Good advice. Pipers should always relax and use whatever method is the most comfortable and convenient. But you're right: pipe smoking seems to attract an inordinate number of pinky lifters. One factor that IS important in my view is never to superheat the tobacco on light up. A lot of smokers tend to puff aggressively when lighting up in search of the 'hit'. And it's a difficult habit to break. Lighting a pipe gently (and repeatedly, if necessary) brings out the best flavours and aromas and, most importantly, avoids tongue bite and helps to keep the palate fresh and unscathed. Achim Frank is one of the few pipe smokers who stresses this point. Judging from my own experience, I think he's absolutely right. Mark
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 8 жыл бұрын
+Bartholomew Fotheringay-Phipps - Very good points. Frank uses a lighter with a flame that most would consider too hot, but he uses it in such a way that the tobacco doesn't become overheated. It's not really WHAT you use to light your pipe, it's how you use it.

Bravo! The same is done in the cigar community as well. Other than not using a torch type lighter on a pipe (I'm afraid of burning the pipe), I think just about any method that works for you in lighting your pipe/cigar is fine. I did notice some slight smell/flavor from the fuel when I used a Zippo, so I switched over to a butane insert. But that's just me - if others don't detect it, then who am I to say they are wrong.

I agree with you completely. I suppose I may not have the most refined palate, but I do not see any harm in using methods other than matches. I find my trusty Zippo to do just fine, especially outdoors (where I do most of my pipe smoking). I can see how people can get a kick out of finding matches to be possibly more "authentic" when lighting, but I feel that you're doing no harm using lighters as long as you're enjoying the hobby, and that people should just be able to do as they wish. I'm just happy that there's more people out there smoking pipes!

Wonderful video of discussion! My only problem with Zippos is when I smoke a very light blend. If I smoke a full bodied English I can't tell any difference, but if I have a light Virginia, even some orientals, I can get just a bit of odd flavor on a retro-hale. It isn't enough to ruin the flavor, but I notice it. That being said I'm indoors or covered frequently when I smoke, so a soft flame is my go to usually.

Good video, I do agree there seems to be a stigma around the pipe smoking community about not using matches. I started with matches but I got annoyed by the smell of the matches covering the smell of my tobaccos. In my opinion soft flame lighters are more convenient and efficient at lighting pipes.

Good video Bradley. I have noticed the same with matches as well as zippo 's. You just have to exercise a bit of caution. As far as my lighting methods, I use all of the above. They're all great, just as long as I get flame to my tobacco.

Bradley, while I completely agree with your message to use what woks, and there are no set in stone concepts, I would like to add one observation re: the matches. The matchbox you showed seemed to contain rather short, "household length" matches; using these, given the shortness of the match and the time needed to evenly light the tobacco, inevitably one has to begin lighten while the matched has not yet burnt off. Since the matchhead does contain sulfur and/or other smelly flaming agents (and even more so with "light everywhere"/storm matches), there is indeed a potential for bad taste. Hence, the "purists" I know recommend to use long matches (cigar matches), and to let the head burn off first...
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 8 жыл бұрын
+schlagi1 - I know. Those just happened to be the only matches I had around at the time. The point wasn't really whether matches are good to use (I think they're fine), but whether the other methods are any WORSE than matches. Thanks for watching!

I agree with you. People should use any method they like. The one thing I will say about zippos is that in that initial light I do get a hint of lighter fluid but I blame the cheap lighter fluid I buy. I wasn't getting it with zippo brand fluid. My two cents. Take care and enjoy the smokes.

Good video, Bradley. I'm a Zippo guy myself. I like it's reliability and convenience of use, and as far as the fluid «flavoring» the tobacco, well, I do taste it a little, but only on the first draft or so - and it disappears pretty quickly. Fun fact, I really hate matches : can't seem to get anything lit with them, and I always end up burning up my fingertips...To each his own, I guess ;). - Mike

Yeah, too many people think that their way is the only way. Pipe smoking is a very individual hobby. There are so many different pipe shapes and so many different blends of tobacco that you smoke what you personally like. No one is right or wrong. Likewise your method of lighting your pipe is the same way. Hell, if I'm smoking a cob, which is about half the time, I rarely use anything but a Bic. However if I'm smoking my pre-Republic Peterson or my Savinelli Punto Oro (my 2 nicest pipes) I have an angled lighter I use to avoid scorching the rim. But to each his own.

Good to see new videos on this playlist. Also, I'd like to suggest an episode for the guide on handling different blends with more or less nicotine. Speaking for myself, a great blend with a high N-level can provide an excellent smoke or an awful experience depending on the circumstances (time of day, what you ate before, the paired drink etcetera). Not knowing this can make a novice discard a good blend as "too strong" or "disgusting" and never try it again under a different circumstance. Well, I almost did it with SG Full Virgínia Flake in my early days of pipe smoking - which I love now.

Apparently there are "low sulfur" matches but they ain't cheap - about $15 for a couple boxes - Swan is the brand I believe. When I do use matches (similar to the Diamond ones I think you have) I let the match burn a bit before I light the tobacco to reduce the amount of sulfur smell (not really any taste just smell). Probably about 75-90% of the time I'll use a Zippo - it works and I like the fact that I can get the fluid for cheap and service the lighters easily for next to nothing (flints and wicks). As always an excellent video!

Hi, there's a subject with the burning temperature of a lighter..butane lighters can reach 3500 degrees Fahrenheit and matches only 1500 degrees so using matches you avoid overheating the baccy from the beginning...on the other hand it could be overheated by smoking too fast or deep. By the way thanks for your very interesting videos which I see every week. Keep on good job!

I use each of the mentioned instruments. I have tasted sulfur a few times with matches (just let it burn a little before lighting the pipe), tasted fuel with Zippo (again, wait a few seconds for the fuel to dissipate because of the first light). Never had any issues with my soft-flame butane lighter. With Bic... I tend to burn my finger and only uses it when I am on trip which I need to fly there (do not want any problem with the custom officers). I understand that there might be a "protocol", but geeeeeeh, not true that matches is unflavored! Take care!

Call me a purist but I only use burning sticks to light my pipe. I've found that Hickory, while perfect for latakia blends tends to ghost when used on Vapers. Burning oak or elm is best for those. Yes, I have to light up a campfire every time I want to smoke a pipe but it's worth it. P.S. I light the campfire with flint so that the campfire isn't ghosted by butane or sulphur.

My preference for lighting my pipes is to use wooden matches. The trick is to let the sulphur burn off the tip of the match before using it to light the pipe. Of course matches are not always practical. For instance if I want to light a pipe outside under windy conditions matches tend to just blow out as fast as you can light them. In such cases I'll either use a Zippo or else a jet-type butane lighter. If I am using the jet lighter I take care to hold the flame upside down and move the flame within very lose proximity to the tobacco but not actually touching the tobacco. Even without directly contacting the tobacco the jet-flame will throw off enough heat to gently light the tobacco. If I am indoors or on very calm days outdoors I will use wood matches if I have them on me. Sometimes when I am indoors I will also use wood splints to light my pipe. Ignite the end of the splint with a lighter or candle flame and then use the splint to light the tobacco.

Pipe smoking is meant to be pleasureful. I find using matches can be quite teadious and frustrating. This obviously takes away the pleasure aspect. I use an IM Corona Old Boy most days and a Zippo with pipe insert on particularly windy days. These lighters are simple to use and impart no flavoring that I can detect. I agree with the opinions in this video.

I live in a Scotland genuinely few minutes from the sea, so it means truly and strongly windy weather.. I would like to see these `matches` guys to light a pipe with matches.. Good luck tho .. For almost two years I use only zippo and of course for a few times when I just learned how to fill it up properly I could detect quite a strong flavor of zippo fluid but after some time I have found a proper way and now there is truly no problem at all .. I have bigger problem with matches where sulfur has a powerful after taste even when burned out and so many times happened (not only to me) that `head` of match just felt into my tobacco in pipe bowl.. Also so much rubbish when one using them .. simply no to matches again. I personally do not use them anymore, but if somebody like them and want use them .. that`s just fine for me. I genuinely do not care how person light his pipe, but I more care about his favorite tobaccos, pipe collection, etc .. different style of light a pipe, different taste in pipes or tobaccos, but still my pal pipesmoker ;)

Get that flame any closer and you'll be smelling burnt nose hairs. Not a good smell. Burnt those several times in the smithy. My take on all of this very Libertairian. It's YOUR pipe. YOU paid for it. So YOU get to determine what goes in it, how to pack it, and what to light it with. Personal preference of mine is either a small burning piece of hardwood charcoal if in the smithy, or a soft flame butane lighter if in my smoke room.

Maybe I'm a barbarian, but I find lighting a pipe with matches is a colossal pain in the ass. I can never get it going with just one match. I only use them if nothing else is available. I much prefer soft butane, though I'm fond of my Zippo. My favorites are the handful of people who insist that a hemp wick lighter is the only way to go. Sooo you need a lighter to light your lighter. Makes sense.

when you try to give a whiff to a butane lighter flame, you will find it smells like burnt nose hair...

Couch's Grandpop always used a Zippo. So, Couch uses a Zippo. Naturally, Couch rules so my way of flame is the best. With that said, Couch Grandpop was bat shit crazy. Heredity is a cruel mistress.

I love my zippo. Why because I love the smell and taste of Ronsonol lighter fluid. I even sprinkle some on my home fries.

You guys (especially the two pinheads who gave a "thumbs down") have it ALL WRONG!!! THIS is what you do.... Find yourself a book of paper matches. Extract one of them from the pack. Take a pair of scissors and cut off the match head. Use a currently lit candle to light the match on the base of the match (not the match head end). Light your tobacco non-aggressively. Use several matches if you must. Tamp. Relight using the same method as before. This IS a bit cumbersome, but, it's THE ONLY WAY! Why? Because I said so!!!

+Stuff&Things : Bradley, if anyone takes seriously what I just wrote above, they can PM me and I'll deal with it. I've got to say, I had more good laughs out of your video AND the comments I've read so far, than I've gotten out of KZbin in weeks. I completely agree with what you stated in your video and your comments. I also think that it has a lot to do with the types of personalities that are attracted to, and indulge in, pipe smoking. Some of the Pipe Nazis just need to chill out!
