Hi Tony. You can try polishing the settings but it is unlikely that you will be able to remove all the scale. However, steel wool does work well at removing any discoloration. The finished piece may need to be plated to hide the scale and the solder. To avoid this problem I use silver plated settings, low temperature 300 degree prefluxed acid core solder and a heat gun. Hi Diana. Yes. If you use a heat gun and low temperature 300 degree prefluxed acid core solder the gold plated settings should not discolor. However the solder will still show as silver. Here is an example for soldering with a heat gun: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6vEfZSHh9ariMk

How much does the earring weigh?

I gave those earrings away years ago. They are going to weigh more than similar size earrings because of the glass beads. The earrings could be made a lot lighter by using acrylic beads instead of glass beads.
