This is a video demonstration on how to solder resistors on a printed circuit board or PCB. For this demonstration a doubled sided printed circuit board with plate through holes is used. This type of PCB is very common in the consumer electronic market. The techniques shown can be applied to new pcb's for kits or for the repair of a pcb. The tutorial is well suited for the electronic / electrical technician, technologist, engineer, trades person, or home hobbyist that has no experience with electronic proto-typing. This video would be especially useful for the person assembling an electronic kit for the first time. Please watch the additional videos using the DMM, other test equipment, and on soldering techniques.

Ford! I am a 20 years Electronic Engineer, but still your explanation was perfect, detailed and pleasurable. Congratulations! It's funny how, even old professionals, still don't know this basic rules for soldering, and also for joining simple wires.

Its always good to learn something new and fun. I always tell my students in the first lecture of the semester that I will teach them something and they will also teach me something new. Thanks for the kind comments.

This video was great, because it showed you what to do when things go wrong, and various other details the other soldering tutorials don't cover.

PRO TIP (from a noob): Always use a bit of flux before trying to wick up solder. You can put the flux on the wick instead of the board to keep things a bit cleaner. Try it, the solder gets wicked up like magic!

@1929fordhotrod Thanks for this video. I recently watched a video where the hobbyist did all the resistor soldering on the component side (not flipped over on the lead side like you and most others do). I've never seen this technique before and it seemed to go much faster, especially since there were about 100 resistors. He dropped them all in and soldered all ~100 in one go. Then he flipped the board over, trimmed the leads and inspected the joints. Any tips or comments on this technique?

Good video Sir. I would rather recommend a brass tip cleaner instead of stainless steel. Bass is way less abrasive and more gently to the tip's surface.

i have a bad resistor on a circuit board on a home theather if i just replace it should it start working normal?
@1929fordhotrod
@1929fordhotrod 7 жыл бұрын
How do you know the resistor is bad. Is it black/burnt or did you measure the resistance of it. If you measured the resistance you may not get the correct resistance value of the resistor as there will be other components in parallel with in effecting the measurement.
@fredc8618
@fredc8618 7 жыл бұрын
***** i greatly appreciate your info..yes it is black burnt you think i can replace it with any similar resistor?
@1929fordhotrod
@1929fordhotrod 7 жыл бұрын
Yes you can replace the resistor with the same value but my concern is why it burnt up in the first place. There might be a problem somewhere in the circuit that caused the excessive draw in current for the resistor to over heat.
@fredc8618

***** you are perfectly correct i had my cell phone plugged in charging with the volume all the way up..it has to be the exact value? How would i find the value? Would it be written on the circuit board?

Don't you have to heat sink the resistors before soldering????
@1929fordhotrod

No. Many components do not require heat sinking while soldering. Component datasheets often provide information for soldering including temperatures and time.

Do you have any idea of the amount of solder you have wasted. Board can be cleaned after leads are cut short. Double waste noted here All in all a good tutorial for beginners

It's called a Panavise, not Helping Hands. Several of your solder joints lack penetration as seen from the top of the circuit board.
@1929fordhotrod
@1929fordhotrod 7 жыл бұрын
The manufacture of the "help hands" is Panavise. Remember the term "helping hands" is a generic term as there are many types of devices and manufactures for product of this type. As for the penetration only one resistor bottom right of the screen a timeline 15:00 could have use a bit more solder but not critical as this is a plate through board and there was a good solder joint on the solder side of the pcb. PCB's that do not have plate through hole will not have solder showing up on the component side of the pcb.
