9:15 - I think it takes far too long to melt the solder on that chip. Apart for that, nice job showing aluminium foil works better than kaptop tape.

TIP: Shielding braid ( from scrap usb cables or solder wick ) has nice tinned small gauge wire strands for this.

I am about to attempt to repair my 1992 Commodore Amiga which has faulty IDE pins. 44 tiny (for my ham fists skills) solder joints. I will definitely try this method for getting the old header off. I have yet to figure out my technique for soldering the new one on there. Maybe solder paste and a heat gun is safer for me. I only get 1 shot, or I break my ancient computer even more

If you take a sewing needle ( I get the assortments of sizes ) and hold the pointed end under a lighter flame for a second or so, it will remove the 'temper' from the metal and you can make a 'J' hook ,using another sturdy tweezer, without the tip point cracking. These needles can be made small enough to get nicely between pins to hook and pull a single one outward when holding the soldering tip like you've shown. Putting the needle in an small pin-vise or xacto holder make it easier to hold. BR Lee Studley

Wow, this is an amazingly clever method! Many thanks, man, you're a wizard! I repair game consoles as a hobby. As a part of that, I repair many, many gamepads / game controllers. Most have so called '3D analogue sticks', which are notoriously defective and very hard to remove/replace, because the pins are (also) over a larger area. The assembly consists of a square case with 4 pins in de corners, two potentiometers (2x 3 pins) and a tactile button (4 pins). How would you advise to remove those?
@mrsolderfix39968 күн бұрын
Hi , I posted a video a while ago titled Neat method to remove PCB connectors. This is a method where I removed a similar connector pin wise to what you're describing . This video may be of use to you . Thanks for your comment , good luck 👍

@@mrsolderfix3996 Got any Surface Mount / SMD / BGA ( like desktop Graphics Card ASICs & reballing tipps videos? for newbie. I hav a full two temperature (upper and lower ) heat setting Rework station + a combo Soldering + Hot air solder station as well, reballing jigs/stensils etc . Chip grabber ( manual one like those cheapo solder suckers ( in process of learning) so i can do a GPU mod ( swapping an identical GPU ASIC /Chip + Vram (GDDR6) and maybe some (2x) GDDR6 Chips ( on an AMD (PowerColor Radeon RX 5600XT ITX 6GB (AMD Navi 10 GL /GXL -( cut down from top Navi 10 XT/XTX 256Bit (8x GDDR6) down to 6x GDDR6 Chips ( and surrounding supportied caps and other compentents like Resistors and chokes + VRMS ( to add extra phases the full GPU may need) for a small Velkase Velak 3 ITX PC build ( plus i dont care if i blow it up lol for learning but if i pull off ill be stoked lol!!! Iv seen many many BGA videos . but getting every tiny-Tiny bit of info and help i can before i attempt it.. i even have older stuff to play with also before i attempt my big job, i also want to learn BGA reballing / replacing of a bad ASIC and or GPU chip for self repair ( if possible) ive always wanted to do this and finally got hopefully 99% of teh equipment! most i need ociloscope/multimeter and maybe a few other specific stensils i dont have yet and i want a powered chip grapper tool.. (better than the manual one i have!)

I was trained in High Reliability Soldering to NASA standard in the early 1980s. I worked with component level fault finding and circuit board repair for 20 years after that. Had I learned his method in my younger technologist training it would have simplified my life and saved countless hours of work and frustration using flux kits, braid and solder suckers. Great videography and explanation of the process. I hope anyone teaching component removal uses this as a reference video. Great job!

What i learned so far is that i need to get very fine solder wire. That is my biggest trouble. Got some 0.5mm will also try to get 0.25mm and try them both. 0.8mm is too big.
