Cool video, however I have a few questions. First if x equals both of those numbers, what is stopping you from plugging -4.5 in the first AND second x, or plugging in -1.5 first and -4.5 second if both are equal to x? And why can't I just pick two numbers that fit that criteria so that the equation is equal on both sides? For example can I say the first x is equal to 12 and the second x would then be equal to 3, plugging those in you would get 9=9. Why doesn't this work and why is your method the right answer? Anyways interesting video, thanks!

You're saying x = 12 and x = 3. You want to find the common x. An alternative to this method would be to square both terms, so you would get (x-3)^2 = (x+6)^2. Expanding this would give x^2 -6x + 9 = x^2 + 12x + 36. You can subtract x^2 from both sides, giving you -6x + 9 = 12x + 36 --> 12x+6x = 9-36 --> 18x = -27 --> x = -1.5.
