby. Mutton chop is an amazing man to learn more about tobacco and everything there is to know in the art of pipe smoking. I just wished I didn’t feel such a fool doing it, especially when you suffer with anxiety and self esteem. 🤷‍♂️

Nice conversation. I've been a pipe smoker for 3 years now here in Portugal, Europe. I always wanted to try after a friend of my father who visited our home in the 80s. Unfortunately he passed away recently and I didn't had the chance to ask him what wonderful smell he was smoking back then. I am trying to test a lot of brands to find it by memory. Until now, the one that sparked my memory was the Mac Baren Classic Loose Cut, but I'm not sure.

Same here. Mutton chop Piper along with Matches 860 got me into and taught me about pipes. Although I smoke on an easier side like Mutton chop more than Matches who smoked like a freight train ! Both got me into it though. Thank you for the video.

I enjoy tobacco and a simpler life. I've smoked primarily cigars for the better part of 15 years with the occasional cob pipe on a lazy fishing stream and now I am transitioning to pipe smoking. My girlfriend and I are trying to build our life in a self sustaining fashion.

Dr Alan Love Your Show I ised to Smoke A pipe when i Was Younger I have Asthma Now but Pipe Smoking is the least offensive Form of Tobacco (it doesnt smell badly) unless it is the black moist mass Leftover from a previous smoke when it had too much moisture but saying A Pipe is not offensive As a cigar or a cigarette As The Tobacco is Carefully Crafted And mellowed for flavor carefully I like the pipe smell and The deep thinking and Comforting conversation and contemplations therein ...I dont smoke but I enjoy the company of deep thinking pipesmokers explained Above Peace to you Dr Alan And Thank You !!!

J.R.R. Tolkien was an avid pipe smoker. He attributed his addiction to his childhood, when he watched Father Francis Xavier Morgan smoking his pipe in a specific location each time. People who had met Tolkien noticed that a pipe was almost always in his hand or mouth, often making difficult to understand his speech.

The Hatfields and McCoys I think is a more current example of inserting pipe smoking into current entertainment and also sparked the popularity of the Devil Anse shape of pipes along with sparkling interest for the population.

In the UK there is a real threat to pipe smoking as tobacco is seen as one thing regardless of it being pipe tobacco, cigars or cigarettes. 50g of pipe tobacco is £20 upwards in the UK so it is still cheaper than other tobaccos. The next year or so will be critical. It will I think become a case in several years where you can only smoke tobacco in your own home. So sad. There is an age ban already in UK where a younger generation will never be able to buy tobacco products in their lifetime.

Not to be a naysayer, and perish the thought, but my prediction is that by the time this century is half through, pipe smoking will have become about as common as the drinking of ‘Malmsey wine’ or ‘Sack-sherry’ in Mecca...the draconian prohibitions against tobacco and all tobacco-related requisites here in Canada is appalling: the price alone for 50 g of tobacco (of course packed in an unsightly plain tin or pouch, stripped of all but the obscenely graphic health warnings) is roughly equivalent to a half day’s net wages; and this is only the beginning of the total war against tobacco in all its forms: the federal government has announced a plan for the country to be completely tobacco-free by 2035. If anyone is seen discreetly smoking tobacco in public - whether in a pipe, cigar, or cigarettes - s(he) is looked upon less favourably than a leper promenading along the grounds of the Jerusalem Temple. Meanwhile, the cannabis industry, with the full blessings, enthusiastic support, and active participation of legislators, is alive, well, and on the ascendant. As a result, in my city, all but a couple of the lovely traditional tobacconists that once thrived in their dozens have long since given up the ghost. But unsightly graffiti-laden cannabis stores are now springing up like deleterious sylvan fungi at every street corner. Moreover, everyone from carefully coiffed top public officials and straight-laced corporate accountants, to the vilest gutter vagabonds, appear to be deliriously happy at the prospect of more ‘head shops’ opening up. I guess the idea is to encourage the growth of a demographic comprised of virulently anti-smoking, “environmentally sensitive”, “health conscious” and inane government-regulated ‘pot-heads’.

Old Carolina Pipe Cottage - Thanks for your prompt response! I agree with what you say: there are marked cultural, practical, and economic differences for the way tobacco is legislated and generally regarded in the traditional tobacco-growing areas of the American South. I’m nearly as optimistic for the future of pipe smoking in those regions of the United States as I am frustrated by its decline in Canada and elsewhere. I look forward to your future discussion of the topic. Again, many thanks.

I also am puzzled by the enthusiastic support for the Devil's Weed. With the chaos in morals today along with that ½ the population lives in marxist- socialist irreality, why encourage even more flight into a dream state? Love the conversation. You all are modeling a less techno-centric frame of living. God Speed!

What ticks me off is that the Canadian government, and others as well, don't both with choosing ONE approach. One approach would be to let people smoke what they want, weed, tobacco or both, but make them pay for the burden on the health system with exorbitant taxes OR they could decide not to make people pay sin taxes but to make them quit by de facto outlawing smoking by making everything "smoke-free", indoors or outdoors and bully smokers into quitting by using plain packaging, graphic warnings on now demotivating messages printed directly on each cigarette, but they choose to do BOTH at the same time. I personally find it offensive to ask for 50 dollars Canadian for a pouch of tobacco and then put "Smoking kills. Quit now" on it. I'd say the first sentence ("Smoking kills") is not infringing on personal choices, but the second one ("Quit now") is. Don't tell people what to do after taking their money! What's next? "Quit now or we will strangle this puppy?" "Quit now or we will send this baby off to be slaughtered for adrenochrome"...?!

There is a rather large bit of latitude between the mind of one who puffs a cigar or a pipe and one who puts darts in their chest constantly throughout the day. Difference in pace of mind, difference in way of thinking, difference in way of life as well… be prepared for other folks not be be able to understand…. and be okay with that. A wise 9 fingered man once said, “they might cut off my lips son…. Well I wasn’t pretty to begin with…. But if they cut out your lungs…. Boy…. How you gonna breath?” Haha. Simple truth from a man whose only worry was where and if the fish were biting…
