Your explanation is good .But clockwise and anticlockwise sign convention is wrong , i suggest that clock wise (-ve) ,anticlockwise is (+ve)

1)If stress is given with negative sign it is compressive.. 2) in figure arrow of stress act inward just like compressing the body..
