I went to a prestigious university and studied electronics - and we only did 4 hours PCB work in the whole 4 year course! Most of the students were terrible at it. The only reason I could do it was because I'd soldered as a hobby for years :) Great video! Here's to simplicity, repairs and Wabi Sabi!

Mr Solder, sir, you're skills are insane. I've never seen anyone solder individual pins on a quad pack like that. I'll give it a shot but I tend to shake a good deal so I may be doomed to a life of drag soldering. Thank you for your time and sharing such phenomenal skill and tactics.

Hi , thank you for your support . I'm glad you enjoyed the video , hopefully I can help a few people and maybe give them some different soldering options . I just find it easier to do pin by pin than drag soldering which I've never liked . Practice and we can all get better , that's what I tell myself anyway . My future videos will be much sharper clarity as I've just worked out how to edit my own videos instead of getting them done on an external device . I've just reposted 3 of my videos which I have updated to the sharper clarity . Thanks again and good luck with any soldering projects you do 🤞👍

Hi . Thank you for your comment , much appreciated. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The main thing I've learnt and tell people is to get a various selection of soldering tips and a decent iron , i.e Weller or Metcal. The trouble with cheap irons is you generally get one large ended tip that you can't do fine stuff with . With the right tools and practice you can definitely get to a better level that's why I do my video's to hopefully help people along the way . My next video will be showing helpful hints like using different widths of solder ( again very important ) , different tips and what you can do with them as well as lots of other hints and tips. I can totally relate. Been avoiding an SMD board for months, before gathering up the courage out of necessity. The 100 pin quad IC wasn't as bad as expected. Thought I was home free, until attempting the 0603's, which behaved like jumping beans. Haven't even attempted the 0402's. Made a mess of the project. So now I've started redesigning (1st ever) the commercial PCB with 1206 SMDs in KiCad by following their tutorials. That was already part of the plan. But, now, it's sooner instead of later, after the prototype with the commercial board. Mr SolderFix has amazingly steady hands and excellent soldering technique, which makes it look so easy and simple. I've learned to purchase at least twice as many components as I need, just to allow for failures. Just put in my order and found significant price breaks in quantities of 100, which also minimizes repeated shipping costs. Good luck on your project. 😎

I'm learning to do SMD components currently, and this has been quite helpful in learning how to make it easier. I am curious what you are using to clean the flux off--is it an IPA wipe or just a wipe with nothing on it?
@mrsolderfix3996 Жыл бұрын
Hi , thank you for your comment. I only ever use 2 different cleaning fluids . These are Ultrasolve and if I can't get this I use one called Flux off . They are available from the normal places , Farnell , RS Components, Rapid Online , Mouser , DIGIKEY etc. They can be funny about sending it out to private individuals due to its nature , flammable etc. Worth asking them . I normally buy 1 litre bottles of Ultrasolve , decant some into a small lid for instance then dip a Gtek dry wipe ( from Grove sales ) , based in the UK and wipe away as in my videos . I've posted a complete video on KZbin showing the methods I use to clean my boards from single components to complete boards . All info is in this video . Thanks again , take care 👍

This is of course very good, even though I'd add something. A quick mention on ESD protection soldering irons would be worth noting, as would preheating the PCB (even just a heat gun) so as to prevent blow out of the masking or copper. That, however is more likely to affect somebody in a particularly cold climate. Even though room temperature is assumed, life doesn't always work that way. Good video. Nice shiny feet on the soldering.

Very nice videos, indeed! I watched your entire soldering series and you make it look so damn easy, until one needs to pick up the iron and do it himself. I know the tools you use make the difference and I just wanted to konw what is your take on using the TS100 iron with the TS-B2 tip for general purpose SMD (1205, 0805 and, maybe but not necessary, 0604). The specs of the tip basically are conical, 10mm long and a radius of 0.5mm at the end. If anyone else would like to shareir the experience of using this iron for DIY projects, NOT full-time job on soldering, please put your words here. Also, I wanted to know if you are able to do all that SMD soldering (0605, 0402) with the naked eye or you use any sort of magnification. If yes, what kind of tools for magnification do you use? Thank you again for sharing your soldering techniques. They are really instructive and very high quality.
@mrsolderfix39962 жыл бұрын
Hi , thank you for your support , much appreciated. The tools I do use when I need magnification are ( model number 8087046 LA8093LEDRS/EUK ) , a simple aid that sits on your desk with a built in LED light ring . If I need a fully blown up view of a PCB I have a stereo long reach microscope , purchased from GT Vision ( England ) , their own branded one , a great scope which allows me to do microscopic work + the long arm means I can get very large boards under it. I haven't heard of the iron you mentioned so I can't really comment on that at all , but maybe other people if reading this can leave a comment about it . I do use a microscope when doing below 0603 size components , even though I have perfect close vision , using a microscope just gives you an amazing view of your board . Hope that helps , thank you again for your comment and good luck with all your soldering projects 👍

What temperature do you use for your soldering iron? I find it very difficult to keep my tip clean so long with lead free.
@mrsolderfix39963 жыл бұрын
Hi . All my soldering Is done roughly around 350 degrees centigrade , using a variety of different size tips . I know what you mean about the tip sometimes being difficult to keep clean . I sometimes scrape very carefully over the end of the tip with a fine scalpel then dip in tip cleaner which re-tins the end . Or I just re-tin the end with leaded solder then clean off and then coat In lead free so it's not contaminated . Between these methods I always get there in the end . OK, now for some REALLY important questions: 1. what brand flux are you using? Is there any you recommend staying away from? 2. What are you using to clean up? It doesn't look like a cloth or paper towel. Absolutely gorgeous solder joints m8.
@mrsolderfix39963 жыл бұрын
Hi , thank you for your questions . Firstly the flux I use is called SMFL200D . It's a great flux , the only one I ever use . It comes in a 200ml spray can , I just spray a small amount into a small container ( example milk bottle lid ) and apply using a dipped Ty wrap to the desired areas .I can't really comment on any others as I don't use others. Costs about £14 a can. Next the pcb cleaning fluid I use is called Ultrasolve . Best fluid I've ever used ( and I've tried a load over the years ) this is the recommended fluid for the flux I use . Both available from places like Farnell , RS Components ,Rapid Online and other electronic distributers . Lastly the cleaning wipes are called Gtek dry wipes . Available from a company called Grove Sales. Amazing flexible wipes , these are the best I've ever found in many years of soldering . Just dip into a small amount of the Ultrasolve and great results await you . The wipes cost about £5 for a pack of 100 . Hope that helps , thanks again 👍

These SMD videos have been excellent! I have a project I'm planning with some 0805 and LQFP 32/48, so these have been a huge help! Question: Are you using a magnifying lamp/microscope? Or is this with the naked eye? The camera view makes it seem like there is acres of room between the traces, but that's not true :) Thanks! Keep up the great work - I've subscribed!

To do most of my work I do use a microscope and your right in saying the traces may appear a distance from the next one but in reality they are amazingly close in a lot of cases . Could you do one on how to solder a 0201 too? I have a hard time soldering it with surrounding components without it bouncing everywhere. I can't seem to put it down correctly. All help is very much appreciated!
@sharymens8187Ай бұрын
Pre-tinning a 0201 also seems to be very hard.
@mrsolderfix3996Ай бұрын
@sharymens8187 hi , when doing 0402 I sometimes very lightly tack one end , then visit the other end and do a proper joint . If I need to I revisit the first end and finish off so both ends have equal amounts on . I try and get the curve as I do on all sizes . 0201 are easiest done by adding a small amount on to your tip and then apply the component in place then add your tip , this transfering the small amount of pre loaded solder . You get to judge how much you need on your tip , trust me . Do the same with the other end . Make sure you get some 0.25mm solder or you will struggle . Hope that helps. Thanks again 👍
@sharymens8187Ай бұрын
@@mrsolderfix3996 Thank you so much! I am looking for 0.25 mm solder (I can also try cutting a small piece off with a razor blade first). You suggested 0.25 mm BLT Circuits. Do you have a link for where you order this? I am based in the Netherlands and can't seem to find it.
@sharymens8187Ай бұрын
@@mrsolderfix3996 So for the 0201, best to not add solder on the pad before trying to place the component?
@mrsolderfix3996Ай бұрын
@sharymens8187 hi , the only problem is that BLT Circuits I believe only ship in the UK . The general suppliers like Farnell or RS Components will definitely ship to the Netherlands so it's worth checking these out to see if they do 0.25mm sizes . Hope you get on ok 👍

Just had a go at populating my 1st SMD PCB. Started with the 100 pin Quad IC, using the flat tip and drag method, with thin soldering wire. But had so many bridges that I ended up using ChipQuik to remove it and started over. Solder paste worked much better on the second go. So I got all cocky, thinking that the remaining resistors and caps would be a piece of cake. 0804's weren't too difficult, but the 0604's behaved like Mexican jumping beans. After regrouping to watch this video, I have learned many errors of my ways. The steadiness of your hands and soldering techniques are not to be underestimated. Thank you for sharing them on YT with us newbies. I'm ditching the flat blade for the fine cone tip. Q1: I'm sure that you have mentioned this in your other videos (which I'm about to binge watch), but what is the temperature of your iron? I had my @ my usual 300 degrees, but see that the melting point of solder paste is only ~250 deg. Q2: Have I most likely already fried the quad 100 pin IC by spending too much time attempting to remove bridges? I only see max temp specs for ICs while powered on. Thanks so much for demonstrating how the Master SolderFix does it. Cheers!
@mrsolderfix3996 Жыл бұрын
Hi , thank you for your comment. When I'm soldering using leaded solder I set my iron to roughly 330 degrees centigrade and for lead free roughly 350 - 370 degrees centigrade. I may vary these temps slightly for certain parts but overall these temps are the normal ones I use . Your ic's should be able to take temperatures that you've raised it to by your attempted rework so shouldn't worry about that , they are very hardy in most cases. Hope that helps , take care 👍

Hi . Thank you for your comment, much appreciated. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Some people do a drag soldering method to solder rows of IC pins but I'm personally not a fan of this method . There is videos on KZbin of this being done but it's not easy to achieve without getting solder shorts then having to clear them up . The way I do it works for me everytime and all I can suggest is get a good iron , maybe a Weller then as you can get various tips for these choose a fine conical tip .Also get some 0.25mm solder ( I get mine from BLT Circuits , based in England ) this is a great help for fine pitch soldering . Also use flux ( a must for soldering ) I've done a video on it's uses. Hopefully you get on ok and with patience and practice things do improve , this is what I've found over the years. Good luck with anything you try and thanks again 👍
