This is episode 4 of nail that tone. In this episode I discuss some of the import factors when trying to replicate the iconic 1987 white snake guitar sound. I share some insights on how to get a similar tone using similar gear to what was used originally.

What's interesting is that, if you listen to Ozzy's album "Diary of a Madman", Randy Rhoad's tone on, say, "Flying High Again" (Studio Version) has a sound very similar to John's tone on this entire 87' album. It's a very "metallic" sound, with a ton of high end and presence, with almost no bass or mids. It's a killer classic metal tone for sure!

Well, Sykes was probably influenced by that sound. Any album that did well and sounded great, players were smart and would often borrow from each other.

Sykes & Rhoads are contemporaries. When Rhoads was still alive & with Ozzy, Sykes was with "Tygers of Pantang", checkout his tone on the "Spellbound" album, he already had that sound. I particularly love his tone & playing on "Mirror Mirror" in that album. Having said that, I've often thought both Rhoads & Sykes had certain similarities in their playing. Ozzy did want Sykes as a replacement for Rhoads, but Sykes elected to stay with Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy).

John has a killer grab when his plays. You gotta play heavy to play Sykes. In general, you gotta play heavy when playing hard rock and metal. John's rig was a 70's Les Paul, with the Dirty Fingers pickups, and you're right on, he used the Mesa Boogie MKIII Coliseum amp, although many people think it was a Marshall head, it wasn't, it's the Coliseum. But, the cabinets where Marshall, of course; but the main ingredients there are the Coliseum head and a good american Les Paul with high output pickups.

Keith Olsen and Mike Stone produced '87. Bob Rock produced Blue Murder, and was busy with Honeymoon Suite, Bon Jovi, Rock and Hyde, Loverboy and Aerosmith (as an engineer) around that time. So I'm not sure how Bob Rock helped with Sykes' tone, unless it's not credited on the album. It's also nice to hear the Chris Collier 2020 mixes of the Sykes-era material. They took out much of the reverb, and you can hear more of Sykes' picking, especially on Crying In the Rain. Thanks for this video!

Nice Bro. So, on my Mark V and 2X12 recto. As you said, the "tone" is really mic placement on or around the cone for sure. Would you recommend doing this on Ch2 or Ch3 on the Mark V? IIC+ on there does cut the "drive" more than the Mark IV mode does. Any recommendations for the EQ (post)? I will adjust my EQ sliders to match yours as near as I can on the V. Just looking for any suggestions you may offer.
@ShredHeads
@ShredHeads 3 жыл бұрын
I have never played a Mark V. I might get one someday for sure. I am assuming it has that classic mark sound so I would say to probably use channel 3. I would run the gain at around 5 or so. The lead channel on my different mark amps have a lot of gain even at 4 or 5. In post I just recorded 2 tracks that were set flat with just the raw tone and two that I added some bottom end to thicken the sound. I did four tracks in total with each side having a flat and thick track panned hard to each side.

I have the smaller Mark V, the 25 watt. Mark IV mode seems best. Make sure you dial back the bass (on the rotary control), which is a must for all high gain work on a Mark series. For the gain, less that 12 o'clock and the EQ less of a V more have the sliders above half way apart from the middle (750hz) which is pulled down. Go mid way between the mid point and the top of the EQ for most and then dial to taste. To much gain muddies the mix. The Presence is key here as you need at "sizzle". There's a lot of top end on his tone In general I get the feeling that the Mark V in Mark IV mode is closer to an angry Mark IIC++ or a Mark III (which Skyes used - a Mark III Coliseum). I never got on well with the big Mark V - I always thought it was lacking a little something but didn't know what that something was but I love the 25 watt but wished I had a crystal ball and saw that the 35 watt was coming out shortly after I bought the 25. That has a bigger transformer and more punch. You can get this tone on that amp in a few minutes. For pickups you'll need something fairly hot but clear. Skyes used Dirty Fingers. I'm digging the EMG Het Set at 18V, which gives the clarity but a ton of drive. Strings. Don't use a set of telegraph wires and expect tons of zing in the tone. Go old school and back to 9-42 or 44 otherwise you'll be fighting a losing battle even before the tone has reached the pickups.

Tuning can vary based on how you play. If you just play power chords, most guitars will stay in tune pretty well. If you hit the strings hard and bend the hell out of the strings a lot of guitars won't stay in tune very well. While your experience may vary, many players have experienced issues with the gibson/les paul guitars which is why it's a thing among the guitar player community.

@@ShredHeads Playing a guitar that’s been hanging on the wall at GC (likely with old lifeless strings) is no way to judge a guitar (any guitar). A person needs to take it home, put their favorite strings on it, and set it up like they like. Then, and only then, is when they will get to know the guitar. Is any guitar with a traditional nut and a regular tune-o-matic tailpiece gonna be as solid tuning-wise as one with as one with a locking nut and FR? Of course not. Hey Shred head! first a Big THANK YOU from Niagara Falls Canada - I have burning questions ALL about your Les paul, I just got into the LP style guitar world and I REALLY *need your help* My *Les paul won't stay in tune* and I don't want to put thicker strings , my guitar has a decent spec to it and i like my guitars to play smooth/ easy with 9-46 i don't usually go up string gages from that. (Please read bellow🙏🏻)! * *How do you keep the damn thing in tune so well?* I have an unsung Canadian les paul I.e the godin LG same gibson short scale and it really is not holding tune despite a graptech tusq nut that it came with and schaller tulip style kluson tuners. Almost every time when I whack a big G chord or play a fast lick followed by a big bend it falls out. : - Right now I have 9-46 strings on it right now. so im wondering : - What can I do next ? - Do I have to swap out these pesky tulip tuners ? Yours seem to do the job, how ? - I like big behind the nut ( fake whammy bar !) bends famously done by John Sykes and mastered by Phil X too so tuning is really important.. - using like 12 gauge strings is not an option i play on my esp vintage plus HSS superstrat with 9-46 so jumping up so many string gaiges probably will feel crazy stiff and just uncomfortable to play. - do I need to just jump ship altogether and get 3 on 3 modern staggered locking tuners by schaller hipshot etc quality locking tuners and ditch the vintage ones if nothing else works ? *** I am new to the les paul game, have played superstrats since I started but the godin single cut LG caught my eye for price specs and looking unique in a cool way ( I think prs's are tacky looking and gibsons are too classic everyone has one and I wanted to try a different kind of single cut). * I really look forward to hearing some advice from you about the above ^ the Godin LG feels phenomenal of the damn thing would just stay in tune it would be my next main player. Until I figure out these tuning woes I've just been playing my strat. * Just looking for some clarity and I thought there was no one better to ask who is a bit more familiar in dialing in these beasts. Your big heavy and underrated riffs you play on it and candid videos of you sharing your secrets, playing style and lessons in general are a real treat - the les paul specifically yours looks like it plays in your wheel house 100% so I hope you can tell me all the ins and out about keeping it in tune. . Thanks in advance for any help and advice; stay safe keep rocking and giving us this amazing content my friend. All the best 🤘🏻🙏🏻 - Adam

Hello Canadian friend. 🤘 It sucks to hear you are having issues with your LP guitar. The truth about these guitars is that they all or most of them don't stay in tune very well. It's a common issue. My two LP's don't stay in tune very well which is super annoying so I understand your frustration. The design of the Les Paul is flawed because of the string angle at the nut for both the D and G string. These strings tend to catch on the nut causing them to go out of tune. My best advice would be to find a guitar tech/luthier who you can take the guitar to. Tell him about the issues you are having and a good tech should be able to improve the guitar's performance. There are several mods the tech can make to the guitar in order to improve tuning stability. I would not go up in string gauge, I don't think this will help at all. I use 9's on most of my guitars. the truth is that no guitar is perfect, every guitar goes out of tune with enough stress and playing time. I wouldn't worry about it. Just spend some time and find something that works for that guitar so that it is usable. And of course enjoy it because a guitar is useless if it isn't played. Take care, -Juan

Search YT for "Gibson mandolin guitar string tuning method". It works like this. First, make certain that the string slots are cut correctly for your string gauge in the correct width and not too deep. Nut sauce the slots lightly. Make certain that the tuning gears are snug & not loose. For the E/A/D strings allready running through the tailpiece, over the saddles, across the fingerboard and over the nut, make a 90 degree bend at the next tuning post above the post that you intend to wind up. For the E string bend at the A string post and so on. (Gauge by your eye for the D string bend at or slightly above the top of the headstock) Slide the string through the post hole from the inner/inside middle area of the headstock side up to the bend. With the protruding end make another reverse bend around the post to where the first bend is and bring the string "underneath" the 1st bend and bend the string straight up. Wind the tuning peg carefully while winding the wraps down underneath one another towards the headstock You now have 3 bends forever locking the string and 2-3 wraps for the E/A/D strings posts. Once properly stretched you will never lose tuning providing that the nut slot is properly set up and that there is no tuning gear sloppiness. For the G/B/E strings make the first bend 2 tuning posts above the post intended to be strung and repeat the process. As you wrap the strings down the posts you will have 3-4 wraps around each post for the G/B/E string posts. 3 bends and 2-5 wraps per post. Ain't NOTHING going to be slipping up there EVER!😃🤟 You will never ever have a tuning problem ever again on a Gibson with this stringing technique. The only part that is difficult is string removal at the post but it's well worth the small hassle to stay in tune and make 4 fret bends with no worries. And make certain that the saddles are deburred and smooth. Let me know how happy that you are.😉

But what did he use live with WS & TL? Speakers also.

Not sure. He wasn’t in white snake very long. Speakers were probably what was popular at the time, greenback, 65/75 celestions or the earliest V30 speakers.

@@ShredHeads Yea, hard top say which speakers. I enjoy the early break-up of 25w GB speakers. Great harmonics. To me, higher watt speakers seem to choke the tone and make it sterile.

Sorry about all the messages but this s*** just popped out of my brain a little bit at a time but he is dirty fingers too in the bridge and of the bridge of Les Paul. To be honest with you those dirty fingers are great for metal Rock a little bit of rockabilly very versatile and the only other pickup I probably want to have is super distortion from like 20 or 30 years ago when they were made by a lady at the the demarzio factory

Thanks for the video. Please tone down the 'background' music at least 50-80% lower. It distracts, is on top of your voice and is not good music. Thanks.

I’ll keep your feedback in mind. However, you are the first to complain about the music. My voice could be louder but adding some compression would fix that. 👍

"Gibson Les Pauls don't stay in tune" 👊👊 Buy Custom Shop you bastard! I'm mainly a Strat player, but there is nothing wrong with my 57 and 60 reissues. They stay in tune a little better than stock Strats I own. Gibsons (custom shop) only have ONE flaw..they're very fragile. Both of my reissues have dents and chips that would take years to appear on a Strat. Cool video man, how did you tame the volume?

boogies are mostly pre amp gain amps. No need to crank them to get a good sound from them. The Gibsons I have owned stay in tune ok, but not great. if yours stay in tune then that's great i would keep them around.

I mean this with full good intentions in constructive criticism. The sounds are fine. But you need to work on your pocket and your feel. Play with a metronome rhythm wise.

I am not sure what string gauge he used but I don’t think it would matter that much. 010 on a les Paul works great.
