1. You need to use a bevel tip as others mentioned 2. Put some flux on the battery the solder should 'flow' on to the battery and shouldn't look like, what you did, a blob of solder 3. The iron temperature should be around 400 degrees. 4. Use a liquid flux made for stainless steel applied with a q-tip and thinly applied to battery surface. 5. Load your tip with solder and use a quick circular motion on battery surface. It should only take 1 second to tin the battery and it should have a thin shiny layer of solder. 6. Let the battery cool between steps 7.To connect a nickle strip or wire they should be tinned like the battery top was. 8. Then use flux on both surfaces again. 9. Hold the nickle strip or wire above the battery surface after the solder melts bring the strip/wire and iron into contact with the tinned battery surface for 1 second hold the strip/wire with a popsicle stick or wooden chopstick till cool.

Use a bigger tip than that, like a chisel or bevel tip. No reason at all to make it harder on yourself. Youll cut the length of time you have the iron to the battery down to a fraction of that. Those tiny pointed tips are for delicate precision stuff.
