I am 61 years old and have been playing guitar off and on since my mid-twenties. I retired a couple of years ago and started playing a lot more. I've gotten better on my own. I guess a good analogy would be if I was traveling down a four-lane highway, I've moved from the slow senior citizen's lane on the far right and am firmly entrenched in the second lane with all the other traffic. I was happy. But then tonight, I stumbled upon this video, and within an hour, I think my guitar soloing skills have moved over to the third lane and are on the verge of busting into the high-occupancy fourth lane. I've been playing guitar for about 18 years with a 7 year break in the middle. I am self taught so it's a slow journey. The last 3 years I've been trying to utilize KZbin to learn. I have found many good channels for learning but this one is by far the most effective for me. I know not everyone can learn things the same way the next person does. I'm not sure what it is with POWs methods but I find i retain the information a whole lot better than I do with any other channel I've been watching. Man, thank you so much for your lessons. I grew up learning to play by ear wearing records out. No musical training. I bought books on scales and learned to jam in the pentatonic scales and from learning solos by ear and figuring out what notes fit with what chords, but I never learned the chemistry of it all that would take me where I wanted to go. You are opening that door for me. You have no idea what that means to me. I have been frustrated trying to express myself in my playing, but never had the road map to help me. So this to me is the best way to learn the music on KZbin. Too many artists spend time explaining what fret and string their fingers are on. If you just have these visual maps up... it makes it so much easier and you spend more time playing the licks.

Sadly....it has taken me many years to understand the idea of the pentatonic scale...today THIS VIDEO has connected all my little islands of acquired info throughout 22 years of playing self taught. Off and on that is. But 3 straight years of actually trying to learn what exactly I was doing. 3 years of many paid courses, which were great and mostly finished from start to finish. Great jib! Closest thing to what I taught myself in the 80s. I was given the 7 diatonic scales and 5 pentatonic scales. But each stand alone, not stacked. One day I noticed the overlappung patterns so I drew them colored like you did. Starting 1st fret low E, 3 of the same color per scale. Lets say Ionian diatonic first in orange. Then on the 3rd fret purple for 3 notes per string for Dorian, then blue 3 notes starting with the 5th frets. All in the same key. So only low E picture blue dots on 3, 5, 6 for Ionian So only low E picture purple dots on 5, 6, 8 for phrygian They stack, overlap, its a puzzle. Wuth the 7 diatonic scales you start at low E first fret and can go all the way to the 15th fret all using the same 7 notes and octaves. Always 3 if the same color used per pattern, 7 patterns. The pentatonic scale is hidden inside the diatonic scales but drop 2 of the 7 notes. Much like shown in this video. Colored dots teach this must much better, so thank you for showing this to people. These are not 7 or 5 stsnd alone scales, they are interconnected. Think of the 1st scale as this Do ra me fa so la ti do. (The scales start with a different sound) 2nd scale ra me fa so la ti do ra 3rd scale me fa so la ti do ra me Hope this makes sense

I can't believe how eye-opening these 20 minutes were. I had been struggling with improvisation for about a year, and then I came across this masterpiece. After just two days of applying that knowledge, I feel like I know almost the entire fretboard in any key. I guess the next step is to target the right notes when the chords change. I've just found this, and I honestly think I've had a breakthrough. I've studied the scale charts before, and used tools like Fretonator to see the full, say, E minor scale across the fretboard, but I was never able to just memorise where to go.
