2x+y=14 (equation 1) x+y=14 (equation 2) y=14-x (equation 3) so i used equation 2 to create equation. substitute equation 3 into equation 1. 2x+(y)=14, note where ever i see y in equation 1 im going to put 14-x...... so... 2x+(14-x)=14, solve this linear equation for x. 2x+(14-x)=14...collect like terms 2x-x=14-14 x=0 when x=0, y=? y=14-0 y=14 solution (0,14).... to prove that the answers are correct you substitute both x and y values into both equations, once you get the values on the right hand side the solutions are correct.

Sorry about the late reply. x+y=83....(1) x-y=18....(2) Use equation (2) to create equation (3). x=18+y....(3) Substitute equation (3) into equation (1). (x)+y=83 (18+y)+y=83 18+y+y=83 18+2y=83 2y=83-18 2y=65 2y/2=65/2 y=32.5......... When y=32.5, x=? x=18+y x=18+32.5 x=50.5 Solution set (50.5, 32.5)

Sorry about the late reply. x+y=7....(1) y=2x-2....(2) y is the subject for equation (2), so we can substitute equation (2) into (1). x+(y)=7 x+(2x-2)=7 x+2x-2=7 3x=7+2 3x=9 3x/3=9/3 x=3. When x=3,y=?. y=2x-2 y=2(3)-2 y=6-2 y=4. Solution set (3,4)
