Flux is basically a mild etching solution. My local repairman uses diluted HCL as flux. It will also etch the top shinny layer of stainless steel. I haven't tried but you can try yourself.
@senegalus2 жыл бұрын
do you have some more infos about the HCL solution, how many % HCL and how much diluted?

That's really cool because it just so happens that I do have some HCL acid.
@wscamel226 Жыл бұрын
@@senegalus Also I'd just get the least diluted HCL solution as I can get and than start from a weak diluted with a lot of water one, up to very strong not diluted at all.

i used sulpamic acid as a test just now.. works fine. well i say sulphamic acid, it's actually toilet descaler that contains suplhamic acid. i dripped a tiny bit onto the stainless steel wind guard part of cigarette lighter. even the solder i used has some rosin in it. i held the iron to it and tyhe rosin basically boiled off. the flux i guess just cleaned things up as it does have other chemicals in it for cleaning lol basically anything that says "do not use on marble, metal kitchen sinks.. etc" will work as a flux.

Flux should by an acid that can dissolve chromium oxide. HCl and H2SO4 will work. Chromium(III) oxide (Cr2O3) can be reactively dissolved with sulfuric acid (~85 wt%; H2SO4/Cr2O3 ≥ 6 wt/wt) mixed with perchloric acid (HClO4/Cr2O3 ≈ ½ wt/wt) by ~175 ºC

Can this method be used to repair small cracks in steel vessels or stick a partly separated steel mug handle?
@apourmaker60554 жыл бұрын
Small cracks can be repaired, but if the cracks is too small, tin cannot penetrate into the gap and it will protrude on the surface.

I see your comment is a year ago but you can use both. Lead flows better but then people try to keep it away from food and water lines for obvious reasons.
