So nice sir. I saw other videos where recommend to put your weight on your front foot so the tail "skid" with the turn. However you put your weight on your back foot, even raising a little bit the wheels, with a move which is more similar to classic surfing
@YeWLayton
@YeWLayton 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, almost everything I do I relate it back to surfing. Putting your weight on your back foot, kicking the tail and sliding on the back wheels is going to allow you to slide easier and rotate more if you wanted. Putting your weight on the front foot doesn't make sense, as all you power is generated from the back leg to push and slide that tail.

Great tutorial. One question though, and its somethibg ive been wondering myself for a while. In the start of the vid you say to look over your shoulder when doing your fs snap and to keep your arms and shoulders square as you rotate them. However later on you're doing snaps where you look at the tail of your board or where you want it to hit rather than looking over your shoulder, and you throw your back arm up (as well as front arm). To me those are 2 different kinds of snaps, where the 2nd is more to burst the tail through the lip of the wave and the 1st one you explain is more like a vertical fs top turn kind of snap, if you know what i mean? Hope that makes some kind of sense haha
@YeWLayton
@YeWLayton 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers! The way I explain it is a general starting point to get the foundation and feel for the proper mechanics of doing a snap. Once you have this down pat you can start playing around with different variations, like I do. I like to throw a bit more tail and get a little 'whippy' when I do my snaps, so my mechanics may be a little different to what I explained at the start if the video. You Should definitely follow what I said at the start of the video, to get the fundamental understanding and proper mechanics of doing a snap, then once you're confident with it, you can do different variations, like throwing the tail more ect.. YEW!

hey, great tutorial. Quick question, I ride goofy but I pop my tail with my right foot, so could I still kinda snap by not lifting up the front of my board. Idk if that made sense XD
@YeWLayton
@YeWLayton 3 жыл бұрын
Can snap by not lifting the front of your board, you'll just have to push harder to slide on your front wheels. But it's a lot easier and more practical if you do pop up your front wheels first

Hi Yewlawton. I just picked up a Smoothstar Manta Ray. I am 183cm and 100kg. I typically have a wider stance in everything (baseball, basketball, etc…) I’m not sure if the stance is a little too wide? Should I trade in for a 34” Felipe 77 or 33” Holy Toledo?
@YeWLayton
@YeWLayton 2 жыл бұрын
G'day Zach! Epic, fun board that one. I think if you naturally have a wider stance. the manta will be fine. But also depends on what sorta style of skating you do. If you wanna cruise more on street and mellow ramps and bowls, the manta will be perfect. But if you do more my style of skating, like airs and critical maneuvers, you could opt for a Toledo if you wanted. Can still do critical maneuvers on the Manta, the Toledo is lighter so makes it a bit easier. But all in all I think the Manta will be fine. Hope this helps YEW!

Is snap pretty much like powerslide or kickturn on a regular skateboard 🛹? That’s how I feel when doing it. Not sure if I am missing something.
@YeWLayton
@YeWLayton 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah pretty much. Just incorporating the bottom turn on the surfskate to emulate the movement and feeling of doing it on a surfboard out in the ocean.

Do you lift the front of your board up when surfing too? It seems odd to me to do this.

@@YeWLayton You do a wheelie, then you kick the tail on the surfskate.
@YeWLayton
@YeWLayton 3 жыл бұрын
@@turbowtime9611 With surfing, you've got the rocker of your surfboard, the lifted nose combined with the steepness of the wave, which naturally allows you lift the front of your board and go into that turn. With skating, you don't have these elements, so need to pop your deck in order to complete the move. Same mechanics involved both in and out of the water though.

@@YeWLaytonI enjoy your videos. I use my Felipe Toledo 77 solely as a surf trainer to help me with surfing. Is it realistic to put the back foot all the way at the end of the surfskate? The surfskate is obviously much more responsive and fun to ride but does it stimulate the responsiveness of a high performance shortboard? I force myself not to put my back foot all the way at the end of my 77. I have seen a video/picture of Felipe doing the same in doing maneuvers that stimulate carving turns. Perhaps it depends on the surfboard techniques that you are practicing and where you are on a wave, i.e for surfing snaps you do need to put more weight on the back and hence the surfboard is as responsive as the surfskate with the foot all the way in the back. Or different surfboards behave differently and some surfskate feel more like a fish vs a thruster. What are your thoughts on back foot placement on the 77 to help with surfing on a high performance thruster?
@YeWLayton
@YeWLayton 3 жыл бұрын
@@cnghiem67 Thank you! means a lot! Good question. It depends what manoeuvres you're doing on your surfskate. I like to have it right at the back of my surfskate as this allows me to pop it up easily and do those critical turns. I would recommend having it at the back as I find it gives me more control over the board, if you don't like your foot right on the edge, I would have it about an inch from the edge. This way you're still going to have a lot control when doing critical turns and you don't have to worry about you back foot dangling over the edge. When doing carving turns you can probably have your back foot 2 inches from the edge, but I wouldn't go any further away than that. A surfskate isn't going to stimulate the responsiveness of a performance shortboard or any board for that matter, as the responsive of a surfboard comes from physically riding the board on a wave, and you feel what the wave is transmitting back to you through your surfboard. I use surfskates as a means to refine my surfing technique, so I can translate the same motions that I'm doing on my surfkate out in the surf and vise versa. Obviously some surfksate are going to be more responsive than others, depending on their size and everything, so if you're riding performance shortboard, use a surfskate like the toledo which is going to be more responsive and you're more likely going to be doing the same manoeuvres on your toledo as you would on you performance shortboard, as apposed to riding a longer surfskate and riding a performance shortboard. You'd ride a longer surfskate if you were a beginner or riding a longer surfboard. Hope that helps!

For the frontside snap where you’re almost doing a 270. Are you just rotating and kicking out harder? Thanks! Really appreciating the tutorials mate!
@YeWLayton
@YeWLayton 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah just kicking it out harder to get that extra rotation, once you're riding backwards it's important to stay low and compressed so you can spin back around and ride out of the turn
