How to Solve the Skewb [Beginner Method] (v2)

This video has been getting very popular recently, so I'll just address a couple common issues here. Skewb is a very simply puzzle, and so nearly all stages of it rely on the one algorithm I showed you (R' L R L'), more commonly called the sledgehammer. Pay very close attention to the exact sides I turn in the video, and make sure you're doing it exactly the same. After doing a sledgehammer, the bottom layer should never be affected (or else you're doing it wrong!). Also pay attention to the axis you're turning the cube around (known as a y2 rotation in the most common case), as that could also mess you up.

Interesting to see how it is supposed to be done. I solved it myself and did it completely differently. My method was this: 1. Solve the permutation of the corners (pretty much the same way done here, except I dont put it on the white center since my next algorithms mess up the centers, and I don't orient the white side). 2. Solve the orientation of the corners 4 at a time (this is the algorithm that messes up the centers), and then 2 at a time when there are less than 4 left to orientate. 3. Solve the centers.

I can't give enough likes to this video, if it were possible I'd give it 💯❤💪👏 It is exhaustive, short and fun to watch. And I can see exactly where things go with my Skewb. I do have a wide variety of cubes, I don't like memorizing complicated algorithms. I like to understand what they do, how they rotate pieces and I'd rather use a few simple algorithms that I can follow several times. Here only the famous and simple Sledgehammer RLR'L' is used. If anyone asks me ever about Skewb solutions I'll point them to this video.

It seems a key final step (when three sides are unsolved) is to have the one solved side on the _bottom_. Otherwise I was just going back and forth between three unsolved and four unsolved.

Great tutorial, thanks. It took a little time to get used to the difference between the moves on skewb v 3x3. With 3x3, the front centre colour remains the same whereas with skewb it changes with each turn so keeping the orientation of the skewb took some practice.

After some trial and error, I finally know how to solve the Skewb EASILY with JUST the SledgeHammer algorithm..!! The Skewb is by far my easiest puzzle to solve because of its way of switching colors around…. NOW I can practice my turning speed on the cube and get faster for competitions…. It’s pretty exciting to be honest..!! Hopefully I’m in a competition by next year..!! I’d love to see people performing their best..!!
