By translating the coordinate system so that the rope’s lowest point coincides with the origin, the poles, initially 50m tall with the rope 10m above the ground, become points at y=40. In this adjusted frame, the rope must descend from y=40 to y=0 and then ascend back to y=40, totaling a vertical traversal of 80 units. Since the rope length is exactly 80, this vertical journey alone consumes its entire length, leaving no room for any horizontal displacement. So the distance between the poles must be 0.

I have a math degree, and I never encountered the derivation of a catenary. Sad me. Seems like an extreme thing to bring up in a "job interview".
@Erik_The_Viking10 күн бұрын
Questions like these are more of the "stump the chump" variety to make the interviewer feel superior to the candidate. Nothing more.

The equation after changing coordinates satisfies y'' = Cy for some C>0. This physically makes sense, as the second derivative tells us how much the function is "curving"; a hanging string has more height when bent.

Nothing hurts more than when someone says "no brainer, right?” then proceeds to explain something I have no ability to grasp or follow along with whatsoever I love science & technology & physics & engineering but its so hard when i dont get even basic algebra, let alone when the calc & trig start getting thrown around. I just read "Universal" by Brian Cox & Jeff Forshaw, & it was very similar, lots of equations, symbols, terminology that seemed 10 years ahead of my understanding, but presented in a way that made it seem like it should be obvious. The book was good with a few other exceptions. Im just an idiot dropout though, good video 😎

I had similar issues due to awful teachers. Fortunately in this day and age you can revisit basics without being made fun of or having to use books directed at children, with many resources adding visual aspects that helped me understand concepts I had no chance of grasping otherwise. Perhaps your learning style needs a different approach than one you were provided. Learning basics can be fun and while full understanding requires some tedious repetition you can now do that in much more fun and interactive ways. There's great resources - from Khan Academy, Chad's Prep (organized chemistry and basic physics playlists), Michael van Biezen, Organic Chemistry Tutor (guy has videos on almost any science subject including calculus), 2Blue1Brown (beautiful introduction to calculus and linear algebra, amazing channel for visual learners), Three Twentysix (Fundamental chemistry concepts from start without being dumbed down) and Profesor Dave Explains, through Brilliant, to open source lectures (I recommend Walter Lewin's Physics 8.01, 8.02, 8.03 that contain lovely demonstrations).

I solved the same problem, assuming the cable is a parabola, pretty neat and doable with some calculus knowledge and works out pretty good. Only for the last expression I had to numerically approximate. My solution was roughly 56.3 m. Feel welcome to share if you got the same or a different solution!

To be fair, Presh Talwalkar emphasizes that only 10m part of the question was asked in an Amazon interview and he gives reference where he found it. So the no-brainer case. Maybe Amazon was checking if the candidate could realize that such a deep math question would not be asked and he should be just using his logic? For 20m case, he says he looked up the formula from a book which he also gives the details for. Your mocking about a fellow mathematician's name is pure ad hominem and childish. People (or probably 99.9% of them) do not have the liberty to choose their names.
